Book Synopsis The Making of Modern Samoa by : Malama Meleisea
Download or read book The Making of Modern Samoa written by Malama Meleisea and published by [email protected]. This book was released on 1987 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since independence in January 1962, several constitutional court cases have exposed the dilemma which the Western Samoa Government is facing balancing fa'a Samoa (Samoan customs and traditions) with Western legal systems of authority. This book traces the clash between Samoan and Western notions of government and law from the 1830s to the 1980s emphasizing the hitherto neglected interpretation of events from a Samoan perspective. As a critical reinterpretation of the literature on Western Samoa, drawing on oral sources and material from the archives of the Land and Titles Court of Western Samoa, the book provides important new insights into pre-colonial regimes, racial issues and the contemporary political problems of the independent state of Western Samoa."--Back cover.

The population of Samoa is approximately 200,000, with the majority being of Samoan descent. The official languages are Samoan and English, with Samoan being widely spoken in everyday life. One of the most famous aspects of Samoan culture is the fa'a Samoa, which emphasizes respect for family, community, and elders. Samoa is also known for its traditional Samoan dance and music, including the fire knife dance, which is performed by young men using long, sharp knives that are set on fire. Sometimes sad, often exhilarating and always interesting, this is a fascinating insight into an ancient culture viewed from the perspective of women. In an often male dominated society the book tells us much that we may have already suspected. ... that even in overtly male societies women are powerful.

Book Synopsis Narrative and Identity Construction in the Pacific Islands by : Farzana Gounder
Download or read book Narrative and Identity Construction in the Pacific Islands written by Farzana Gounder and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising of more than twenty five percent of the world’s known languages, the Pacific is considered to be the most linguistically diverse region in the world. What unifies the region is the culture of storytelling, which provides a fundamental means for perpetuating cultural knowledge across generations. The volume brings together linguists, literary theorists, anthropologists and historians to explore the Pacific peoples’ constructions of identities through narrative. Chapters are organized under three themes: fine grained analysis at the storyworld level, the interactional context of narrative telling, and finally, the interconnections between narrative and cultural memory. The volume reflects the Pacific region’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity, with discussions on the narrativization patterns in Australian and New Zealand English, Palmerston Island and Pitkern-Norfl’k English, Fiji Hindi, Hawaiian, Samoan, Solomon Island Pidgin, the Australian Aboriginal languages Jaminjung and Kriol, the Micronesian languages Mortlockese and Guam Chamorros, and the Vanuatuan languages Auluan, Neverver and Sa.
Book Synopsis Nature-based Tourism in Peripheral Areas by : Colin Michael Hall
Download or read book Nature-based Tourism in Peripheral Areas written by Colin Michael Hall and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature-based Tourism in Peripheral Areas provides a comprehensive examination of this form of tourism development as it occurs within alpine, forest, sub-polar, island, coastal and marine environments. This book goes beyond much of the debate surrounding ecotourism and the impacts of tourism in vulnerable environments to place nature-based tourism in a wider regional context, particularly when for many peripheral regions tourism remains one of the key opportunities for economic development. Therefore, a central theme that is present throughout many of the chapters is the role that nature-based tourism can play as the catalyst for larger regional development of regions. The book will serve as essential reading to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in tourism and related degrees where the major focus is on tourism that occurs within peripheral regions. It will also serve as a key reference to researchers and professionals interested in the role of tourism as a regional development tool.

Book Synopsis Theologies from the Pacific by : Jione Havea
Download or read book Theologies from the Pacific written by Jione Havea and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers engagements with topics in mainline theology that concern the lifelines in and of the Pacific (Pasifika). The essays are grouped into three clusters. The first, Roots, explores the many roots from which theologies in and of Pasifika grow – sea and (is)land, Christian teachings and scriptures, native traditions and island ways. The second, Reads, presents theologies informed and inspired by readings of written and oral texts, missionary traps and propaganda, and teachings and practices of local churches. The final cluster, Routes, places Pasifika theologies upon the waters so that they may navigate and voyage. The ‘amanaki (hope) of this work is in keeping talanoa (dialogue) going, in pushing back tendencies to wedge the theologies in and of Pasifika, and in putting native wisdom upon the waters. As these Christian and native theologies voyage, they chart Pasifika’s sea of theologies.
Book Synopsis Catch the Bird but Watch the Wave by : Fatilua Fatilua
Download or read book Catch the Bird but Watch the Wave written by Fatilua Fatilua and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contextual biblical reading of Luke 18:18–30 (the encounter between Jesus and the rich ruler) foregrounds the political and economic context of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). The reading carefully explores the biblical text’s context, an exploration that includes looking at specific intertextual sources and engaging scholars from Asian and African contexts. The reading is then applied to a contextual biblical approach to poverty in Samoan society. The contextual biblical reading resituates the ruler in the Lukan narrative within the context of the household and the institutional constraints of its ecological environment. The theoretical framework for the contextual biblical reading is guided by the Samoan proverb seu le manu ae taga’i ile galu (catch the bird and watch the wave), symbolizing responsibility and restraint in biblical interpretation. At the end of the contextual biblical reading, a new way of reading Luke is presented, and three broad propositions are suggested for further consideration. The main argument of this deep contextual reading of the Lukan passage is that the rich ruler offers a different form of “following,” which is possible by “living responsibly with wealth.”
