Book Synopsis The Extracellular Matrix: an Overview by : Robert Mecham
Download or read book The Extracellular Matrix: an Overview written by Robert Mecham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-16 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is essential to understand cellular differentiation, tissue development, and tissue remodeling. This volume of the series “Biology of Extracellular Matrix” provides a timely overview of the structure, regulation, and function of the major macromolecules that make up the extracellular matrix. It covers topics such as collagen types and assembly of collagen-containing suprastructures, basement membrane, fibronectin and other cell-adhesive glycoproteins, proteoglycans, microfibrils, elastin, fibulins and matricellular proteins, such as thrombospondin. It also explores the concept that ECM components together with their cell surface receptors can be viewed as intricate nano-devices that allow cells to physically organize their 3-D-environment. Further, the role of the ECM in human disease and pathogenesis is discussed as well as the use of model organisms in elucidating ECM function.
Book Synopsis Composition and Function of the Extracellular Matrix in the Human Body by : Francesco Travascio
Download or read book Composition and Function of the Extracellular Matrix in the Human Body written by Francesco Travascio and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extracellular matrix (ECM) is an ensemble of non-cellular components present within all tissues and organs of the human body. The ECM provides structural support for scaffolding cellular constituents and biochemical and biomechanical support for those events leading to tissue morphogenesis, differentiation and homeostasis. Essential components of all ECMs are water, proteins and polysaccharides. However, their composition, architecture and bioactivity greatly vary from tissue to tissue in relation to the specific role the ECM is required to assume. This book overviews the role of the ECM in different tissues and organs of the human body.

Download or read book The Endothelium written by Michel Félétou and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endothelium, a monolayer of endothelial cells, constitutes the inner cellular lining of the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and the lymphatic system, and therefore is in direct contact with the blood/lymph and the circulating cells. The endothelium is a major player in the control of blood fluidity, platelet aggregation and vascular tone, a major actor in the regulation of immunology, inflammation and angiogenesis, and an important metabolizing and an endocrine organ. Endothelial cells controls vascular tone, and thereby blood flow, by synthesizing and releasing relaxing and contracting factors such as nitric oxide, metabolites of arachidonic acid via the cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases and cytochrome P450 pathways, various peptides (endothelin, urotensin, CNP, adrenomedullin, etc.), adenosine, purines, reactive oxygen species and so on. Additionally, endothelial ectoenzymes are required steps in the generation of vasoactive hormones such as angiotensin II. An endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or the release of these various endothelial factors may explain the initiation of cardiovascular pathologies (from hypertension to atherosclerosis) or their development and perpetuation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Multiple Functions of the Endothelial Cells / Calcium Signaling in Vascular Cells and Cell-to-Cell Communications / Endothelium-Dependent Regulation of Vascular Tone / Conclusion / References

Book Synopsis Cell Biology of Extracellular Matrix by : E.D. Hay
Download or read book Cell Biology of Extracellular Matrix written by E.D. Hay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ten-year interval since the first edition of this volume went to press, our knowledge of extracellular matrix (ECM) function and structure has enor mously increased. Extracellular matrix and cell-matrix interaction are now routine topics in the meetings and annual reviews sponsored by cell biology societies. Research in molecular biology has so advanced the number of known matrix molecules and the topic of gene structure and regulation that we won dered how best to incorporate the new material. For example, we deliberated over the inclusion of chapters on molecular genetics. We decided that with judicious editing we could present the recent findings in molecular biology within the same cell biology framework that was used for the first edition, using three broad headings: what is extracellular matrix, how is it made, and what does it do for cells? Maintaining control over the review of literature on the subject of ECM was not always an easy task, but we felt it was essential to production of a highly readable volume, one compact enough to serve the the student as an introduction and the investigator as a quick update on graduate the important recent discoveries. The first edition of this volume enjoyed con hope the reader finds this edition equally useful. siderable success; we D. Hay Elizabeth vii Contents Introductory Remarks 1 Elizabeth D. Hay PART I. Book Synopsis Research Focus on Natural Products and the Body's Immune and Inflammatory Systems by : Kyoungho Suk
Download or read book Research Focus on Natural Products and the Body's Immune and Inflammatory Systems written by Kyoungho Suk and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definition of 'natural' is 'produced or existing in nature.' Natural products refer to as any natural constituents, natural substances, or a group of the secondary metabolites that derive from plants, insects, marine plants and animals through their own metabolic pathways. Natural products are usually of high value and small quantity, and they have a variety of biological activities. Extensive research has been performed to understand the effects of natural products on the immune and inflammatory systems. However, the results have been published individually focusing on a particular aspect of immunity or inflammation. The readers in this field may benefit from a comprehensive review book that describes different aspects of immune/inflammatory responses together. This book provides an overview of how a variety of naturally occurring compounds may influence the body's immune and inflammatory systems with an emphasis on the actions of medicinal herbs. In this book, experts in each field present their recent data on the mechanisms by which natural products influence the immune and inflammatory responses. The experimental results that are described in this book are based on various in vitro as well as in vivo model systems. It is also discussed how such effects of natural products are related with their therapeutic applications for the treatment of immune and inflammatory diseases.
