Book excerpt: Polymeric facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) driven by reversible amine-CO2 reactions were developed in this study for selective CO2 separation from flue gas (CO2/N2) and syngas (CO2/H2). For post-combustion carbon capture, a FTM was synthesized in a composite membrane configuration with a 170 nm selective layer coated on a nanoporous substrate. In the selective layer, polyvinylamine with amine-sites covalently bonded to the polymer backbone was used as fixed-site carrier and an amino acid salt, synthesized by deprotonating sarcosine with 2-(1-piperazinyl)ethylamine, was blended as mobile carrier. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes wrapped by a copolymer poly(vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinyl acetate) were dispersed in the selective layer as reinforcement fillers to refrain the selective layer penetration upon vacuum suction. The membrane demonstrated a CO2 permeance of 1451 GPU (1 GPU = 10-6 cm3(STP)·cm-2·s-1·cmHg-1) and a CO2/N2 selectivity >140 at testing conditions relevant to this separation modality. A field trial with 1.4 m2 spiral-wound membrane modules fabricated from this FTM was conducted with actual flue gas at National Carbon Capture Center in Wilsonville, AL. The separation performances of the modules agreed well with those of the lab-scale flat-sheet membranes. A 500-h stability was demonstrated in spite of the interference of system upset and flue gas outage.

Book excerpt: Developments of green energy alternatives (e.g., ethanol) and advanced CO2 capture technologies play a crucial role in solving the energy and climate crisis. Specifically, membrane-based separation processes provide opportunities as potentially energy-efficient means to extract alcohols or capture CO2. For alcohol extraction, ultrathin-film nanoporous membranes such as zeolite nanosheets may offer large separation factors and high fluxes because of their selective ethanol-to-water adsorption and short diffusion pathway. However, systematic investigations of potential nanosheet candidates are still missing to date, while atomistic understandings of their separation mechanism and structure-property relationship remain limited. For CO2 capture, facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) that utilize reversible chemical reactions between amino groups and CO2 have been demonstrated to offer notably enhanced selectivity and permeance. However, molecular understandings of the reactive diffusion mechanism of CO2 in the FTMs remain limited. This dissertation conducts computational studies to study membrane materials for ethanol separation and CO2 capture. Specifically, in Chapter 2, a screening study of zeolite nanosheets as pervaporation membranes for ethanol separation is discussed to show their separation performance and shed light on the relationship between separation factors, adsorption selectivities, and structural features. In Chapter 3, understandings achieved in the previous chapter are applied to study the alcohol/water pervaporation separation using zeolite membranes with various Si/Al ratios. Key factors identified in Chapter 2, such as surface silanol density and adsorption selectivity, are again shown to play an important role, which rationalizes the separation performance observed experimentally. Aside from zeolite materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a promising class of nanoporous materials as membrane candidates. In order to facilitate the future large-scale screening study of MOFs, in Chapter 4, a multi-layer connectivity-based atom contribution (m-CBAC) approach has been developed to offer fast and accurate charge assignments for MOFs. Computational studies are also performed to investigate the polymer membranes, particularly facilitated transport membranes (FTMs), for CO2 capture. In Chapter 5, computational techniques have been employed to study the role of mobile carriers at a molecular level from the amine–CO2 reaction chemistry, reactive diffusivities of carriers, and CO2. Moreover, in order to investigate the reactive diffusion mechanism of CO2, reactive force fields (ReaxFFs) have been employed in the MD simulations. A new ReaxFF has been developed to reproduce the energy of inter/intra-molecular interactions and the reaction energy computed by density functional theory (DFT) along the reaction pathways for promising mobile carriers. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates the capability of computational methods to facilitate the development of novel membrane materials for liquid and gas separations.

Book excerpt: Membrane processes offer several advantages that make them ideal for industrial gas separation applications, including modularity, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. Facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) have seen significant developments recently and provide an improved technology platform for post-combustion CO2 capture. In this research, two types of amine carriers incorporated in FTMs were investigated for carbon capture from flue gas. In the first section of this study, we developed an improved method to synthesize sterically hindered polyvinylamine, which was successfully used as a fixed-site carrier for the synthesis of thin-film FTMs. The use of sterically hindered polyamines has been shown to significantly improve the ability of membranes to transport CO2. Moderately hindered poly-N-methyl-N-vinylamine (PVAm-CH3) with a high molecular weight was synthesized through stepwise reductive amination. A fluorinated alcohol with high polarity was used in the synthesis to shift the equilibrium to the formation of the imine intermediate for higher N-methylation. The method of preventing over-alkylation resulted in an increased yield of the target product and prevented the formation of side products. PVAm-CH3 exhibited excellent CO2 facilitation with a CO2 permeability of 445.7 Barrer (1 Barrer = 3.349 x 10–16 mol m m–2 s–1 Pa–1) and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 70.3. The optimized PVAm-CH3 membrane containing incorporating the amino acid salt (AAS), 2-(1-piperazinyl)ethylamine sarcosinate (PZEA-Sar) exhibited a superior CO2 performance of 1071 GPU (1 GPU = 3.349 x 10–10 mol m–2 s–1 Pa–1) and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 183 at 57°C and a feed gas pressure of 111.64 kPa (1.5 psig). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to explain the enhanced performance of PVAm-CH3 membranes. Some AASs have been demonstrated to be effective mobile carriers in FTMs to achieve superior CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity for CO2 capture from flue gas. A deeper understanding of how the structures of different AASs affect the chemistry of the amine–CO2 reaction is essential for the future development of more efficient AAS mobile carriers. In the second part of this study, we used NMR spectroscopy to study the amine–CO2 reaction chemistry and the CO2 absorption properties of AASs. PZEA-Sar exhibited a higher CO2 loading and preference for the more efficient bicarbonate pathway as well as formed a uniform membrane, making it a more preferred mobile carrier. The positive correlation between the CO2 loading of AAS (mol CO2/g AAS) and the CO2 permeance of FTMs suggested that AAS with a higher CO2 loading may improve the performance of FTMs. The diffusion of carbamate products played the most important role in CO2 transport under low CO2 partial pressure. As the partial pressure of CO2 increased, the contribution from bicarbonate products became more significant. The lower CO2 absorption at a higher temperature suggests that the enhanced CO2 permeance in FTMs was promoted by the increased diffusion rate of amine–CO2 reaction products.
