Book excerpt: The Chronicle of Discovery and Conquest of Guinea in two volumes is a historical source which is considered the main authority for the early Portuguese voyages of discovery down the African coast and in the ocean, more especially for those undertaken under the auspices of Prince Henry the Navigator. The work is written by Portuguese chronicler Zurara and is serves as the principal historical source for modern conception of Prince Henry the Navigator and the Henrican age of Portuguese discoveries (although Zurara only covers part of it, the period 1434-1448). Zurara's chronicle is openly hagiographic of the prince and reliant on his recollections. It contains some account of the life work of that prince, and has a biographical as a geographical interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are home to over fifty percent of the world's population, a figure which is expected to increase enormously by 2050. Despite the growing demand on urban resources and infrastructure, food is still often overlooked as a key factor in planning and designing cities. Without incorporating food into the design process – how it is grown, transported, and bought, cooked, eaten and disposed of – it is impossible to create truly resilient and convivial urbanism. Moving from the table and home garden to the town, city, and suburbs, Food and Urbanism explores the connections between food and place in past and present design practices. The book also looks to future methods for extending the 'gastronomic' possibilities of urban space. Supported by examples from places across the world, including the UK, Norway, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Romania, Australia and the USA, the book offers insights into how the interplay of physical design and socio-spatial practices centred around food can help to maintain socially rich, productive and sustainable urban space. Susan Parham brings together the latest research from a number of disciplines – urban planning, food studies, sociology, geography, and design – with her own fieldwork on a range of foodscapes to highlight the fundamental role food has to play in shaping the urban future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Concise, Symptom-Based Textbook for Diagnosis and Decision Making in Clinical Practice Over the past twenty years, thousands of physicians have come to depend on Yamada’s Textbook of Gastroenterology. Its encyclopaedic discussion of the basic science underlying gastrointestinal and liver diseases as well as the many diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available to the patients who suffer from them was—and still is—beyond compare. This new textbook, Principles of Clinical Gastroenterology, is designed to inform practitioners on the features of the major clinical disorders in gastroenterology and hepatology from the point of view of the clinician observing signs and symptoms of a patient under care and management. It is a practical guide to diagnosis and decision making in clinical practice and provides a rich source of information on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Covering the full range of examinations in gastroenterology and hepatology, with extremely timely chapters on patients with dyspepsia, eating disorders, jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and on screening, Principles of Clinical Gastroenterology gives you easy access to approaches that a clinician might take to common symptoms and signs presented by patients with such disorders. The chapters include the epidemiology, history, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of the most commonly encountered disorders in gastroenterology and hepatology. This textbook will be an invaluable resource whether you are a gastroenterologist, internist, surgeon, or other clinician who sees patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders. It should be kept close at hand for frequent consultation.

Book excerpt: Spatial econometrics can be defined in a narrow and in a broader sense. In a narrow sense it refers to methods and techniques for the analysis of regression models using data observed within discrete portions of space such as countries or regions. In a broader sense it is inclusive of the models and theoretical instruments of spatial statistics and spatial data analysis to analyze various economic effects such as externalities, interactions, spatial concentration and many others. Indeed, the reference methodology for spatial econometrics lies on the advances in spatial statistics where it is customary to distinguish between different typologies of data that can be encountered in empirical cases and that require different modelling strategies. A first distinction is between continuous spatial data and data observed on a discrete space. Continuous spatial data are very common in many scientific disciplines (such as physics and environmental sciences), but are still not currently considered in the spatial econometrics literature. Discrete spatial data can take the form of points, lines and polygons. Point data refer to the position of the single economic agent observed at an individual level. Lines in space take the form of interactions between two spatial locations such as flows of goods, individuals and information. Finally data observed within polygons can take the form of predefined irregular portions of space, usually administrative partitions such as countries, regions or counties within one country.
