The presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples, and geometric intuition. The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Exchange Rate Models by : Lucio Sarno
Download or read book Nonlinear Exchange Rate Models written by Lucio Sarno and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a selective overview of nonlinear exchange rate models recently proposed in the literature and assesses their contribution to understanding exchange rate behavior. Two key questions are examined. The first question is whether nonlinear autoregressive models of real exchange rates help resolve the "purchasing power parity (PPP) puzzles." The second question is whether recently developed nonlinear, regime-switching vector equilibrium correction models of the nominal exchange rate can beat a random walk model, the standard benchmark in the exchange rate literature, in terms of out-of-sample forecasting performance. Finally, issues related to the adequateness of standard methods of evaluation of (linear and nonlinear) exchange rate models are discussed with reference to different forecast accuracy criteria.

Download or read book Nonlinearities in Exchange-Rate Dynamics written by Vitaliy Vandrovych and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we conduct a formal testing of the possibility of chaotic dynamics in daily exchange rate variables, namely exchange rate returns, volatility and normalized exchange rates. Substantial nonlinear dependence is found in exchange rate returns, even when GARCH-type structure is accounted for. Application of the tools from dynamical systems theory, such as correlation dimension and largest Lyapunov exponent calculation, strongly rejects the possibility of chaotic dynamics in the data. We show the importance of the Theiler correction to the Grassberger and Procaccia algorithm, omission of which can lead to a wrong conclusion of chaotic dynamics in some variables. Moreover, we suggest the necessity of considering a dynamic noise element in theoretical chaotic asset pricing models.

Book Synopsis Exchange Rate Forecasting: Techniques and Applications by : I. Moosa
Download or read book Exchange Rate Forecasting: Techniques and Applications written by I. Moosa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forecasting exchange rates is a variable that preoccupies economists, businesses and governments, being more critical to more people than any other variable. In Exchange Rate Forecasting the author sets out to provide a concise survey of the techniques of forecasting - bringing together the various forecasting methods and applying them to the exchange rate in a highly accessible and readable manner. Highly practical in approach, the book provides an understanding of the techniques of forecasting with an emphasis on its applications and use in business decision-making, such as hedging, speculation, investment, financing and capital budgeting. In addition, the author also considers recent developments in the field, notably neural networks and chaos, again, with easy-to-understand explanations of these "rocket science" areas. The practical approach to forecasting is also reflected in the number of examples that pepper the text, whilst descriptions of some of the software packages that are used in practice to generate forecasts are also provided.

Book Synopsis Games and Dynamics in Economics by : Ferenc Szidarovszky
Download or read book Games and Dynamics in Economics written by Ferenc Szidarovszky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the latest advances in nonlinear dynamic modeling in economics and finance, mainly—but not solely—based on the description of strategic interaction by using concepts and methods from dynamic and evolutionary game theory. The respective chapters cover a range of theoretical issues and examples concerning how the qualitative theory of dynamical systems is used to analyze the local and global bifurcations that characterize complex behaviors observed in social systems where heterogeneous and boundedly rational economic agents interact. Nonlinear dynamical systems, represented by difference and differential and functional equations, are extensively used to simulate the behavior of time-evolving economic systems, also in the presence of time lags, discontinuities, and hysteresis phenomena. In addition, some theoretical issues and particular applications are discussed, as well. The contributions gathered here offer an up-to-date review of the latest research in this rapidly developing research area.

Download or read book Chaos and Complexity Theory for Management: Nonlinear Dynamics written by Banerjee, Santo and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although chaos theory refers to the existence between seemingly random events, it has been gaining the attention of science, technology and managements fields. The shift from traditional procedures to the dynamics of chaos and complexity theory has resulted in a new element of complexity thinking, allowing for a greater capability for analyzing and understanding key business processes. Chaos and Complexity Theory for Management: Nonlinear Dynamics explores chaos and complexity theory and its relationship with the understanding of natural chaos in the business environment. Utilizing these theories aids in comprehending the development of businesses as a complex adaptive system.
Book Synopsis Chaos and Non-linear Models in Economics by : John Creedy
Download or read book Chaos and Non-linear Models in Economics written by John Creedy and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-linear models are increasingly being applied to phenomena that are otherwise very difficult to model such as financial markets, economic growth, agricultural price cycles, business cycles, diffusion processes and overlapping generation models. Chaos and Non-Linear Models in Economics makes important advances in the theory and application of non-linear modelling accessible to advanced students. The contributions to this volume include both introductory chapters which review the fundamental theoretical and statistical characteristics of non-linear models - and keep the use of mathematics to a minimum - and chapters which introduce more sophisticated techniques.
