Book excerpt: Four lost souls on a collision course with either disaster or redemption. A random community of Faces in the Fire. Meet Kurt, a truck-driver-turned-sculptor with no memory of his past. Corinne, an e-mail spammer whose lymphoma isn't responding to treatment. Grace, a tattoo artist with an invented existence and a taste for heroin. And Stan, a reluctant hit man haunted by his terrifying gift for killing. They don't know each other, at least not yet. But something--or someone--is at work in the fabric of their lives, weaving them all together. A catfish, a series of numbers scribbled on a napkin, a devastating fire, and something mysterious. Something that could send them hurtling down the highway to disaster--or down the road to redemption. But they won't know which is which until they've managed to say yes to the whispers in their souls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All three books in the American Book Award–winning Memory of Fire Trilogy available in a single volume for the first time. Eduardo Galeano’s Memory of Fire Trilogy defies categorization—or perhaps creates its own. It is a passionate, razor-sharp, lyrical history of North and South America, from the birth of the continent’s indigenous peoples through the end of the twentieth century. The three volumes form a haunting and dizzying whole that resurrects the lives of Indians, conquistadors, slaves, revolutionaries, poets, and more. The first book, Genesis, pays homage to the many origin stories of the tribes of the Americas, and paints a verdant portrait of life in the New World through the age of the conquistadors. The second book, Faces and Masks, spans the two centuries between the years 1700 and 1900, in which colonial powers plundered their newfound territories, ultimately giving way to a rising tide of dictators. And in the final installment, Century of the Wind, Galeano brings his story into the twentieth century, in which a fractured continent enters the modern age as popular revolts blaze from North to South. This celebrated series is a landmark of contemporary Latin American writing, and a brilliant document of culture.

Book excerpt: Do we read character in faces? What information do faces actually provide? What are the social and psychological consequences of reading character in faces? Zebrowitz unmasks the face and provides the first systematic, scientific account of our tendency to judge people by their appearance. Offering an in-depth discussion of two appearance qualities that influence our impressions of others—“baby-faceness” and “attractiveness”—and an analysis of these impressions, Zebrowitz has written an accessible and valuable book for professionals and general readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Many Faces Do You Have? is a poem sequence that interrogates intimacy, each poem a face the poet discovers, a reflection revealed in response to inner questioning. In a voice of quiet sonority, these lyrics journey from a high-school gym dance to a moonlit beach polka. They linger over sushi in Montreal and an airline meal at 40,000 feet on a flight. They touch joy and pain and celebrate the vicissitudes of love that goes “into the tangled heartland / where there is no trail,” as a gift of being. A face is such a strange thing. Obsessed with distortion, Modigliani loved elongated faces like Tamara’s at a distance, a flattened oval, two black jewels. He painted with a dagger in his teeth, they say, to see the face within the face — grave, cold-eyed as Nefertiti, Queen of Egypt, whom I’ve always loved for her name alone.

Book excerpt: Scientists have emphasized the innate, genetically based nature of our fascination with the human face and its almost limitless expressive capacity, all of which is represented in the art of the last six centuries. But little attention has been paid to the anomoly of the vacuous expressions of earlier facial representations. Brener attributes this change to a change in the functioning of the human brain, as well as the role of cultural factors. It is the evolution of both genes and culture that has resulted in a marked increase in the human ability to create and interpret facial expressions. The result of this has impacted human behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the real life of many Christians around the world. This book talks about the two faces of love and fire that today are in many Christian people, and they cause the many people who see them to not want to go to church or be near Christian people. Many times the fault of having these two faces in the churches comes from the same church, from its priests, pastors, and leaders, oftentimes because of the bad image of Christianity created by the Christians themselves. An incorrect image, an image different from the one that Christ wants. He wants an image of love that begins with you and flows toward others, not from others toward you. It is only this: love your neighbor as yourself. An image with only one face based on what Christ wants is what you will read in this book. Him sacrificing Himself and the value of His blood shed for our salvation is what I look forward to you seeing in this book.

Book excerpt: After living in Southern CA for 11 years I went back home to where I’m from to start my life over again, after going through a traumatic experience. It’s not been easy having only God & prayer for support but I’ve been amazed at the things have just come my way out of nowhere. After getting back to the Midwest I started hanging with some people who were some of my best friends growing up. We were having bonfires, most of the time, in the woods at the Wabash River frequently. The experience of coming back home has, for the most part, been healing. I immediately started taking photos of the fires & it quickly became my new passion. I would even arrange the wood & logs to see what would happen with what I saw in my photos. I am amazed at things I was seeing in my photos! The different color schemes were surprising & beautiful. I was fascinated by all the different directions & colors of the flames in just 1 photo but the most intriguing thing to me is that I could actually see faces & animal shapes in quite a few of my photo’s. Another fascinating thing to me is when I show people my photo’s, they see different things than I have been seeing! Everyone I showed my photos to are intrigued & want to see more so I thought it would be cool to provide a coffee table book of my photography so more people could enjoy what I’ve been able to create. It has been really nice to finally focus on 1 of my artist abilities again but I now pray, hope & trust that driving for a living can soon take the back seat over being an artist.

Book excerpt: For Freawaru, proud daughter of Danish King Hrothgar, growing up in a sixth-century Viking settlement should be a wonderful adventure. Blessed with a strong mother and a loving nurse, she also bears a birthmark that promises future power. Only the arrival of her treacherous cousin Hrothulf, who intends to become a rival for her father's attention, mars her happiness. But Freawaru has no hint of what is about to come. Without warning, darkness envelops Freawaru's innocence and brings unimaginable terror as a night-stalking monster invades the mead hall. When a stranger arrives and off ers his assistance to aid the kingdom in fi ghting the Grendel with magic, runes, and, shockingly, poison, everyone wonders if Unferth can live up to his promises. Meanwhile, two other contenders enter the picture: Beowulf, a boastful warrior who pledges to kill the monster with his bare hands; and Ingeld, a feuding rival chieftain who gives his word to lay aside his thirst for blood vengeance in order to save the kingdom from evil. Each man presents a challenge to Freawaru, whose path ahead seems unclear. With her survival at stake, Freawaru must decide whom she can trust-before it is too late.
