Book excerpt: Fable, as a form of literary art, had at all times a great attraction for Mr. Stevenson; and in an early review of Lord Lytton's Fables in Song he attempted to define some of its proper aims and methods. This class of work, according to his conception of the matter, belonged essentially several of his own semi-supernatural stories, such as "Will of the Mill," "Markheim," and even "Jekyll and Hyde;" in the composition of which there was combined with the dream element, in at least an equal measure, the element of moral allegory or apologue. He was accustomed also to try his hand occasionally on the composition of fables more strictly so called, and cast in the conventional brief and familiar form. By the winter of 1887-88 he had enough of these by him, together with a few others running to greater length, and conceived in a more mystic and legendary vein, to enable him, as he thought, to see his way towards making a book of them. Such a book he promised to Messrs. Longman on the occasion of a visit paid him in New York by a member of the firm in the spring of 1888. Then came his voyage to the Pacific and residence at Samoa. Among the multitude of new interests and images which filled his mind during the last six years of his life, he seems to have given little thought to the proposed book of fables. One or two, however, as will be seen, were added to the collection during this period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncle Remus Stories (1906) by Joel Chandler Harris (1845-1908), with illustratrions. Uncle Remus is a collection of animal stories, songs, and oral folklore, collected from Southern United States African-Americans. Many of the stories are didactic, much like those of Aesop's Fables and the stories of Jean de La Fontaine. Uncle Remus is a kindly old former slave who serves as a storytelling device, passing on the folktales to children gathered around him. Br'er Rabbit ("Brother Rabbit") is the main character of the stories, a likable character, prone to tricks and trouble-making who is often opposed by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. In one tale, Br'er Fox constructs a lump of tar and puts clothing on it. When Br'er Rabbit comes along he addresses the "tar baby" amiably, but receives no response. Br'er Rabbit becomes offended by what he perceives as Tar Baby's lack of manners, punches it, and becomes stuck.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an influential American writer of weird and horror fiction. Lovecraft's writing often explored themes of existential dread, forbidden knowledge, and the insignificance of humanity in the face of incomprehensible cosmic forces. In this book, we present you with five stories of Lovecraft—‘The Shunned House,’ ‘The Haunter of the Dark,’ ‘The Picture in the House,’ ‘The Rats in the Walls,’ and ‘The Dreams in the Witch House,’—each in its own way reveals his mastery of cosmic horror, weaving together ancient evils and the fragility of human sanity. In ‘The Shunned House,’ Lovecraft delves into the history of a cursed dwelling, its dark secrets, and the sinister forces that plague its residents. ‘The Haunter of the Dark’ explores the terror of forbidden knowledge and the dreadful consequences of uncovering ancient truths. ‘The Picture in the House’ and ‘The Rats in the Walls’ delve into the hidden horrors lurking in the past, in old books and beneath the foundations of ancestral homes, reminding us that history can be a grim and unsettling revelation. Finally, ‘The Dreams in the Witch House’ takes readers on a journey through the ominous corridors of Arkham, where academic curiosity leads to encounters with eldritch horrors. Lovecraft's blend of psychological dread and cosmic malevolence continues to make these stories essential reading for fans of horror fiction, leaving a lasting impression on those who dare to explore the depths of his eldritch imagination.

Friedman has woven 24 illustrative tales that offer fresh perspectives on familiar human foibles and reflect the author's humor, pathos, and understanding. Friedman takes on resistance and other "demons" to show that neither insight, nor encouragement, nor intimidation can in themselves motivate an unmotivated person to change. These tales playfully demonstrate that new ideas, new questions, and imagination, more than accepted wisdom, provide each of us with the keys to overcoming stubborn emotional barriers and facilitating real change both in ourselves and others. Thought-provoking discussion questions for each fable are included. See also the downloadable audiobook, Friedman's Fables: Favorites Read by the Author, featuring 15 of the tales narrated in Dr. Friedman's inimitable style.
