Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, ELM has emerged as a revolutionary technique of computational intelligence, and has attracted considerable attentions. An extreme learning machine (ELM) is a single layer feed-forward neural network alike learning system, whose connections from the input layer to the hidden layer are randomly generated, while the connections from the hidden layer to the output layer are learned through linear learning methods. The outstanding merits of extreme learning machine (ELM) are its fast learning speed, trivial human intervene and high scalability. This book contains some selected papers from the International Conference on Extreme Learning Machine 2013, which was held in Beijing China, October 15-17, 2013. This conference aims to bring together the researchers and practitioners of extreme learning machine from a variety of fields including artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering and bioinformatics, system modelling and control, and signal and image processing, to promote research and discussions of “learning without iterative tuning". This book covers algorithms and applications of ELM. It gives readers a glance of the newest developments of ELM.

Book excerpt: “Intelligent systems are those which produce intelligent o?springs.” AI researchers have been focusing on developing and employing strong methods that are capable of solving complex real-life problems. The 18th International Conference on Industrial & Engineering Applications of Arti?cial Intelligence & Expert Systems (IEA/AIE 2005) held in Bari, Italy presented such work performed by many scientists worldwide. The Program Committee selected long papers from contributions presenting more complete work and posters from those reporting ongoing research. The Committee enforced the rule that only original and unpublished work could be considered for inclusion in these proceedings. The Program Committee selected 116 contributions from the 271 subm- ted papers which cover the following topics: arti?cial systems, search engines, intelligent interfaces, knowledge discovery, knowledge-based technologies, na- ral language processing, machine learning applications, reasoning technologies, uncertainty management, applied data mining, and technologies for knowledge management. The contributions oriented to the technological aspects of AI and the quality of the papers are witness to a research activity clearly aimed at consolidating the theoretical results that have already been achieved. The c- ference program also included two invited lectures, by Katharina Morik and Roberto Pieraccini. Manypeoplecontributedindi?erentwaystothesuccessoftheconferenceand to this volume. The authors who continue to show their enthusiastic interest in applied intelligence research are a very important part of our success. We highly appreciate the contribution of the members of the Program Committee, as well as others who reviewed all the submitted papers with e?ciency and dedication.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the newly developed Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) including its theories and learning algorithms. ELM is a unified framework of broad type of generalized single-hidden layer feedforward networks. Unlike traditional popular learning methods, ELM requires less human interventions and can run thousands times faster than those conventional methods. ELM automatically determines all the network parameters analytically, which avoids trivial human intervention and makes it efficient in online and real-time applications. The topics covered in this book are as follow: -Conventional learning theories and learning algorithms; -Learning theory of Extreme learning machine; -Basic extreme learning machine; -Incremental extreme learning machine; -Online sequential extreme learning machine; -Applications of extreme learning machine. Source codes for implementing ELM applications in MATLAB will be included for readers to quickly apply the technique. It is suitable as a project-oriented coursework text for graduate students as well as for researchers or system developers to quickly deploy ELM in actual problem-solving.

Book excerpt: This book contains some selected papers from the International Conference on Extreme Learning Machine 2019, which was held in Yangzhou, China, December 14–16, 2019. Extreme Learning Machines (ELMs) aim to enable pervasive learning and pervasive intelligence. As advocated by ELM theories, it is exciting to see the convergence of machine learning and biological learning from the long-term point of view. ELM may be one of the fundamental ‘learning particles’ filling the gaps between machine learning and biological learning (of which activation functions are even unknown). ELM represents a suite of (machine and biological) learning techniques in which hidden neurons need not be tuned: inherited from their ancestors or randomly generated. ELM learning theories show that effective learning algorithms can be derived based on randomly generated hidden neurons (biological neurons, artificial neurons, wavelets, Fourier series, etc) as long as they are nonlinear piecewise continuous, independent of training data and application environments. Increasingly, evidence from neuroscience suggests that similar principles apply in biological learning systems. ELM theories and algorithms argue that “random hidden neurons” capture an essential aspect of biological learning mechanisms as well as the intuitive sense that the efficiency of biological learning need not rely on computing power of neurons. ELM theories thus hint at possible reasons why the brain is more intelligent and effective than current computers. The main theme of ELM2019 is Hierarchical ELM, AI for IoT, Synergy of Machine Learning and Biological Learning. This conference provides a forum for academics, researchers and engineers to share and exchange R&D experience on both theoretical studies and practical applications of the ELM technique and brain learning. This book covers theories, algorithms and applications of ELM. It gives readers a glance of the most recent advances of ELM.

Book excerpt: This book presents recent research in intelligent and fuzzy techniques on digital transformation and the new normal, the state to which economies, societies, etc. settle following a crisis bringing us to a new environment. Digital transformation and the new normal-appearing in many areas such as digital economy, digital finance, digital government, digital health, and digital education are the main scope of this book. The readers can benefit from this book for preparing for a digital “new normal” and maintaining a leadership position among competitors in both manufacturing and service companies. Digitizing an industrial company is a challenging process, which involves rethinking established structures, processes, and steering mechanisms presented in this book. The intended readers are intelligent and fuzzy systems researchers, lecturers, M.Sc., and Ph.D. students studying digital transformation and new normal. The book covers fuzzy logic theory and applications, heuristics, and metaheuristics from optimization to machine learning, from quality management to risk management, making the book an excellent source for researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive filtering still receives attention in engineering as the use of the adaptive filter provides improved performance over the use of a fixed filter under the time-varying and unknown statistics environments. This application evolved communications, signal processing, seismology, mechanical design, and control engineering. The most popular optimization criterion in adaptive filtering is the well-known minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion, which is, however, only optimal when the signals involved are Gaussian-distributed. Therefore, many "optimal solutions" under MMSE are not optimal. As an extension of the traditional MMSE, the minimum mean p-power error (MMPE) criterion has shown superior performance in many applications of adaptive filtering. This book aims to provide a comprehensive introduction of the MMPE and related adaptive filtering algorithms, which will become an important reference for researchers and practitioners in this application area. The book is geared to senior undergraduates with a basic understanding of linear algebra and statistics, graduate students, or practitioners with experience in adaptive signal processing. Key Features: Provides a systematic description of the MMPE criterion. Many adaptive filtering algorithms under MMPE, including linear and nonlinear filters, will be introduced. Extensive illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the results.
