Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The External Economic Dimensions of the European Union focuses on the broad range of recent initiatives taken by the EU to reinforce its common external economic policy in a rapidly changing environment. The prospects of the EU are increasingly interrelated with the dynamics of the world economy. In the multipolar post-Cold War economy, the EU faces many uncertainties and new challenges. The transatlantic link still dominates the EU's external relations but the cohesion of the Euro-American relatioship has been tested severely. Moreover, the transition of Central and Eastern Europe and the rise of new growth poles in Asia and Latin America have not only creates new opportunities for trade and investment but intensified international competition at the same time. The volume is organised in two parts. Part I focuses on the competitiveness of the EU and its position in the world economy as well as on specific aspects of its external economic policies including the restructuring of the Common Agricultural Policy and the enlargement of the EU membership. Part II is exclusively devoted to the regional dimension of the external policy of the EU and focuses on the rapidly evolving relationship with the other Triad powers, the USA and Japan, the neighbouring countries and the emerging markets. The book brings together a range of distinguished authors who analyse the wide range of initiatives from the perspective of economics, political science and law. It is a timely and essential work that will reward the attention of policymakers and interested academics throughout the world.

Book Synopsis The European Union by : James A Caporaso
Download or read book The European Union written by James A Caporaso and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union: Dilemmas of Regional Integration is a readable, informative volume for students and instructors of introductory and intermediate courses in international relations and comparative politics. Since the daily activities of the European Union cut across the comparative/IR distinction, the book will prove useful in both courses.Caporaso begins with a detailed chapter that provides readers with important information about the institutions and history of the European Union. In subsequent chapters he examines dilemmas such as the conflict between national sovereignty and the development of regional social policies, the external impact of the European Union (is it open or close, a force for peace or a source of conflict?), and conflicts between democratic openness and accountability on the one hand and expert decisionmaking on the other. Caporaso develops the implications of these dilemmas by place them within broader debates in comparative and international politics. It was named a Choice Outstanding Academic Book of 2001.
Book Synopsis The EU in the Global Political Economy by : Finn Laursen
Download or read book The EU in the Global Political Economy written by Finn Laursen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU has become an important international actor. Its internal policies often have repercussions far beyond its borders. It is also increasingly becoming a proactive global actor, defending its interests and projecting its norms and values in both bilateral and multilateral external relations. This volume has a special focus on external economic relations and includes chapters on the Euro, trade policy, and competition policy as well as on specific bilateral relationships. The section on relations with industrialized countries deals with the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan and China, while the section on relations with developing countries has chapters on administrative reform, environmental cooperation, Cuba, Central America and Iran. The book thus gives an up-to-date overview of important aspects of the EU's external relations. With a focus on political economy, it traces the continuous interplay of economics and politics that has characterized the EU's development of a fully-fledged foreign policy. What emerges is a picture of a European Union that is better equipped institutionally to deal with economic, rather than political issues.

Book Synopsis For Another Europe by : Guglielmo Carchedi
Download or read book For Another Europe written by Guglielmo Carchedi and published by Verso. This book was released on 2001 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative work, Guglielmo Carchedi argues that only an analysis centered on class as the basic unit of social life, with production and distribution of value understood as the bedrock of the economy, can throw light on the internal contradictions of European economic integration. Two specific themes emerge from this radical approach. First, familiar topics such as competition and social policy, economic and monetary union, the Common Agricultural Policy and immigration, are treated in an original manner. Second, subjects usually ignored in the standard textbooks, for instance the role of interest groups in the Union's decision-making process, are shown to be of crucial importance in understanding the economics of the European Union. This work therefore provides both an introduction to and a critique of the European project. The book's central message however, is that another sort of Europe is possible, one based on the erosion of economic polarization, on the abolition of Europe's imperialist relations with the Third World, and on the creation of truly democratic institutions of self-determination.

Book Synopsis Chinese Economic Statecraft from 1978 to 1989 by : Priscilla Roberts
Download or read book Chinese Economic Statecraft from 1978 to 1989 written by Priscilla Roberts and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on Chinese economic statecraft during the first decade of Deng Xiaoping’s reform and opening-up policies, from 1978 to 1989. During these years, Chinese economic engagement with the external world was tentative and experimental, with long-term strategies still decidedly under development. Prominent topics covered are China’s efforts to steer an economic course tailored to and representing what Deng Xiaoping famously described as “socialism with Chinese characteristics”; China’s quest for advanced science and technology; China’s dealings with international economic institutions, especially the World Bank; China’s engagement with other powers, including Japan, the United States, the ASEAN nations, and Europe; and the role of non-governmental organizations, including foreign policy think tanks, exchange groups, and educational institutions, in developing Chinese economic thinking and methodology during this decade. Contributors also focus on how elements of the Chinese military turned to building China’s new economic infrastructure, and on Chinese efforts to break into foreign markets. The volume ends with an overview and reassessment of earlier findings on Chinese economic statecraft in these years, by one of the leading Chinese experts on the PRC’s international policy.

Book Synopsis Europe-Asia Interregional Relations by : Bart Gaens
Download or read book Europe-Asia Interregional Relations written by Bart Gaens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the interregional relations of the European Union with East Asia through the prism of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). ASEM currently brings together 16 Asian countries, the 27 member states of the European Union, as well as the ASEAN Secretariat and the European Commission. ASEM's ten-year anniversary and the Sixth Summit in Helsinki prompted reflection on the forum's accomplishments in three dimensions of interaction, its working methods, democratic involvement, public awareness and global strategic potential. The volume provides an in-depth evaluation of ASEM's first decade from a European perspective, including the achievements of the ASEM6 Summit and its implications for the future of the process. It also analyzes the role of interregional interaction as a tool for EU foreign policy.
