Book excerpt: A multigrid method is defined as having textbook multigrid efficiency (TME) if solutions to the governing system of equations are attained in a computational work that is a small (less than 10) multiple of the operation count in one target-grid residual evaluation. Away to achieve TME for the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations is to apply the distributed relaxation method thereby separating the elliptic and hyperbolic partitions of the equations. Design of a distributed relaxation scheme can be significantly simplified if the target discretization possesses two properties: (1) factorizability, and (2) consistent approximations for the separate factors. The first property implies that the discrete system determinant can be represented as a product of discrete factors, each of them approximating a corresponding factor of the determinant of the differential equations. The second property requires that the discrete factors reflect the physical anisotropies, be stable, and be easily solvable. In this paper, discrete schemes for the nonconservative Euler equations possessing properties (1) and (2) have been derived and analyzed. The accuracy of these scheme has been tested for subsonic flow regimes and is comparable with the accuracy of standard schemes. TME has been demonstrated in solving fully subsonic quasi-one-dimensional flow in a convergent/divergent channel.

Book excerpt: This edited review book on Godunov methods contains 97 articles, all of which were presented at the international conference on Godunov Methods: Theory and Applications, held at Oxford in October 1999, to commemo rate the 70th birthday of the Russian mathematician Sergei K. Godunov. The meeting enjoyed the participation of 140 scientists from 20 countries; one of the participants commented: everyone is here, meaning that virtu ally everybody who had made a significant contribution to the general area of numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws, along the lines first proposed by Godunov in the fifties, was present at the meeting. Sadly, there were important absentees, who due to personal circumstance could not at tend this very exciting gathering. The central theme o{ the meeting, and of this book, was numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws fol lowing Godunov's key ideas contained in his celebrated paper of 1959. But Godunov's contributions to science are not restricted to Godunov's method.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Shock Waves contains a comprehensive, structured coverage of research topics related to shock wave phenomena including shock waves in gases, liquids, solids, and space. Shock waves represent an extremely important physical phenomena which appears to be of special practical importance in three major fields: compressible flow (aerodynamics), materials science, and astrophysics. Shock waves comprise a phenomenon that occurs when pressure builds to force a reaction, i.e. sonic boom that occurs when a jet breaks the speed of sound. This Handbook contains experimental, theoretical, and numerical results which never before appeared under one cover; the first handbook of its kind. The Handbook of Shock Waves is intended for researchers and engineers active in shock wave related fields. Additionally, R&D establishments, applied science & research laboratories and scientific and engineering libraries both in universities and government institutions. As well as, undergraduate and graduate students in fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, and physics. Key Features* Ben-Dor is known as one of the founders of the field of shock waves* Covers a broad spectrum of shock wave research topics* Provides a comprehensive description of various shock wave related subjects* First handbook ever to include under one separate cover: experimental, theoretical, and numerical results

This book was released on 2002 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this article, several sets of boundary conditions or factorizable schemes corresponding to the steady-state compressible Euler equations are evaluated. The analyzed model is a one-dimensional constant-coefficient problem. Numerical tests have been performed for a fully subsonic quasi-one-dimensional flow in a convergent/divergent channel. This paper focuses on the effect of boundary-condition equations on stability and accuracy of the discrete solutions. Explicit correspondence between solutions and boundary conditions is established through a boundary-condition-sensitivity (BCS) matrix. The following new findings are reported: (1) Examples of stable discrete problems contradicting a wide-spread belief that employment of a one-order-lower approximation schemes in an O(h)-small region does not affect the overall accuracy order of the solution have been found and explained. Such counterexamples can only be constructed for systems of differential equations. For scalar equations, the conventional wisdom is correct. (2) A negative effect of overspecified (although, exact) boundary conditions on accuracy and stability of the solution has been observed and explained. (3) Sets of practical boundary conditions for factorizable schemes providing stable second-order accurate solutions have been formulated. These schemes belong to a family of second-order schemes requiring second-order accuracy for some numerical-closure boundary conditions.

It provides the basic theory for momentum, heat and mass transfer in reactive systems. Numerical methods for solving the resulting equations as well as the interplay between physical and numerical modes are discussed. The book is written using the standard terminology of this community. It is intended for researchers and engineers who want to develop their own codes, or who are interested in a deeper insight into commercial CFD codes in order to derive consistent extensions and to overcome "black box" practice. It can also serve as a textbook and reference book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spectrum of higher-order schemes is developed to solve the Navier-Stokes equations in finite-difference formulations. Pade type formulas of up to sixth order with a five-point stencil are developed for the difference scheme. Viscous terms are treated by successive applications of the first derivative operator. However, formulas are also derived for use in a mid-point interpolation-differentiation strategy. For numerical stability, up to tenth-order filtering schemes are developed. The spectral properties of the differentiation and filtering schemes are examined and guidelines are provided to choose proper filter coefficients. Special high-order formulas are obtained for differentiation and filtering in the vicinity of boundaries. The coefficients required for systematic implementation of Neumann-type boundary conditions are also presented. A brief description is provided of the manner in which the FDL3DI code is enhanced by coupling the approximately-factored procedure with these compact-difference based algorithms and by incorporating an explicit fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme.

It aims to provide the reader with a sufficiently detailed and extensive, mathematically precise, but comprehensible guide, through a wide spectrum of mathematical and computational methods used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the numerical simulation of compressible flow. Up-to-date techniques applied in the numerical solution of inviscid as well as viscous compressible flow on unstructured meshes are explained, thus allowing the simulation of complex three-dimensional technically relevant problems. Among some of the methods addressed are finite volume methods using approximate Riemann solvers, finite element techniques, such as the streamline diffusion and the discontinuous Galerkin methods, and combined finite volume - finite element schemes. The book gives a complex insight into the numerics of compressible flow, covering the development of numerical schemes and their theoretical mathematical analysis, their verification on test problems and use in solving practical engineering problems. The book will be helpful to specialists coming into contact with CFD - pure and applied mathematicians, aerodynamists, engineers, physicists and natural scientists. It will also be suitable for advanced undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of mathematics and technical sciences.
