Book excerpt: William Revelli stated that perhaps one of the greatest weaknesses of our school band programs is that, for the majority of the students, active participation ceases upon the day of graduation from our high schools. Music educators should strive to motivate all students, regardless of degree path, toward lifelong music making. After high school, many students do not pursue music as a major yet decide to participate in a collegiate ensemble. It seems relevant to investigate the influences behind these choices. The purpose of this study was to determine what factors contributed to a non-music major's decision to participate in their collegiate band(s). An email soliciting student participation was sent to college band directors through the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA). The 17-question electronic survey included an open-ended response, a 7-point Likert-type scale investigating factors that influenced their decision to participate in a collegiate ensemble, and demographic information. Participants (N = 2,933) were students enrolled at 95 colleges and universities from 37 states. The majority (56%) were enrolled in more than one type of band. Results from the open-ended response revealed that an overall love/enjoyment for music was the primary reason for continued music participation. Likert-type scale analysis showed a compilation of factors ultimately led to student participation. The factors with the highest mean scores, representing the strongest influences, were love/enjoyment for music, the overall high school band experience, self-pride of being a member of the college band, social aspects involved with the college band, and quality and reputation of the college band. Students enrolled in athletic bands (marching and pep bands) displayed higher motivation to continue playing from social influences whereas students enrolled in concert ensembles (concert and jazz bands) appeared to be more influenced by musical aspects. Findings from this study suggest that participants' intrinsically motivated desire to continue playing is largely due to the enjoyment started in beginning band, and continued throughout high school. Further research may investigate specific aspects related to the high school experience that promote continued music performance as well as techniques directors of all levels can utilize to encourage lifelong music making.
Book Synopsis Meanings of Music Participation by : C. Victor Fung
Download or read book Meanings of Music Participation written by C. Victor Fung and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uncovers the multifaceted nature of music participation through a collection of studies in a wide variety of musical contexts across the United States. The contributors combine personal voices and vivid narratives with scholarship to present many potential meanings of music participation, and lay out research-based implications for lifelong music education. Exploring music participation in choral and instrumental ensembles; school music classes and community groups; in-person and virtual spaces; among children, young adults, and older adults; and for native-born citizens and immigrants, the 10 original studies in this volume present a diverse portrait of musical engagement. The chapters draw out themes including enjoyment, identity development, learner autonomy, social interaction, motivation, commitment, and quality of life, and draw connections between musical meanings and philosophical principles from both Western and Eastern traditions. Linked by interludes that connect the empirical studies with philosophical interpretations, this volume brings together multiple methodologies and perspectives to consider the social, cultural, and psychological meanings of lifelong music participation. It offers a valuable resource for scholars, professionals, and students working in school and community music or music education research, as well as readers interested in general education, social psychology, lifelong learning, and aging studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to better understand motivational factors related to continued choral participation during the transition from high school to college. Study participants (N = 369) must have met three criteria for involvement: (a) be a current college or university student, (b) be at least 18 years of age, and (c) have sung in their high school choir for at least one year. An online survey was developed from the Undergraduate Non-Participation in a College Band Program: Pac-10 Questionnaire (McDavid, 1999), Student Music Questionnaire (Clements, 2002), and Wave 5 Childhood Questionnaire (Eccles, 1989) and was administered to students at colleges and universities around the country by their respective choral directors (n = 369). Additionally, these students were urged to forward the survey to one friend who was in high school choir, but did not participate in choir in college (n = 101). Eccles' Expectancy-Value theory was used at as a theoretical framework for the study, which prompted the identification of six motivation factor groupings: attainment value, background, competency, cost, intrinsic value, and utility value. The survey responses of both college choral participants and non-participants were compared by using the six motivation groupings to better understand which motivation factor groupings showed significant differences between the two populations. Four motivation factor groupings showed significant differences between participants and nonparticipants: intrinsic value, cost, competency, and background. The findings suggest that college choral directors must utilize a multi-dimensional recruitment strategy in order to most accurately focus recruiting efforts on students who are interested in participating in college choir but are unsure of how it fits in to their busy academic schedule. These results may lead to an improved attempt at providing incoming students with an accurate and thorough description of how to effectively include choral participation in non-major course schedules.
Book Synopsis Safety, Identity, Transmission and Enculturation by : Jo-Anne van der Vat-Chromy
Download or read book Safety, Identity, Transmission and Enculturation written by Jo-Anne van der Vat-Chromy and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived impact of four elements of choral cultures in lives of undergraduate music majors within the contexts of auditioned and non-auditioned choir settings. Specifically, this study sought to determine: 1.) Do the elements of safety, identify, transmission, and enculturation demonstrate a formative influence in shaping the attitudes about choral cultures in undergraduate collegiate choirs? 2.) Is there a difference between how these experiences are perceived in terms of music majors in an auditioned vs. non-auditioned setting? 3.) Did choir members perceive their ensemble participation would impact their future music teaching careers, and if so, in what manner? A survey instrument, adapted from the literature (Hylton, 1980; Adderley et. al, 2003; and Morrison, 2001), was organized into three sections: demographics, twenty-five Likert-type scale questions and seven open-ended questions. The survey was piloted by undergraduate music majors at a large, southeastern American university (N = 23, n = 11, non-auditioned choir; n = 12, auditioned choir). Participants in the study (N = 154; n = 68, non-auditioned choirs, n = 86, auditioned choirs) were undergraduate music majors from seven choral ensembles at three American universities. Factor analysis of the survey instrument revealed factor loading above .600 for fifteen of the twenty-five questions, which shaped survey revisions.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons students currently participating in collegiate instrumental ensembles chose to initially join instrumental music ensembles, what they enjoyed about the experience, and why they persisted. An ex post facto design was employed to determine the effects of recruitment and retention practices within middle school, high school, and collegiate instrumental ensembles. I surveyed students currently participating in college band ensembles who had participated in middle and high school band as part of their past school musical training. A survey was developed and distributed to four instrumental music ensembles: Buckeye Philharmonic, Symphonic Band, University Band, and Marching Band. The survey focused on the reasons for initial participation, participation in middle school, high school, and college, as well as why these participants considered dropping out of their respective ensembles. Data suggests that participation or non-participation in musical ensembles were influenced by factors such as (a) music major/non-music major participation, (b) current ensemble, (c) family support, (d) social reasons and (e) competence beliefs. Findings imply that competence beliefs are fragile in the early stages, but participants, particularly music majors, may center parts of their identity around music. Music majors valued musical and social factors more than non-music majors. In addition, there were significant differences in reasons for participation based on ensemble, particularly the Buckeye Philharmonic and Marching Band.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Choral Pedagogy by : Frank Abrahams
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Choral Pedagogy written by Frank Abrahams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the landscape of choral education changes - disrupted by Glee, YouTube, and increasingly cheap audio production software - teachers of choral conducting need current research in the field that charts scholarly paths through contemporary debates and sets an agenda for new critical thought and practice. Where, in the digitizing world, is the field of choral pedagogy moving? Editor Frank Abrahams and Paul D. Head, both experienced choral conductors and teachers, offer here a comprehensive handbook of newly-commissioned chapters that provide key scholarly-critical perspectives on teaching and learning in the field of choral music, written by academic scholars and researchers in tandem with active choral conductors. As chapters in this book demonstrate, choral pedagogy encompasses everything from conductors' gestures to the administrative management of the choir. The contributors to The Oxford Handbook of Choral Pedagogy address the full range of issues in contemporary choral pedagogy, from repertoire to voice science to the social and political aspects of choral singing. They also cover the construction of a choral singer's personal identity, the gendering of choral ensembles, social justice in choral education, and the role of the choral art in society more generally. Included scholarship focuses on both the United States and international perspectives in five sections that address traditional paradigms of the field and challenges to them; critical case studies on teaching and conducting specific populations (such as international, school, or barbershop choirs); the pedagogical functions of repertoire; teaching as a way to construct identity; and new scholarly methodologies in pedagogy and the voice.
