Book excerpt: In 1995, the U.S. banned exports to Iran of most U.S. goods without a Treasury Dept. license. In 2008, the U.S. media, citing U.S. gov¿t. statistics, reported that U.S. firms were exporting numerous goods to Iran. The statistics are maintained by the Census Bureau and are based on data filed by exporters or their agents. The U.S. has also generally banned unlicensed trans-shipments of U.S. goods to Iran via other nations. This report assesses the extent to which: (1) U.S. trade statistics accurately depict exports to Iran; (2) Treasury licenses exports to Iran in accordance with the trade restrictions and provides licensing data to enforcement agencies and Congress; and (3) Iran obtains U.S. military and dual-use goods through trans-shipment. Book excerpt: Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information regarding a Canadian firm's sale of helicopter engine parts, some of which were of U.S. origin, to an Iranian company. GAO found that the Canadian firm: (1) had a $2.8-million helicopter parts contract with the Iranian firm; (2) exported about $624,000 worth of parts to Iran in October 1986, of which 2.7 percent were of U.S. origin; (3) obtained an export permit in accordance with Canadian laws; and (4) suspended further shipments following the disclosure of U.S. arms sales to Iran. GAO also found that the Department of Commerce: (1) believed that the Iranian company ordered the parts for military helicopters; (2) determined that the ordered items were not subject to its export approval under the applicable regulations; (3) had previously considered expanding controls on exports to Iran to cover nonstrategic aircraft parts having a military application, but did not do so until November 1987; and (4) reported that the expanded controls will have a small effect on the U.S. economy and contain no provisions that are likely to raise allied concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores Iran’s industrial and trade policy options for achieving sustainable, export-oriented, and pro-employment growth. The first part of the book discusses Iran’s economic and industrial development performance, as well as strategies for enhancing capabilities, fostering productive transformation, and developing employment that can result in faster and more inclusive economic growth. It also presents a case study on a leading manufacturing subsector—the automotive industry. The book then offers a set of analyses concerning the country’s trade sector, including exchange rate policies, ways to connect to global markets, and accession to the World Trade Organization. In turn, the closing chapters investigate various aspects of Iran’s labor market and offer policy recommendations on the creation of productive jobs. Readers will learn about effective industrial, trade, and employment policies that can complement macroeconomic measures adopted by the government. As such, the book will appeal not only to scholars and policy-makers, but also to international investors seeking to understand various core aspects of Iran’s industrial and employment structures and trade regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iran and a French Empire of Trade examines the understudied topic of Franco-Persian relations in the long eighteenth century to highlight how rising tensions among Eurasian empires and revolutions in the Atlantic world were profoundly intertwined. Conflicts between Persia, Turkey, India and Russia, and European weapons-dealing with these empires occurred against a backdrop of climate change and food insecurities that destabilized markets. Takeda shows how the French state relied on "entrepreneurial imperialism" to extend commercial activities eastwards beyond the Mediterranean during this time, from Louis XIV's reign to Napoleon Bonaparte's First Empire. Organized as a collection of microhistories, her study showcases a colourful set of characters--rogue merchants from Marseille, a gambling house madam, a naturalized Greek-French drogman, and a bi-cultural Genevan-Persian consul, among others--to demonstrate how individuals on the fringes of French society spearheaded projects to foster ties between France and Persia. Considering the Enlightenment as a product of a connected world, Takeda investigates how trans-imperial adventurers, merchants, consuls, and informants negotiated treaties, traded commodities and arms, transferred knowledge, and introduced industrial practices from Asia to Europe. And she shows the surprising ways in which Enlightenment debates about regime changes from the Safavid to Qajar dynasties and Persia's borderland wars shaped French ideas about revolution andpolicies related to empire-building.

This book was released on 2018-04-04 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 10, , course: Thesis, language: English, abstract: China and Iran have had a long history of economic, social, and military cooperation which spans over hundreds of years ago. This kind of cooperation has been preserved up to the present moment in which the relationship between the two countries is more directed to mutual economic benefits. While Iran benefits from military and technological support from China, China obtains oil to fuel its rapidly growing economy since the amount it produces on its own is not sufficient to run the economy. Ultimately, the relationship between the two countries has culminated into an oil cooperation in which China has been entrusted with a majority of oil exploration tenders in Iran especially during the period in which economic sanctions had been issued against Iran. China remained an ally to Iran despite calls from the Western economic giants for the abandonment of bilateral relations with Iran as a punishment for its refusal to abide by the nuclear deal initiated by the United States. As a result, the oil cooperation has deepened mainly because China has been the main partner to Iran in a period during which economic sanctions were hitting hard on the country’s economy. However, the sanctions were recently lifted, allowing Iran to go back to the global oil market. The main aim of this study was to assess the impact the lifting of the sanctions could have on the oil cooperation between Iran and China. The researcher implemented a quantitative approach in which three measures were performed; the value of Iran’s oil-related exports to China prior to and after the lifting of sanctions, the value of Iran’s exports to the entire world prior to and after the lifting of sanctions, and the value of Iran’s exports to China expressed as a percentage of the total value of Iran’s oil-related exports to the world. Findings illustrated that the value of Iran’s oil exports to China indicated a rising trend prior to the lifting of economic sanctions and a falling trend after lifting of the sanctions. On the other hand, Iran’s exports to the entire world illustrated a falling trend prior to the lifting of sanctions and a rising trend after lifting of sanctions. China’s falling trend indicates that bilateral relations between China and Iran are reducing since Iran is focusing more on the global oil market (rising trend for the oil exports to the world).
