He was the intimate companion of my youth. Being about the same age, and leaving the same views, we contracted a mutual friendship, which continued unbroken and unabated from the 14th year of our ages to the period of his death. The Diary I obtained from his family. In reading it, I felt no common interest: indeed I might blush deeply in perusing the authentic documents of the eminent religious attainments of my dear friend. From my earliest acquaintance with him, I could not but esteem Mr. Shirreff truly pious; but his attainments in true Christianity, as exhibited in these papers, have amazed me. Such knowledge of his own heart, such Christian confidence, deep humility, true resignation, devotedness to God and his cause, are truly admirable, I hope these papers of Mr. and Mrs. Shirreff will, under a divine blessing, be useful to many, both ministers and private Christians. It is pleasant to find so much eminent Christianity among us, and to see that there are still some who are indeed the epistles of Christ, seen and read of all men.
