Book Synopsis Exploring Colossians:Living the New Reality by : Roy R. Jeal
Download or read book Exploring Colossians:Living the New Reality written by Roy R. Jeal and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2024-11-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive, sociorhetorical interpretation of Colossians, Roy R. Jeal explores the letter’s portrayal of the grand vision that extends from the realm of God before the creation of the cosmos to the new reality and new culture of the life of fullness in Christ. The commentary analyzes the pictures the text evokes in the human visual imagination, identifies the persuasive modes of discourse in the letter, and evaluates the range of textures that interweave to produce the dynamic rhetorical argument of Colossians. Demands to conform to “empty deceitful philosophy, human tradition, and the elements of the world” rather than to Christ are irrelevant for believers who have been transferred from darkness to the light of the Son of God’s kingdom. The rhetoric of the letter moves believers to ideologies of living in the body of Christ where orderly behavior guided by love contrasts with the chaotic, self-indulgent, divisive uncertainties of Mediterranean existence.

Book Synopsis Colossians and Philemon by : Dr Matthew O Sadiku
Download or read book Colossians and Philemon written by Dr Matthew O Sadiku and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every serious student of the Bible desires to understand the text, discover the biblical principles, and apply the truths to his/her life. This commentary is designed to help students, pastors, and Bible teachers understand Colossians and Philemon in a simple manner. Working from the popular New International Version (NIV), the author provides helpful commentary on the text verse-by-verse. This verse-by-verse commentary is different from others in two respects. First, it is brief while some commentaries are unnecessarily wordy and verbose. Second, it is Pentecostal in outlook. This implies that we generally adhere to the doctrine of biblical inerrancy and adopt a literalist approach to the interpretation of the Bible. The major aim of this commentary is to expose readers to Colossians and Philemon, two closely related New Testament letters. Colossians deals with the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the head of all creation and of the church. No book in the Bible presents a more comprehensive picture of the fullness of Christ.

Download or read book Exploring Hebrews written by Ashley Day and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody knows for certain who wrote the letter to the Hebrews. Many scholars (such as Arthur Pink and the early Catholics) believe Paul was the author. Others claim it was written by Timothy or Barnabas. Some even suggest that the writers were Aquila and Priscilla. Still others (such as Martin Luther and R.C. Lenski) believe that Apollos wrote it. But despite the learned theories, which claim to prove the authors identity, none succeeds, and the fact remains that despite two thousand years of scholarship, nobody knows who actually penned these immortal words. Even if we knew the authors identity, the knowledge would not help us very much. It would not change one word of the letter, nor make it more effective. Exploring Hebrews does not waste time following rabbit trails, but instead concentrates on what the letter itself has to say. Every verse is covered and carefully explained. Our goal is to learn, bearing in mind that although God has not revealed the identity of the human author of Hebrews, the letter was clearly written under divine inspiration. All Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16) and The prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost (2 Peter 1:21).

Download or read book Exploring Daniel written by Ashley Day and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Daniel is one of the most important prophetic texts in the Bible. It sets out, more clearly than any other book, God's plan for the ages, thus giving us a road map which enables us to understand future worldwide developments. After the deaths of David and Solomon, the kingdom of Israel split into two parts and rapidly slipped into decline. A succession of godless kings led the people into idolatry and brought them down to humiliation and defeat at the hands of their enemies. By the year 721 BC, the northern ten tribes had disappeared, having been carried off into slavery by the kings of Assyria. The remaining two tribes (Judah and Benjamin) continued for another hundred years but eventually, due to their continued disregard of God's will, they came to a similar fate. Daniel, a young man of high birth, was carried off to Babylon and his book is a graphic account of his incredible experiences there. "Exploring Daniel" examines every verse of Daniel's writing and seeks to explain the meaning and significance of the text. An understanding of the book of Daniel is essential to gaining insight into Bible prophecy in general.
Download or read book Reading Ephesians written by Minna Shkul and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minna Shkul examines how Ephesians engages in social entrepreneurship - the deliberate shaping of emerging Christian Identity through provision of ideological and social paradigms for the fledgling Christian community. Shkul uses social entrepreneurship as an umbrella for a variety of social processes reflected in the text. This eclectic theoretical framework and deutero-Pauline reading position has two key aims. The first is to offer a theoretically informed social-scientific reading which demonstrates the extensive socio-ideological shaping within the text, and displays the writer's negotiation of different group processes throughout the letter. The second is to examine emerging Christian identity in the text, testing its ideological and social contours and its reforms upon Jewish traditions. Crucially this is done without the theological presupposition that something was wrong with the Judaism practised at the time, but rather by focusing upon the divine ‘legitimating' of the Christian group and its culture. These readings of Ephesians examine how the writer engages in a self-enhancing discourse that reinforces basic components of communality. These include the construction of a positive in-group identity and the provision of ideological and social legitimating for the community. Shkul also discusses the textual reflection of communal relations in other groups in Greco-Roman antiquity. She examines how Christ-followers are positioned in a Jewish symbolic universe, which is forced to make room for Christ and his non-Israelite followers. Finally, she explores the attitude toward non-Israelites within Ephesians, and their need for re-socialization.
