Interestingly, early developments started with external tendons, but failed to be recognized as a major construction technique for two main reasons: - Low tensile performance of early steels in combination with a poor knowledge of concrete creep and shrinkage properties, - Lack of a durable corrosion protection. With the technological progress, external tendons became increasingly popular in the 1980’s, as a post-tensioning method enabling inspection and, if necessary, replacement of tendons without demolition of structural members. Towards the end of the last century, more than 50 bridges have been built with external tendons, first in France and soon gaining traction in other countries. FIP published a state-of the-art report in May 1996 to provide a review of the application of external tendons, describing specific material problems and methods for dealing with them. 25 years have passed and, while the engineering principles covered by the FIP report remain unchanged, the context has evolved: - External tendons and construction methods have kept evolving with better materials, ever longer spans, and tighter schedules. - Normalization frame in Europe changed, Severe durability issues have occurred in some countries from which the industry can extract good knowledge of the causes and how to avoid similar problems in the future. This new fib bulletin has been prepared with the aim to reflect the current state of the art and encompass the knowledge amassed in the last quarter of century with chapters covering from the design and approval of systems and materials to installation, quality control and monitoring. The last chapter is a compilation of structures worldwide covering all sorts of materials, typologies and construction methods, which might be a source of inspiration for owners and designers alike.

Book excerpt: Bridges with external post-tensioned tendons are considered to be more durable than bridges with internal tendons (tendons within the webs and flanges), because external tendons are easier to inspect. In addition, in the event that extensive corrosion damage is detected, it is possible to replace an external tendon. However, an appropriate inspection for detecting damage needs to be determined for external tendons. This investigation focuses on the vibration technique, which uses the dynamic properties of the external tendon to infer the effective prestress force. Four large-scale external tendons, designed to simulate one section of an external tendon between two deviators in a post-tensioned bridge, were tested. In the study, damage to the tendons was induced in a quantifiable fashion at a specific location and the tensile force was measured directly. In addition, free-vibration tests were conducted periodically. This provided a direct means of measuring the sensitivity of measured natural frequencies and measured tensile force to local damage. The measured data were correlated with an approximation of the stiff string vibration model. In addition to the laboratory specimens, field testing was conducted on a bridge with external post-tensioned tendons. The findings from the study show that a loss in tensile force was not linear with a loss in the cross-sectional area of the strand, which results from stress redistribution within the tendon. Also, the natural frequencies were much less sensitive to the level of induced damage than the tensile force. While the measured data from the laboratory data compared very well with the analytical model, the field measurements exhibited a much greater deviation from the model. Due to several factors, the difference between the laboratory specimens and the bridge tendons are believed to be caused by larger levels of inherent error in the model. The findings from the investigation support the notion that vibration testing is most appropriately used in comparing relative differences between peer tendons.

Book excerpt: In some countries durability problems with post-tensioning tendons have in the past led to fairly restrictive regulations. Improvements to execution procedures have been developed since, and new or improved prestressing systems have been proposed, too. This development was, of course, subject of discussions in fib Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Sytems and in IABSE Working Commission 3 Concrete Structures. It was decided to organise a workshop with the aim to review the different aspects of the problems encountered and to discuss solutions available today. Keynote speakers from various countries were invited to contribute. Their papers are published in this bulletin, grouped together under the following themes: Inventory and condition (6 papers) Investigation and repair (5 papers) Technical progress (4 papers) Strategies for improvement (6 papers) Supported by the international federation for structural concrete fib, and the international association for bridge and structural engineering IABSE, the workshop took place on 15-16 November 2001 at Ghent University, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research, whose director also chaired the Scientific Committee and edited the bulletin. It needs to be emphasised that in the bulletin invited experts present their individual views. Although not yet discussed in any of the association's working bodies, the highly topical contents of the bulletin is believed to be of general interest to fib's members and to document a starting point for future work in this field. Therefore, the Council of fib agreed to exceptionally publish these papers within fib's series of Bulletins.

Book excerpt: Prestressed Concrete is a very efficient form of construction; it takes advantage of the strength of concrete in compression. Developed mainly over the second part of the 20th century, it has proven to be reliable and durable. However, in the 1990's some cause for concern was discovered, first in the UK and followed by many other countries of the world. It appeared that the grout, an important means of protection of the steel against corrosion for internally ducted tendons, was in some cases inadequate. Major investigations followed including physical intrusive examination of ducts, mainly in bridges, and re-writing of procedures, processes and specifications, and in 1998 FIP launched a Task Group to review their advice note "Guidelines for Grouting" which had first been published in 1990. The merger of FIP and CEB in 1998 brought this under the auspices of fib. Structural deficiencies have only been found in a small number of bridges and in most of these cases the cause is clearly identifiable as either design detailing, workmanship or materials. In the UK, the Concrete Society report TR47 "Durable Post-tensioned Concrete Bridges" had been published in 1996, which was the culmination of four years of investigative research, and contained major new specifications and procedures aimed at improving the quality of grouting. In the USA, the Post Tensioning Institute published in 2001 their guide "Specification for Grouting of Post-Tensioned Structures", which also represented major steps forward in materials and testing requirements. The American Segmental Bridge Institute has set up a Committee to re-examine their guidelines, as have many other National Bodies worldwide. In Europe, France has issued a "Fascicule No. 65A" covering requirements for grouting and there are many developments in hand in other countries. Also in Europe, a European Technical Approval Guideline (ETAG) has been published for approval of post-tensioning systems which covers several aspects of grout and grouting. In November 2001 an international workshop was held in Ghent, Belgium on "Durability of Post-Tensioning Tendons" [see fib Bulletin 15] at which international experience was exchanged. The theme was clearly apparent; those bridge owners that have looked, have found some problems with a few of their post-tensioned bridges. In most cases steps are being taken to repair existing bridges, where considered necessary, and to improve future construction by reviewing national specifications. Emphasis is being put on a multi-layer protection strategy whereby protection against corrosion is provided by waterproofing, dense impermeable concrete, sealed ducts and good quality grout. Design detailing and rain water management are seen as important aspects. It was, therefore, timely for fib to publish state-of-the-art guidelines to assist in developing and improving the quality of a major line of defence against corrosion, the cement grout. This document represents a consensus view of current practitioners of what is a rapidly developing awareness of some of the shortcomings of previous practice and suggests improvements. This document is a major update of the previous FIP Guidelines and may be taken as a future basis for updating EN 445-447. New areas include understanding of the deleterious effects of an unstable grout, bleeding and how to avoid it, the importance of training and proper procedures, mix design and testing/trials and some new test procedures. It is now understood and generally accepted that the properties of common grout made from cement and water can be very variable and sometimes unpredictable and such grout is not recommended.

Book excerpt: Addressed to designers and even more so to owners and project managers, this part is meant as a guide to an efficient selection of designers and contractors, and to the preparation of fair contracts providing high quality at reasonable cost. Clearly, a good design must be paid for at its real cost; economising on the design cost can be extremely counterproductive for the owner when considering the final whole-life cost of the project. In addition, it was considered very important to address the designer’s responsibilities and relations with other participants in large projects, and finally design philosophy itself. Part 2 – Design and construction aspects This more technical part is mainly addressed to bridge designers and devoted to a systematic analysis of structural and constructional bridge concepts. Considering the importance of erection techniques in the development of bridge design, this second part of the guide starts by a description of the different construction methods, their advantages and draw-backs, their particularities and, of course, by defining the domain of their most efficient applications. Another main chapter is devoted to the proper design of cross-sections. And finally, a third main chapter deals in detail with the influence of construction techniques on design.

Book excerpt: Post-tensioning tendons in segmental bridge construction are often only anchored within the deviator and pier segments. The effectiveness of the post-tensioning (PT) system is therefore dependent on proper functioning of the anchorages. This paper presents the results of a full-scale experimental investigation on anchorage tendon pullout. The study focuses on the length required to develop the in-service PT force within the pier segment grouted steel tube assembly. Seven, twelve, and nineteen 0.6 inch diameter strand tendons with various development lengths were considered. Recommendations for pier section pipe detailing and design will be discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent findings regarding corrosion of post-tensioned bridges have highlighted the urgent need to develop reliable methods to predict the behavior of the structural system after damage has occurred and inspection techniques to assess the condition of the structure. Corrosion in strands is undesirable in that it often progresses without visual signs of distress, but may cause a brittle failure. To complicate the inspection, access to the strands for visual inspection is usually blocked by the concrete cross section. To date, significant efforts have been taken to improve the durability of the post-tensioned bridges. However, the behavior of the post-tensioned bridges with corrosion damage is not clearly understood and the currently available inspection techniques tend to provide only limited information about the nature and extent of the damage. The research project discussed in this dissertation was developed is to evaluate the feasibility of using the vibration technique to detect and estimate the extent of damage in an external tendon due to corrosion. To accomplish this goal, damage was induced in five specimens, which were monitored periodically to correlate the measured changes in the frequency response to the level of damage. The induced damage simulated the degradation of a post-tensioned structure from corrosion. This dissertation describes the experimental program and the numerical scheme used to estimate the condition of the specimens. Three types of specimens were tested during the experimental phase of the research: individual strands, cables specimens, and external tendons. A series of tension tests of individual strands were conducted to investigate changes in the uniaxial behavior after damage was induced. Simulated damage included uniform corrosion of the strand, mechanical wire cuts, and an initial defect in one wire. Three cable specimens and one tendon specimen were subjected to fatigue loading. The loading was selected to simulate the loss of cross-sectional area in the strands, and also caused grout damage. The frequency response of the specimens was recorded periodically during the fatigue tests and acoustic sensors were used to detect the occurrence of wire breaks. A second tendon specimen was exposed to an acid solution to simulate the hydrogen induced cracking in the strand at three different locations along the length of the specimen. A number of wires fractured during the exposure test and damage was inspected visually. Natural frequencies were also measured periodically. The residual prestressing force in of the specimens was extracted from the measured natural frequencies. The stiff string model was used to determine optimum values of tension and flexural stiffness from the frequency response. The numerical results from this optimization demonstrated the feasibility of using the vibration technique as a nondestructive testing method for external tendons.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: This dissertation is an investigation into the behaviour of externally prestressed structures, focusing on bridge box girders, at the ultimate limit state. The main objective is the ductility and the tendon stress increase up to failure of externally prestressed structures. Their behaviour will be compared to internally prestressed structures. The dissertation may have valuable information for the first stages of the design process for medium span bridges as the study is concerned about the overall safety and efficiency of prestressed concrete bridges by the means of ductility. The aim is also to provide information about the tendon stress at failure, which is required for the detailed design.
