Book excerpt: It was fall. And on the night of the big frost, Henry and his dog, Laird Angus McAngus, decided that they must explore the wild and untracked mountains near their house. Before winter set in. So the next morning they set out, with flags and banners as any good explorers would, and also rope. "You always need rope when climbing in the mountains - for safety," Henry said. "I expect you to be home before dark," said Henry's father. And off they went. They picked their way through dangerous canyons and up steep cliffs, had their lunch, and then trouble began. It proved to be an exciting afternoon for Henry and Angus, much better than Henry's imagination could have made it.

Book Synopsis Exploring Meinong’s Jungle and Beyond by : Richard Routley
Download or read book Exploring Meinong’s Jungle and Beyond written by Richard Routley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first volume of The Sylvan Jungle, the editors present a scholarly edition of the first chapter, "Exploring Meinong's Jungle," of Richard Routley's 1000-plus page book, Exploring Meinong's Jungle and Beyond. Going against the Quinean orthodoxy, Routley’s aim was to support Meinong’s idea that we can truthfully refer to non-existent and even impossible objects, like Superman, unicorns and the (infamous) round-square cupola on Berkeley College. The tools of non-classical logic at Routley’s disposal enabled him to update Meinong’s project for a new generation. This volume begins with an Introduction from Dominic Hyde, “The ‘Jungle Book’ in Context,” an essay that situates Exploring Meinong’s Jungle and Beyond historically. We provide the original Preface by Routley, followed by Chapter 1: “Exploring Meinong’s Jungle and Beyond.” In Chapter 2, Nicholas Griffin argues that Sylvan’s project was insufficiently radical with his essay, “Why the Original Theory of Items Didn’t (Quite) Go Far Enough.” Sylvan revisits his position from this time in Chapter 3, with his article, “Re-Exploring Item-Theory.” Filippo Casati, who has worked in the Routley Archives then takes up the question of the future of Sylvan’s research program in his essay, “The Future Perfect of Exploring Meinong’s Jungle.” Iconic and iconoclastic Australian philosopher Richard Routley (né Sylvan) published Exploring Meinong’s Jungle and Beyond in 1980. This work has fallen out of print, yet without great fanfare it has influenced two generations of philosophers and logicians.

Book Synopsis Voices from the 'Jungle' by : Africa
Download or read book Voices from the 'Jungle' written by Africa and published by Pluto Press (UK). This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often called the Calais Jungle, the refugee camp in Northern France epitomises for many the suffering, uncertainty, and violence that characterizes the lives of many refugees in Europe today. Migrants from ravaged countries, such as Syria, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Eritrea, arrive by the hundreds every day hoping for sanctuary from their war-torn homelands and a chance to settle in Europe. Going beyond superficial media reports, Voices from the "Jungle" gives voice to the unique individuals living in the camp--people who have made the difficult journey from devastated countries simply looking for peace. In this moving collection of individual testimonies, Calais refugees speak directly in powerful and vivid stories, offering their memories up with stunning honesty. They tell of their childhood dreams and struggles for education; the genocides, wars, and persecution that drove them from home; the simultaneous terror and strength that filled their extraordinary journeys; the realities of living in the Calais refugee camp; and their deepest hopes for the future. Through their stories, these refugees paint a picture of a different kind of Jungle--a powerful sense of community that has grown despite evictions and attacks and a solidarity that crosses national and religious boundaries. Interspersed with photos taken by the camp's inhabitants, taught by award-winning photographers Gideon Mendel and Crispin Hughes, original artwork by inhabitants, and powerful poems, Voices from the "Jungle" must be read by anyone seeking to understand the human consequences of our current world crisis.
