Book excerpt: The physical and catalytic properties of silica supported platinum or rhodium model catalysts are studied under both ultra high vacuum (UHV) and elevated pressure reaction conditions (>1torr). Platinum or rhodium nanoparticles are vapor deposited onto a SiO2/Mo(112) surface and characterized using various surface analytical methods. CO chemisorption is utilized as a surface probe to estimate the concentration of various sites on the nanoparticles through thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) along with microscopy techniques to estimate particle size. The results are compared with hard sphere models of face centered cubic metals described as truncated cubo-octahedron. Results demonstrate the excellent agreement between chemisorption and hard sphere models in estimating the concentration of undercoordinated atoms on the nanoparticle surface. Surfaces are then subjected to high pressure reaction conditions to test the efficacy of utilizing the rate of a chemical reaction to obtain structural information about the surface. The surfaces are translated in-situ to a high pressure reaction cell where both structure insensitive and sensitive reactions are performed. Structure insensitive reactions (e.g. CO oxidation) allow a method to calculate the total active area on a per atom basis for silica supported platinum and rhodium model catalysts under reaction conditions. While structure sensitive reactions allow an estimate of the types of reaction sites, such as step sites ([less than or equal to]C7) under reaction conditions (e.g. n-heptane dehydrocyclization). High pressure structure sensitive reactions (e.g. ethylene hydroformylation) are also shown to drastically alter the morphology of the surface by dispersing nanoparticles leading to inhibition of catalytic pathways. Moreover, the relationships between high index single crystals, oxide supported nanoparticles, and high surface area technical catalysts are established. Overall, the results demonstrate the utility of model catalysts in understanding the structure-activity relationships in heterogeneous catalytic reactions and the usefulness of high pressure reactions as an analytical probe of surface morphology.

Book excerpt: In an effort to understand the molecular ingredients of catalytic activity and selectivity toward the end of tuning a catalyst for 100% selectivity, advanced nanolithography techniques were developed and utilized to fabricate well-ordered two-dimensional model catalyst arrays of metal nanostructures on an oxide support for the investigation of reaction selectivity. In-situ and ex-situ surface science techniques were coupled with catalytic reaction data to characterize the molecular structure of the catalyst systems and gain insight into hydrocarbon conversion in heterogeneous catalysis. Through systematic variation of catalyst parameters (size, spacing, structure, and oxide support) and catalytic reaction conditions (hydrocarbon chain length, temperature, pressures, and gas composition), the data presented in this dissertation demonstrate the ability to direct a reaction by rationally adjusting, through precise control, the design of the catalyst system. Electron beam lithography (EBL) was employed to create platinum nanoparticles on an alumina (Al2O3) support. The Pt nanoparticle spacing (100-150-nm interparticle distance) was varied in these samples, and they were characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), both before and after reactions. The TEM studies showed the 28-nm Pt nanoparticles with 100 and 150-nm interparticle spacing on alumina to be polycrystalline in nature, with crystalline sizes of 3-5 nm. The nanoparticle crystallites increased significantly after heat treatment. The nanoparticles were still mostly polycrystalline in nature, with 2-3 domains. The 28-nm Pt nanoparticles deposited on alumina were removed by the AFM tip in contact mode with a normal force of approximately 30 nN. After heat treatment at 500 C in vacuum for 3 hours, the AFM tip, even at 4000 nN, could not remove the platinum nanoparticles. The increase of adhesion upon heat treatment indicates stronger bonding between the Pt and the support at the metal-oxide interface.

Book excerpt: Model heterogeneous catalysts have been synthesized and studied to better understand how the surface structure of noble metal nanoparticles affects catalytic performance. In this project, monodisperse rhodium and platinum nanoparticles of controlled size and shape have been synthesized by solution phase polyol reduction, stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Model catalysts have been developed using these nanoparticles by two methods: synthesis of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) in the presence of nanoparticles (nanoparticle encapsulation, NE) to form a composite of metal nanoparticles supported on SBA-15 and by deposition of the particles onto a silicon wafer using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer deposition. The particle shapes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) and the sizes were determined by TEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and in the case of NE samples, room temperature H2 and CO adsorption isotherms. Catalytic studies were carried out in homebuilt gas-phase reactors. For the nanoparticles supported on SBA-15, the catalysts are in powder form and were studied using the homebuilt systems as plug-flow reactors. In the case of nanoparticles deposited on silicon wafers, the same systems were operated as batch reactors. This dissertation has focused on the synthesis, characterization, and reaction studies of model noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. Careful control of particle size and shape has been accomplished though solution phase synthesis of Pt and Rh nanoparticles in order to elucidate further structure-reactivity relationships in noble metal catalysis.

Developments in manufacturing processes are largely driven by continued improvements in catalytic materials, which aim to increase production volumes while minimizing costs along with safety and environmental hazards. In order to achieve these goals, however, a rational approach in catalyst design must be pursued that aims to understand and build upon the fundamental structural, electronic, and chemical properties governing catalytic performance. To that purpose, the work presented in this dissertation makes use of kinetic experiments, theoretical models, and advanced characterization techniques to generate a fundamental understanding of noble metal surfaces employed in a variety of catalytic reaction systems. In Chapter 2, we discuss the use of N2 physisorption, CO chemisorption, and NH3 temperature programed desorption to evaluate the effect of support acidity on the reactivity profiles of various zeolite-supported Pt and Pt-Sn catalysts for the non-oxidative coupling of methane to ethylene and aromatics. Reactivity studies for Pt-Sn/H-ZSM-5 catalysts at 973 K showed that, while all catalysts produced ethylene as the primary product, increasing support acidity led to an increase in naphthalene selectivity at the expense of benzene selectivity. Volcano-shaped profiles observed for the generation of aromatic products suggest that the formation of a reactive hydrocarbon pool on acidic support surfaces could be responsible for the oligomerization of ethylene. Notably, the Pt-Sn/H-ZSM-5 (SiO2:Al2O3 = 50) catalyst was found to be comparable to the state-of-the-art Mo/H-ZSM-5 catalysts in terms of carbon product generation and resistance to coke formation. In Chapter 3, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to highlight the effect of local electronic and structural environments in specially synthesized metallic catalysts. The local coordination and nearest-neighbor distance of Pd species were evaluated to understand metal dispersion and the effect of catalyst support on the extent of bimetallic particle formation in Pd, AgPd, CuPd, and AuPd catalysts synthesized by controlled surface reactions (CSR) for a variety of amination, hydrodechlorination, and hydrogenation reactions. Near-edge structure analyses were also used on these Pd catalysts, as well as on a set of Mo-containing multi-metallic catalysts prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) for synthesis gas conversion, to understand catalyst reducibility along with potential support and hydrogen spillover effects on the extent of metal reduction. Chapter 4 evaluates the effects of catalyst support and pretreatment conditions on the hydrogenation of acetone over SiO2-, Al2O3-, and ZSM-5-supported platinum catalysts. Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts were found to have specific conversion rates and turnover frequencies that were 2 - 3 orders of magnitude higher than those observed over Pt/SiO2 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts, regardless of zeolite acidity or pretreatment conditions. For Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts, the higher activity was achieved by increasing calcination and decreasing reduction temperatures, likely due to the effects of these treatments on the morphology of the platinum particles. CO-FTIR measurements showed a shift to higher frequencies of the Pt-CO band in Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts compared to Pt/SiO2, which alluded to the interactions between Pt and the porous zeolite structure as a source of the activity enhancements observed. Chapter 5 introduces the use of transient kinetics studies and theoretical modeling to explore the importance of surface coverage effects in the hydrogenation of acetone over platinum. Transient models based on steady-state microkinetics using static and dynamic inclusion of surface coverage via the Langmuir and Bragg-Williams approximations, respectively, predicted notable differences in the decay profiles of the most abundant reactive intermediate (MARI) from the catalytic surface. Experimental studies using steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) methods served to validate the theoretical predictions for transients induced by complete acetone removal from or its substitution in the reactant feed and provided tangible evidence for the importance of surface coverage effects in understanding the reactivity of platinum catalysts for acetone hydrogenation. Lastly, Chapter 6 addresses possible future research directions in the field of transient kinetics studies.

Book excerpt: Model materials consisting of metal nanoparticles loaded onto oxide supports were synthesized, characterized, and investigated in a number of catalytic chemical reactions. By varying the size, shape, and composition of nanoparticle, as well as the material used to support the nanoparticles, it was found that small changes to the catalyst can have enormous changes to the reaction activity and selectivity. Investigation of these carefully synthesized catalysts via in situ characterization, and reaction studies, leads to a deeper understanding of the molecular level parameters that govern catalysis. Through study of the properties of the nanoparticles it was discovered that nanoparticle size and shape have a dominant role in the chemoselective catalysis of furfural over platinum nanoparticles. When vapor phase furfural and hydrogen gas were passed over Pt nanoparticles ranging in size from 1.5 to 7.1 nm, the catalytic selectivity was found to be dominated by the size of the nanoparticle. Large nanoparticles promoted hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol, while smaller nanoparticles favored decarbonylation to furan. The same size specific selectivity was found in the hydrogenative reforming (the transformation of hydrocarbons to branched isomers) of C6 hydrocarbons, in which Pt nanoparticle size controls isomerization selectivity. Methylcyclopentane was found to be extremely size dependent at lower temperatures (553 K). It was found that smaller sized nanoparticles favored isomer formation, while larger sizes catalyzed the aromatization reaction more efficiently. n-hexane was found to be much less dependent on particle size, but still showed an increase in isomerization with small particles over larger sized Pt nanoparticles. The composition of PtxRh1-x bimetallic nanoparticles was also studied. These catalysts were characterized under hexane reforming conditions with Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (AP-XPS), in order to find the actual surface atomic composition under real catalytic working conditions. By using AP-XPS and catalytic data in tandem, it was found that an optimum Rh loading occurred when the surface ensemble statistically favored one Rh atom surrounded by Pt atoms. By utilizing different oxide materials for catalytic supports the flow of charge can play a role in the reaction at the surface or interface in a phenomenon known as the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). When Pt nanoparticles were loaded onto mesoporous supports made of Co3O4, NiO, MnO2, Fe2O3, and CeO2 it was found that their activity for carbon monoxide oxidation was greatly enhanced relative to the support alone or Pt loaded onto inert mesoporous silica. This finding demonstrates that the interface of the metallic Pt nanoparticle and the oxide support is able to produce turnovers that are orders of magnitude higher than the two materials separately. When the same type of experiments were investigated with n-hexane as the reactant and macroporous Al2O3, TiO2, Nb2O5, Ta2O5, and ZrO2 were utilized as supports, it was found that the reaction selectivity was greatly altered depending on the catalytic support material. TiO2, Nb2O5, and Ta2O5 (all of which are strong Lewis acids) were found to be much more selective for isomer production than the standard SiO2 mesoporous silica supported Pt nanoparticle catalyst. Finally, an acidified mesoporous silica material was utilized as the support. This material was synthesized by using AlCl3 to modify the surface of mesoporous silica. This support was found to have no activity for hexane isomerization alone. However, when Pt nanoparticles were supported on the material, the activity and isomer selectivity in hexane reforming was increased several orders of magnitude as compared to the same nanoparticles supported on unmodified mesoporous silica. This dissertation builds on the existing knowledge of known concepts in catalysis science such as structure sensitive reactions, the metal-support interaction, and acid-base chemistry. The results show how small changes in the active sites of a catalyst can create large changes in the catalytic chemistry. This research demonstrates how careful material control, characterization and reaction study can help to elucidate the molecular level components necessary to design efficient catalysts.

Synthesis and Characterization of Platinum Based Catalysts for Fuel Cells

Book excerpt: Platinum (Pt) and platinum alloys have attracted wide attention as catalysts to attain high performance to increase the power density and reduce the component cost of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Extensive research has been conducted in the areas of new alloy development and understanding of mechanisms of electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The durability of PEMFCs is also a major barrier to the commercialization of these fuel cells. Recent studies have suggested that potential cycling can gradually lead to loss of active surface area due to Pt dissolution and nanoparticle grain growth [1]. In this thesis we report a one-step synthesis of highly-dispersed Pt nanoparticles and Pt- Cobalt supported on Ketjen carbon black (20% Pt/C & 20% Pt3Co/C) as electro-catalysts for PEMFCs. Pt particles with size in the range of ~ 2.6nm (Pt/C) and 3.9 nm (Pt3Co/C) were obtained through adsorption on carbon supports and subsequently thermal decomposition of platinum acetylacetonate (Pt(acac)2). A comparative characterization analysis, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), FT-iR, EDAX, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, was performed on the synthesized and commercial (46.5wt% TKK) catalysts. The analysis was to reveal the Pt dispersion on the carbon support, particle size and distribution, electrochemical surface area (ECA), and ORR activities of these catalysts. It was found that the synthesized Pt/C showed similar particle size to that of the TKK catalysts (2.6nm and 2.7nm, respectively), but narrower particle size distribution; while the particle size for Pt3Co/C was found to be ~3.9 nm. Accelerated durability tests (ADT) under potential cycles were also performed for Pt/C and TKK to study the electrochemical degradation of the catalysts in corrosive environments. The ADTs revealed that the two catalysts (Pt/C & TKK) were comparable with respect to degradation in ECA and ORR activities. Initial electrochemical evaluation of Pt3Co/C was conducted, but durability studies were not attempted in this thesis due to its worse ORR kinetics than those of the Pt/C catalyst. From the experimental data, it was found that particle size impacted negatively the ECA and ORR activity of the catalysts.
