Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences and perceptions of teachers and administrators who work with English language learners (ELLs). English language learners are defined as students whose first, or native, language is something other than English. With ELLs being the fastest-growing student group in American K-12 schools, the number of teachers who have at least one ELL in their classrooms is also increasing (NCES, 2022). The literature indicates that many general education teachers who have ELLs for much of the school day have not received explicit training in specialized instructional pedagogy for ELLs and often feel ill-prepared to teach to the unique and diverse needs of ELLs. This phenomenological case study, which is framed in the theories of self-efficacy and teacher efficacy, used interviews and observations to determine the perceptions and needs of the educators in relation to ELLs. This study also analyzed physical and digital documents to gain a better understanding of the district's policy towards ELLs, as well as the district's English as a Second Language (ESL) program. While students are referred to as ELLs, the instructional English language program in which they are served is referred to as ESL. The findings reveal that while teachers enjoy working with ELLs and feel confident to work with this unique population, they lack background knowledge of second language acquisition and instructional strategies to provide access to the content and curriculum for these linguistically diverse students. The implications for district leaders in policy and practice include the need to provide training not only for classroom teachers, but also for ESL teachers, administrators, and district staff. District staff also need to be aware of the district, state, and federal policy and obligations required of schools to meet on behalf of ELLs. Future research should include studies on the needs of ESL teachers and the needs of ELLs and their families. Additionally, a replication of this study should be conducted in smaller, rural and larger, urban districts with varied demographic populations of ELLs. This would allow districts to explore possible factors that contribute to a teacher's efficacy to teach ELLs.

Book excerpt: With the increasing number of English-language learners in secondary schools, all teachers are required to teach content and language as signalled in the New Zealand Curriculum. To be an effective teacher of English-language learners, the use of content-based teaching practices and instructional strategies is necessary along with a sense of self-efficacy. Higher self-efficacy is more likely to lead to positive behaviour, while lower self-efficacy is more likely to be associated with negative behaviour regarding the use of instructional strategies and teaching practices in the classroom. This sequential, explanatory, mixed-methods design used a survey and interviews to explore how teacher self-efficacy perceptions influenced reported content-based instructional strategies. An additional aim of the study was to find out whether there was a relationship between the extent of professional learning and development, and teacher self-efficacy. While findings indicated that some high and medium self-efficacy teachers embraced content-based instructional strategies, most of which were gained through years of specialised professional learning and development, some medium and low self-efficacy teachers reported fewer instructional strategies and engaged in limited professional learning and development opportunities. The findings also showed that teachers reported differently on instructional strategies according to their self-efficacy perceptions, specialised training and the subject taught.

Book excerpt: A number of capacity-building efforts are designed to assist teachers in meeting the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs), including supplemental certification and the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, or SIOP Model. The purpose of this study was to determine if the method for preparing teachers affects the teacher efficacy of mainstream teachers working with ELLs. Specifically, the study examined the teacher efficacy of teachers working with ELLs with no specific preparation to those who have participated in SIOP Model training and to teachers who have earned supplemental certification. Participants in this study were mainstream teachers in Texas who teach ELLs. The Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale was used as the measure of teacher efficacy. The scale was modified by inserting the descriptor "English language learner" in place of the word "student." One-way analysis of variance was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the scale score variables and method of teacher preparation for serving ELLs. Teachers who reported the highest efficacy mean scores were teachers who had both supplemental certification and had participated in SIOP Model training. Results indicated that there is a significant difference between overall efficacy, efficacy in student engagement, and efficacy in instructional strategies of teachers of ELLs based upon their method of teacher preparation for serving these students for teachers who had supplemental certification and SIOP Model training, for those with SIOP Model training alone, for those with certification alone. In the area of classroom management, results were significant for teachers who were both certified to teach ELLs and SIOP Model trained, and for those with SIOP Model training only. Results were not significant for those with certification alone. The results from the study demonstrated the need for teachers who serve ELLs to earn supplemental certification and to participate in high quality professional development models such as the SIOP Model.
