The problems are the greatest in the Pacific Northwest and the upper and lower Mississippi River Valley. Debris hazards are local and infrequent phenomena often associated with large floods. Most bridge destruction is due to accumulation against bridge components. Debris may partially or totally block waterways and create adverse hydraulic conditions that erode pier foundations and bridge abutments and do other structural damage. Many debris problems exist in forested areas with active logging operations. Bridges on streams where stream slopes are mild or moderate, in contrast to headwater streams, are more vulnerable to debris related hazards. Debris hazards occur more frequently in unstable streams where bank erosion is active.

The accumulation of debris at inlets of highway culverts and bridge structures is a frequent cause of unsatisfactory performance and malfunction. This accumulation may result in erosion at culvert entrances, overtopping and failure of roadway embankments and damage to adjacent properties, increased local scour at piers and/or abutments, and the formation of pressure flow scour. Consideration of debris accumulations and the need for debris-control structures should be an essential part of the design of all drainage structures. Structural and non-structural measures have been used effectively to prevent or reduce the size of debris accumulations at bridges and culverts. Structural measures can include features that: (a) intercept debris at or upstream of a structure inlet; (b) deflect debris near the inlet; or (c) orient the debris to facilitate passage of the debris through the structure. Non-structural measures include management of the upstream watershed and maintenance. This publication provides measures for both culvert and bridge structures. The measures available for culverts are based on the information included in earlier editions of this manual. Selection of a certain debris countermeasure depends upon the size, quantity, and type of debris, the potential hazard to life and property, the costs involved, and the maintenance proposed.

The stand alone software is freely available at HR Wallingford’s website www.river-conveyance.net. The conveyance engine has also been embedded within industry standard river modelling software such as InfoWorks RS and Flood Modeller Pro. This 2nd Edition has been greatly expanded through the addition of Chapters 6-8, which now supply the background to the Shiono and Knight Method (SKM), upon which the CES-AES is largely based. With the need to estimate river levels more accurately, computational methods are now frequently embedded in flood risk management procedures, as for example in ISO 18320 (‘Determination of the stage-discharge relationship’), in which both the SKM and CES feature. The CES-AES incorporates five main components: A Roughness Adviser, A Conveyance Generator, an Uncertainty Estimator, a Backwater Module and an Afflux Estimator. The SKM provides an alternative approach, solving the governing equation analytically or numerically using Excel, or with the short FORTRAN program provided. Special attention is paid to calculating the distributions of boundary shear stress distributions in channels of different shape, and to appropriate formulations for resistance and drag forces, including those on trees in floodplains. Worked examples are given for flows in a wide range of channel types (size, shape, cover, sinuosity), ranging from small scale laboratory flumes (Q = 2.0 1s-1) to European rivers (~2,000 m3s-1), and large-scale world rivers (> 23,000 m3s-1), a ~ 107 range in discharge. Sites from rivers in the UK, France, China, New Zealand and Ecuador are considered. Topics are introduced initially at a simplified level, and get progressively more complex in later chapters. This book is intended for post graduate level students and practising engineers or hydrologists engaged in flood risk management, as well as those who may simply just wish to learn more about modelling flows in rivers.

River Flow 2016 was organized under the auspices of the Committee for Fluvial Hydraulics of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). Since its first edition in 2002, the River Flow conference series has become the main international event focusing on river hydrodynamics, sediment transport, river engineering and restoration. Some of the highlights of the 8th International Conference on Fluvial Hydraulics were to focus on inter-disciplinary research involving, among others, ecological and biological aspects relevant to river flows and processes and to emphasize broader themes dealing with river sustainability. River Flow 2016 contains the contributions presented during the regular sessions covering the main conference themes and the special sessions focusing on specific hot topics of river flow research, and will be of interest to academics interested in hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering.
