Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine the factors that impact Catholic school teacher turnover with special attention to alternative route to teacher certification. Teacher turnover has a negative impact on the school organization economically, and a negative effect on student success. Factors tested in this study as having an impact on teacher turnover, in addition to route to certification or licensure, include teacher characteristics, school characteristics, and working conditions. The study also compared the percentage of teacher turnover in the Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools to national teacher turnover statics, and factors that impact teacher turnover locally with national trends. Teachers new to the Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools between 2001 and 2006 were the focus for this study. Data were obtained from 284 current and former Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools teachers through a 55-item survey developed by the researcher. The survey was modeled on the National Center for Educational Statistics Teacher Follow-up Survey which also provided the national numbers for comparison in this study. Regression analyses and Chi-square tests were used to determine which of the factors might be predictive of teacher retention or attrition. The findings of this study show that for the six-year period studied, alternatively certified beginning teachers had the same as or a higher percentage of retention than traditionally certified beginning teachers. Findings also show that family circumstances, size of the school, and the diversity of student ethnicity are the factors that are most predictive of teacher attrition or retention. The age of the teacher and the lack of evidence of student service in support of Catholic social justice teachings were the next most significant factors predicting teacher turnover. The study shows that teachers are more likely to continue teaching in Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools when the evidence of the Catholic identity indicators matches the importance placed on that indicator by the teacher. The results of this dissertation study extend the research on teacher retention and have implications for school principals who hire teachers in Catholic schools, for archdiocesan superintendents, and institutions of higher education that train teachers.

Schools are facing low teacher retention rates which negatively impact student performance. Podolsky et al. (2019) ascertained student needs continue to rise in complexity and policymakers are forced to staff schools with highly qualified teachers who are responsive to student needs and the economy’s rapidly growing demand. McIntosh et al. (2018) debated alternatively certified teachers are less prepared to teach in the classroom than traditionally certified teachers. Classroom management, administrative support, resources, content knowledge, job conditions, and work conditions are factors contributing to and/or hindering teacher retention. This qualitative study used the Job Demand-Resources theoretical framework and the conceptual frameworks of the Teacher Career Cycle, the Developmental Stages of Teachers, and the Professional Career Cycle in conjunction with Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis to gauge novice teacher perceptions and personal experience of factors contributing to retention in teachers certified through an alternative program. Maximal variation sampling was used to select and interview 10 participants with one-to-four years of experience. Interviews were recorded for accuracy using Apple’s Voice Memos or Zoom while NVivo was used to transcribe participant interviews. The study revealed several themes that impact alternatively certified teachers’ retention: positive affect, job demands, and job resources. Alternatively certified teachers reported sub-themes such as classroom management, relationships, classroom observations, background connections, patience, peer support and mentorship, and learning communities as factors contributing to teacher retention. This study was consistent with Alsaleh (2022) whose study determined new teachers need additional support in the classroom at the campus level. This study was also consistent with findings from Miller et al. (2020) who concluded school mentoring, professional development, working conditions, and administrative support were linked to teacher retention.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of an alternative certification program on the retention of teachers in Region 20, Texas, as reported by Education Service Center, Region 20, Texas. Demographic variables were used to determine association with retention rates. Additionally, the study provided qualitative data and information that assisted in explaining the retention rates of Teacher Orientation and Preparation Program (TOPP) participants. A mixed methods research, utilizing logistic regression and a survey interview instrument, was used to determine retention rates as well as variables that influence retention rates of TOPP participants. A total of 537 TOPP participants were analyzed. Additionally, a sub-sample of 10 participants was interviewed. The study provides an analysis of the following demographic variables: ethnicity, gender, current grade type (elementary - PK-5, middle school - 6-8, and highschool - 9-12), and current socioeconomic level (as determined by the percent of children who qualify for free and reduced lunch programs). Of the four demographic variables analyzed, none was found to have an association with retention rates. A number of other variables were found to have an impact on the retention of the teachers interviewed in the sub-sample. Those variables included personal commitment to the field of education or the kids, a mentor, team support, administrative support, and new teacher induction programs. The implications from the findings of this research study are numerous and can have an effect in areas such as teacher hiring practices, teacher retention practices, and teacher preparation programs. It is important to note that the researcher recommends that expert opinions be sought and further research be conducted on teacher retention and teacher preparation programs before any recommendations for change are made.

Factors of teacher turnover in private and public schools were researched through the literature review and factors were identified. The goal of this descriptive study is to provide information on teacher turnover for administrators in a state association of Christian schools. A research table was developed through the literature review, which led to the pilot survey where a team of experts, the coordinator of the state association of Christian schools, one high school principal, two elementary principals, and three headmasters, made recommendations. This pilot study was conducted in two Christian schools not affiliated with the association studied. Following the pilot study, the final survey was published in the state association of Christian school's booklet prepared for the convention. This dissertation is unique in that all who attended the state association of Christian school's convention received a survey as they walked into the main auditorium. The coordinator of the association encouraged the participants to complete the survey at the convention by announcing the survey at the main session. The surveys were collected as the participants exited the main auditorium. The surveys were tallied and statistical analysis was conducted through descriptive statistics and reported to participating administrators. The results from the survey identified the school control factors in teacher turnover in the association of Christian schools as finances/low pay, lack of administrative support and lack of quality administration. Stress/burnout contributes to both school control factors and outside school control factors. The outside school control factors that contribute to teacher turnover in the association of Christian schools include spouse relocation and God's calling.

Book excerpt: Although Catholic schools are the largest sector of the national private and faith-based educational market, the overall student enrollment in Catholic K-12 schools has steadily declined. In order for Catholic schools to remain sustainable and competitive among the many different educational options in the twenty-first century, they must set themselves apart from other schools by offering unique learning opportunities that support twenty-first century education while promoting Catholic educational values. Recognizing the need for updated teaching practices, balanced pedagogy with Catholic educational values, and focused research on Catholic education, this two-year multiple-case study explored the instructional practices of eight middle level Catholic teachers during an initiative focused on shifting instructional strategies to support twenty-first century education supported by educational technology integration. Teaching practices were documented through participant observations, interviews, survey, and historical and field evidence. Data illuminated much variability in teachers' interpretations of twenty-first century education, classroom practice, and levels of technology integration. All teachers encouraged creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration in their instruction, however these specific domains of learning were primarily supported through an emphasis on lower order cognitive skills and processes. Although evidence suggested consistent technology integration in classrooms, technology was primarily used to substitute or augment instruction as opposed to the transformation of teaching and learning to support twenty-first century education. Data also revealed a balance between Catholic educational values and new teaching pedagogies except in Religion classes or instruction. This finding suggested content subject culture was a confounding aspect to instructional practices. This study highlights suggestions for teacher practice that include rethinking the purpose and structure of assessment, balancing personal opinions of technology with twenty-first century instruction, and shifting teacher-student classroom roles to foster teaching and learning environments that support creativity. Furthermore, additional implications for teachers and policy makers center on collaboration as a model for student learning, and to promote a shared vision for Catholic education in the twenty-first century. The implications for future research focus on expanding the study to include school level influencing factors and participants, centering on Religion class as the context, and the inclusion of students' perspectives.

Sisters, priests, and brothers accounted for the majority of teachers in Catholic schools prior to 1960. The declining population of the teaching clergy led to an increase in the number of lay teachers. Lay teachers now occupy over 90% of the teaching positions at most Catholic schools. There is a significant reliance upon a lay teaching force in contemporary Catholic schools. The need to select and retain qualified lay educators is a concern confronting Catholic school administrators. The Diocese of Charlotte is located in the western portion of North Carolina. There are 17 schools in the diocese serving students from grades K-12. A teacher population that is predominately lay serves the schools of the diocese. All teachers in the Diocese of Charlotte were invited to participate in a survey on conditions that promote teacher retention. Respondents included 366 teachers who completed a questionnaire containing Likert-scale type questions, open-ended questions, and a request for pertinent demographic information. Data was collected and analyzed at the conclusion of the 2000-2001 school year. Findings from this study include information on reasons for selecting and remaining as a teacher in a Catholic school. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for teaching in a Catholic school are examined. Teacher's motivations include the themes of "deeply held values," "profound religious beliefs and practices," and an appreciation for a "supportive environment."
