Book excerpt: The United Kingdom's export market share has declined steadily for a number of years, both in aggregate and in many industries within the manufacturing sector. A major determinant of demand for an industry's exports is the price of those exports relative to the prices of international competitors. This article shows that UK export prices tend to follow the prices set by foreign competitors quite closely, when expressed in a common currency. So, for many exporters, a dominant depressing influence on market share over the past decade was the significant appreciation of the sterling exchange rate in the late 1990s. But other factors also played a role. In particular, a number of high-tech UK industries have been able to increase their market shares, perhaps reflecting a greater ability to differentiate their products from those of their competitors.

This book was released on 1995-12-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an assessment of competitiveness and external trade performance of the French manufacturing industry during the 1980s and early 1990s. The first part of the paper reviews developments in a broad range of competitiveness indicators. The analysis indicates that the manufacturing sector appears to have maintained its competitive position in recent years. The second part discusses developments in export market shares. The third part estimates a vector error correction model relating the trade ratio to relative unit labor costs, domestic and foreign demand, and nonprice competitiveness. Variance decompositions suggest that fluctuations in price and nonprice competitiveness account for about two-fifths of fluctuations in manufacturing trade flows.

Book Synopsis Overseas Business Costs and Firm Export Performance by : Richard Kneller
Download or read book Overseas Business Costs and Firm Export Performance written by Richard Kneller and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent microeconomic literature on international trade has highlighted the importance of firm characteristics and trade costs for exports. This study provides evidence on one type of those costs, the costs of doing business overseas, from a theoretical and empirical perspective. Controlling for firm- and industry-level covariates, we find that improvements in the business environment of foreign countries lead to an increase in the export intensity of exporters in the UK manufacturing sector and additional export market entry. Further investigation suggests that important determinants of foreign business costs include factors relating to legal structure, property rights, and business regulation.

Download or read book British Manufacturing Investment Overseas (RLE International Business) written by David Shepherd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses the causes of British manufacturing investment overseas, focusing primarily on the period from the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s. During these years there were significant changes in UK direct investment and this book represented the first major analysis of these changes based on detailed case studies of British international firms. The early chapters assess the available statistical evidence and the theories of overseas investment that had hitherto been put forward. The authors emphasize the need for recognizing the dynamic and varied nature of firms and the relevance of their historical development in order to understand business decision-making. Through a detailed consideration of the activities of a large sample of companies, the book explains why they manufacture abroad and assesses the overall consequences for the British economy of its overseas investment.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing productivity in the UK has consistently lagged behind that of our international competitors for twenty years. The events of 11 September 2001 added to the problems of the sector by the significant impact on international trade, affecting manufacturers dependent on export markets. The Committee investigated these two topics. It finds that the events of 11 September reinforced and accelerated a decline in world trade already underway, and although the impact in the short term for sectors such as aerospace and engineering is serious, the long-term effect should not be great. On productivity, the report highlights a consistent shortfall in capital investment relative to international competitors. In addition, the strength of sterling has had an adverse effect on the competitiveness of UK manufacturing, with many firms squeezing margins to remain competitive rather than seeking efficiency savings. The Committee sees scope for government giving priority to the needs of the manufacturing sector
