In comparison to terrestrial environments, wetlands are still far less studied. A collaborative effort among world experts, this book brings the current knowledge concerning trace elements in temporary waterlogged soils and sediments together. It discusses factors controlling the dynamics and release kinetics of trace elements and their underlying biogeochemical processes. It also discusses current technologies for remediating sites contaminated with trace metals, and the role of bioavailability in risk assessment and regulatory decision making. This book is intended for professionals around the world in disciplines related to contaminant bioavailability in aquatic organisms, contaminant fate and transport, remediation technologies, and risk assessment of aquatic and wetland ecosystems.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For over a century, untreated ore and ore-processing wastes have been discharged into the Coeur d'Alene River. Six cores, ranging in length from 72 to 261 centimeters, were obtained along the North and South Fork of Coeur d'Alene River between Enaville and Lake Coeur d'Alene to study the extent of metal enrichment and its distribution patterns within the river sediments. One core was obtained from St. Joe River, which is unaffected by any mining activities, to compare the extent of metal enrichment. Sixty five samples from these cores were subjected to both total digestion and partial leach and analyzed for 23 major and trace elements and lead isotopic compositions. The concentrations of As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Sb, Sr, Tl, Th, Ti, U, and V were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and those of AI, Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Ti as well as Pb and Zn by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Ag was analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. In addition, ICP-MS was used to determine the Pb isotopic composition of the sediments. The chemical data obtained in this study indicate that the sediments of the Coeur d'Alene River are significantly enriched in Ag, As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Sb, and Zn relative to the sediments from the St. Joe River. The highest observed concentrations in the sediments are 115 ppm Ag, 384 ppm As, 330 ppm Cd, 360 ppm Cu, 14% Fe, 13,770 ppm Mn, 228 ppm Mo, 1384 ppm Ni, 41,050 ppm Pb, 228 ppm Sb, and 13,600 ppm Zn. Enrichment factors calculated for the metals relative to the background concentrations (St. Joe River) arc: Ag 200, As 26, Cd 41, Cu 3, Fe 3.5, Mn 25, Pb 211, Sb 75, and Zn 39. The highest concentration of metals are generally observed near the base of the sediments contaminated with mining wastes. There is a sharp decline in metal concentration below the contact of mining and pre-mining sediments. The thickness of the mining sediments in the Coeur d'Alene River varies from 32 to 261 centimeters; the estimated average being 100 centimeters. Strong positive correlations exist among the enriched metals as well as between the metals and Fe and Mn which is suggestive of the presence of enriched metals in oxyhydroxide phases of Fe and Mn rather than in sulfides. The spatial distribution of enriched metals within the lower Coeur d'Alene River indicates that they are fairly well distributed within the river sediments. The slight variation of certain metals is attributed to changes in physico-chemical conditions within the river as well as due to metal mobility. The vertical distribution of the metals shows a considerable variation in their concentrations, especially the mobile metals. The vertical distribution pattern also indicate the existence of strong reducing conditions within the sediment column that probably caused the mobilization of Fe and Mn resulting in redistribution and reprecipitation of the associated metals. The lead isotopic compositions of sediment leaches as well as those subjected to total digestion closely match those of the published lead isotopic composition of the ore in the mining district. The average 207Pb : 206Pb composition in the leaches of sediment samples is 0.945 which is the same as the composition reported for the ore in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, whereas this ratio is significantly lower in St. Joe River sediments (0.824). Therefore, the point source of contamination in the Coeur d'Alene River sediments can be attributed to the ore and ore processing wastes that were discharged into the river for a long period of time. Sediment samples subjected to total digestion indicate ore lead signatures only within the mining sediments. The 207Pb : 206Pb signature sharply declines at the base of mining sediments and goes on decreasing with depth indicating mixing of mining and pre-mining sediments. But the samples subjected to partial leaching reveal constant isotope ratios to greater depths. This suggests that the pre-mining sediments have also been contaminated with the mobilization of the metals from the mining sediments as well as by redistribution and reprecipitation of the metals. The depth of contamination within the pre-mining sediments can be inferred from the isotopic composition. The data obtained in this study suggest that the isotopic composition of stream sediments can be used as an excellent tool to precisely trace the lateral and vertical extent of contamination resulting from mining activities"--Document.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cleveland mine is located near Hunter Creek in Stevens County, Washington. It was active in the past one hundred years and produced several thousands tons of lead, zinc, antimony, silver and copper ores and hundreds of tons of mine waste was dumped in the nearby Hunter Creek. The waste dump contains sulfides of lead, zinc, cadmium, antimony, iron and several other metals, which is exposed to conditions of chemical weathering thereby releasing toxic metals into the streams. Environmental materials such as soil, stream sediment and water samples were collected in the Hunter Creek drainage, as well as in unpolluted areas in the vicinity. These samples were analyzed for 19 trace elements, including toxic heavy metals by electrothermal, flame and cold vapor atomic absorption and inductively coupled argon plasma atomic emission spectrometry to determine their concentration and to investigate the extent of trace element pollution in the area. The elements determined were Ag, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sb, Se, Tl, V and Zn. The relative concentrations of almost all elements in the polluted stream water were found to be several times higher than those in the unpolluted streams; however, none of the toxic elements were found in amounts exceeding the recommended limits for public drinking water standards. The major factors controlling the abundance of these elements in stream water seem to be higher pH (> 7.5), the presence of carbonates and hydrous oxides of iron and other metals. The concentration of the trace elements in the unpolluted soils are similar to those in the unpolluted stream sediments. The polluted stream sediments are highly enriched in the majority of trace elements, especially As, Fe, Mn, Pb, Sb, Tl and Zn and moderately high in Cd, Cu and Hg. The average contents of Ba, Be, Cr and V have not exceed background levels. Se was found in lower concentration in the polluted sediments as compared to unpolluted sediments. The oxidation products including metals, have leached out from the waste dump and have been transported by the stream water. The carbonate minerals in the waste have probably played an important role in the neutralization of any acid produced during the oxidation process and have kept the pH of the stream water high. The average pH of the stream water is 7.5 and ranges from 6.5 to 8.5. Because ofthe high pH most of the metals have partitioned into the sediments by the process of precipitation and adsorption. The hydrous oxides of iron and manganese seem to be effective scavengers for trace elements from water. Samples containing high contents of Fe and Mn are also high in several other trace elements. The mine waste is an ongoing source of pollution in Hunter Creek but the prevailing physicochemical conditions restrict mobilization of the trace element in water. While the sediments are serving as a large storage for these elements, they will release the stored toxic elements if they are subjected to suitable physicochemical conditions such as low pH or low carbonate content in the ambient water"--Document.
