Book excerpt: This occupational survey report addresses the Fabrication and Parachute career ladder (AFSC 427X3). The Training Development Services Division of the USAF Occupational Measurement Center (USAFOMC/OMT) requested this study to determine field training needs and to gather data for validating the Specialty Training Standard (STS). AFSC 427X3 was last surveyed in December 1980. The present AFSC 427X3 career ladder emerged from the merger of the Parachute Rigger career ladder (AFSC 582X1) and Fabric and Rubber Products career ladder (AFSC 582X0) in April 1977. The Fabrication and Parachute career ladder's present duties include assembling, inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and packing parachute systems and floatation equipment. Additionally, they inspect, repair, and fabricate fabric items and perform shop repair of rubberized items. Initial training for AFSC 427X3 personnel is given in a 12-week, 1-day course at Chanute AFB. This course, C3ABR42733, covers and techniques and functions of fabrication and parachute specialists. These include repairing floatation equipment and antiexposure suits, servicing parachute systems, and maintaining and operating sewing machines of fabricate and repair aircrew flight clothing, protective covers, and upholstery and aircraft soundproofing. Other topics taught include using technical orders, maintenance management, Air Force system of supply, shop and flightline safety, career progression, and blueprint interpretation. The merger of these two ladders resulted in a new AFSC, 427X3, titled Fabrication and Parachute. The current project was requested by TTGXM, Chanute AFB, Illinois, in order to measure the impact of merging the two ladders. In the past, the parachute shop and the fabric shop were often located close4 to each other, and often shared work. They are now under a single shop organization with sections defining mush the same separation of work as before, particularly in the larger shops. The current survey will reflect the results of the merger. Topics discussed in this report include: (1) survey methodology; (2) job structure within the ladder; (3) an analysis of skill level groups; and (4) a comparison of the results of the current survey with previous surveys.
