Download or read book Natural Language, Computer-Assisted Learning and Language-Impaired Children written by Robert Ward and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-02-13 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a scanned copy of a thesis successfully submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Psychology, University of Hull, U.K. in 1987. We learn language by using it. Interaction with others through language is essential for normal language development. Children with delayed or impaired language may therefore benefit from additional experience of interacting through language in structured situations. This thesis explores how computers might help provide this experience. It reports a project in which programs were developed to hold written dialogues about screen objects, and observed in use by deaf and other language-impaired children. This version is published through www.lulu.com who should be able to supply it at the best price, and from where it can also be downloaded more cheaply in electronic form.

Download or read book Advances in Computer Assisted Learning written by P. R. Smith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Computer Assisted Learning contains selected proceedings from the CAL Symposium on Computer Assisted Learning held at the University of Nottingham in the UK in 1985. This book reviews advances in computer-assisted learning in the areas of curriculum development, visually handicapped and disabled students, project work in schools, television, viewdata and video applications, database applications, and engineering education and training. This monograph has 35 chapters and opens with a discussion on the computing aspects of interactive video, focusing on the design and production of the software used to control the videodisc developed by the Open University in the UK. The next chapter illustrates a variety of case studies whereby local viewdata has been exploited by both teachers and their pupils in different parts of Europe. Attention then turns to the use of computer-assisted communication in the education of the visually impaired; the use of microcomputers in teaching electronics; and theoretical considerations in selecting software for language arts. This text will be of interest to educators and policymakers who want to implement computer technology in the classroom.

Book Synopsis Exploring Corpora for ESP Learning by : Laura Gavioli
Download or read book Exploring Corpora for ESP Learning written by Laura Gavioli and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-21 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the effects of corpus work on the process of foreign language learning in ESP settings. It suggests that observing learners at work with corpus data can stimulate discussion and re-thinking of the pedagogical implications of both the theoretical and empirical aspects of corpus linguistics. The ideas presented here are developed from the Data-Driven Learning approach introduced by Tim Johns in the early nineties. The experience of watching students perform corpus analysis provides the basis for the two main observations in the book: a) corpus work provides students with a useful source of information about ESP language features, b) the process of "search-and-discovery" implied in the method of corpus analysis may facilitate language learning and promote autonomy in learning language use. The discussion is carried out on the basis of a series of corpus-based "explorations" by students and provides suggestions for developing new tasks and tools for language learners.

They include the use of microcomputers, videotex (viewdata), teletext, video and videodiscs. In addition, artificial intelligence, synthetic speech, robots, distance education, language testing as well communicative training and the problem of accuracy and fluency are dealt with.

Download or read book Electronic Dreams written by Tom Lean and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did computers invade the homes and cultural life of 1980s Britain? Remember the ZX Spectrum? Ever have a go at programming with its stretchy rubber keys? How about the BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, or Commodore 64? Did you marvel at the immense galaxies of Elite, master digital kung-fu in Way of the Exploding Fist or lose yourself in the surreal caverns of Manic Miner? For anyone who was a kid in the 1980s, these iconic computer brands are the stuff of legend. In Electronic Dreams, Tom Lean tells the story of how computers invaded British homes for the first time, as people set aside their worries of electronic brains and Big Brother and embraced the wonder-technology of the 1980s. This book charts the history of the rise and fall of the home computer, the family of futuristic and quirky machines that took computing from the realm of science and science fiction to being a user-friendly domestic technology. It is a tale of unexpected consequences, when the machines that parents bought to help their kids with homework ended up giving birth to the video games industry, and of unrealised ambitions, like the ahead-of-its-time Prestel network that first put the British home online but failed to change the world. Ultimately, it's the story of the people who made the boom happen, the inventors and entrepreneurs like Clive Sinclair and Alan Sugar seeking new markets, bedroom programmers and computer hackers, and the millions of everyday folk who bought in to the electronic dream and let the computer into their lives.

Book Synopsis Using Corpora to Learn about Language and Discourse by : Linda Lombardo
Download or read book Using Corpora to Learn about Language and Discourse written by Linda Lombardo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable progress has been made in the use of corpora for research purposes to describe language in use, and more recently, through a CADS (corpus assisted discourse studies) approach, to identify the discourse features of specific text genres. While the potential benefits of working with corpora in the classroom have been recognised, there has been a lag in the promulgation of guidelines for carrying out meaningful corpus work with language learners and teachers in mind. The papers in this volume aim to make a contribution toward filling that gap by providing an in-depth account of innovative corpus work, most of which has actually been carried out with real learners in the classroom. Authors provide valuable insights into ways of structuring corpus work for specific target learners, as well as suggestions for resolving problematic issues that have arisen and avoiding errors that have been made with learners and in their own research and experimentation. The transparency and honesty with which they present their methodology and results, along with the successful techniques they have developed, constitute a step forward in defining good (and bad) practice in the use of corpora in learning.
