Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By presenting the basics of building science along with a prescribed set of details, Designing the Exterior Wall helps you understand why buildings fail and how they can be made more durable through design. Author Linda Brock connects the science and aesthetics of building envelopes through the examination of a variety of construction and cladding types. She features details from real world projects in a variety of climates, successful and unsuccessful case studies, and checklists you can use on your own projects. Helps you reduce your liability by showing why building envelopes fail and how they can be designed to endure. Moves from theory to actual construction by including hundreds of building envelope details from a broad array of projects and climates. Integrates numerous contemporary case studies, including Frank Gehry's Experiential Music Center in Seattle (thin skins), Renzo Piano's Rue de Meaux housing in Paris (terra cotta cladding), and Mario Botta's San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (prefabricated brick panels). Designing the Exterior Wall is a must-have book, whether you're an architect or a student. Order your copy today.

The report summarizes the results ofthese projects and recommends an approach to a demonstrationproject using improved construction methods in Alberta. Thesedemonstration houses were constructed using alternative buildingsystems such as a painted gypsum board air barrier/vapourretarder concept and alternative mechanical systems whichincluded heating, air supply (ventilation and make-up air), andheat recovery. The report addresses this work in terms ofperformance, code requirements and estimated costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-applied air-barrier/water-resistive-barrier membranes for use in exterior wall systems are relatively new products and are increasingly being specified and used by designers and building owners. These membranes can serve as the primary air barrier and water-resistive barrier, as well as the vapor retarder depending on the vapor permeance of the membrane. The integrity and continuity of this membrane is essential, given that this single material may perform up to three critical functions and will govern the performance of the wall system in terms of moisture migration and waterproofing. The lack of widely accepted industry standards of material property performance for these products makes it difficult for designers to compare products from different manufacturers. Further, because these products are relatively new, their long-term performance is not well established. As such, durability testing of these membranes is important to help designers and building owners anticipate long-term performance prior to specifying these products on projects. This article compares material properties and durability of 14 fluid-applied air barriers, both vapor-permeable and -impermeable products, as determined by laboratory testing. Properties tested include adhesion to common substrates, elongation, and water absorption. The laboratory testing program also addresses the durability of the membranes by testing the effect of freezing temperatures, exposure to water and UV radiation, and aging on the material properties noted above. This article discusses the development of the laboratory testing program, outlines methods of testing and accelerated weathering, and summarizes the test results.

Book excerpt: Pretty Good House provides a framework and set of guidelines for building or renovating a high-performance home that focus on its inhabitants and the environment--but keeps in mind that few people have pockets deep enough to achieve a "perfect" solution. The essential idea is for homeowners to work within their financial and practical constraints both to meet their own needs and do as much for the planet as possible. A Pretty Good House is: * A house that's as small as possible * Simple and durable, but also well designed * Insulated and air-sealed * Above all, it is affordable, healthy, responsible, and resilient.

Book excerpt: The construction industry is bombarded with ever-changing building materials—components of which are more and more difficult, if not impossible, to identify. Building material emissions have been implicated as a major source of indoor air pollution, and toxic gases, often unidentified, are generated in building fires. Building Materials: Product Emission and Combustion Health Hazards undertakes the task of identifying building materials emission and combustion health hazards. This practical guide introduces the complex world of polymers commonly used in building materials along with plasticizers and additives that are not regulated by OSHA. It also explores the topic of building materials as they relate to function and their emissions/combustion products along with thermal decomposition and combustion products as they relate to fire first responders. Engaging environmental professionals, construction management firms, architects, first respondents, and students, this valuable reference delivers a comprehensive spectrum of knowledge needed to face the challenges of managing building materials in the twenty-first century. Awareness is the first line of defense!

Book excerpt: In the climate-controlled buildings of today, moisture problemsaffect not only the useable life expectancy of the structure, butthe comfort and health of the occupants. This reference is thefirst to apply up-to-date moisture control and treatment techniquesin a problem/solution format. Opening with an introductoryexplanation of the nature and causes of mold, mildew, andcondensation, the book gives specific advice on heated, cooled, andcombination environments, plus a short course in the dynamics ofmoisture movement within buildings. Other invaluable coverageincludes: * clear, detailed recommended practices for all United Statesclimates * practices for cooling as well as heating climates (often, heatingclimate solutions are applied in cooling climates, where problemsand solutions are completely different) * an overall, systematic view of moisture problems--including howmechanical systems and occupant lifestyles can create and alsoresolve moisture problems * actual case studies of buildings with moisture problems thatillustrate the principles and practices presented in the book This detailed, no-nonsense exploration of moisture cause andeffect--as well as its protection and remediation--will expandreaders' knowledge on this crucial subject. Moisture ControlHandbook will be welcomed by building contractors, architects, mechanical engineers, building science researchers, buildingproduct manufacturers, homeowners, and small commercial buildingowners.

Book excerpt: high Performance Enclosures : Design Guide for Institutional, Commercial and Industrial Buildings in Cold Climates provides guidance for architects and building enclosure engineers working to meet the growing need for buildings that have significantly lower operational energy consumption. John Straube addresses a range of practical questions about low energy building enclosures that save energy while simultaneously improving durability, comfort, and rain control: How much of an impact can the enclosure, massing, and orientation have? How much glazing is appropriate and what options are available? How much does thermal bridging matter and how can it be minimized at difficult structural details? How does one detail thick layers of continuous insulation outside of steel stud walls? Can layers of insulating sheathing reduce the risk of moisture damage?--COVER.

Book excerpt: Prepared in cooperation with Disney Development Company, this book deals exclusively with aspects of the design, construction or operation of buildings for which even relatively minor errors can have devastating results when the building is located in a hot, humid climate. Disney's consistent adherence to the principles outlined in this manual has dramatically reduced problems in its new construction. The information presented combines the experience of CH2M Hill, the largest environmental engineering firm in the U.S., and Disney, one of the premier facility planning and management firms in the world. Key issues covered include indoor air quality problem factors; hot humid climate considerations; new building failure; and a model for future success. Specifically addressed are schematic design, design development, final design, construction, and post-construction startup and system commissioning. The concepts and approaches presented are those which have proven successful in designing and operating problem-free indoor building environments in hot and humid locations.
