Book excerpt: In this book, we quantified the effect of using management practices to increase current maize productivity and reduce production-consumption gap that is about 45%. These suggested management practices were precise land leveling and cultivation on raised beds, which can save 25% of the applied water to surface irrigation. Furthermore, we quantified the effect of intercropping maize with soybean, maize intercropped with tomato, cowpea intercropped with maize and relay intercropping potato with maize on reducing maize production-consumpation gap. Similar procedure was done under climate change in 2030 using highly accurate weather data. Finally, quantification of the effect of these suggested management practices on maize water productivity was done. These quantifications are very important for policy makers to be included in their future plans.

Furthermore, it provides on-farm management that faces water scarcity under current situation and under climate change. Changing cultivation method (raised beds instead of furrows or basins) or increasing irrigation application efficiency (sprinkler or drip systems instead of surface irrigation) can reduce the applied water. Irrigated agriculture, although profitable, it endures wasteful use of valuable water resources. Taking into account the risk of climate change, developing countries like Egypt will highly suffer. Furthermore, the effect of intercropping (two crops use the applied water to one of them), and/or using crop rotations (arrange crops to reduce the applied water, increase water productivity and sustain soil fertility) on production and consumed irrigation water by crops were comprehensively analyzed.

The results revealed that farmers’ responses were driven by a multiplicity of factors, beyond water scarcity or profit maximization. These additional factors include food security of the family, risk management, social capital and history of farmers, and most unexpectedly the collective dimension of crop choice. The findings of this study expose the limitations of projects, modeling exercises or policy recommendations that are too often based on the oversimplified view of profit maximization as the basis of farming system dynamics.
