Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - Miscellaneous Topics, , language: English, abstract: The present study focuses on the assessment of oral skills during lifelike situations in normal classrooms in Beninese secondary schools. Quantitative data (questionnaire) was collected from 20 EFL teachers from two schools. The results show that teachers felt that it is difficult to assess oral skills, and the most common reason for this was the lack of time, which again was the cause of big class sizes and tight schedule. It also seemed that the assessment they do is not consistent, and that there are a lot of personal differences between teachers, and these differences influence their classrooms massively. When they did find time for assessment, teachers focused mostly on aspects of oral language such as vocabulary and pronunciation.

Book excerpt: I examined Tanzanian secondary EFL teachers' attitudes toward language performance-based assessments (PBA). I asked Tanzanian EFL teachers about PBA's benefits, challenges, and potential solutions to the identified challenges after two rounds of webinars introducing PBA as an alternative assessment approach that promotes classroom interaction, participation, and critical thinking. Together with teachers, we evaluated textbook activities and practiced using PBA tools such as group discussions and rubrics. I collected data through surveys and semi-structured interviews. I utilized group and interpretative coding per Kostere and Kostere's (2021) theoretical coding guide to analyze the data thematically. The findings revealed that teachers perceived PBA as a beneficial assessment practice that can help students improve their English proficiency. The benefits identified included: PBA facilitates feedback, increased exposure to the language, increased confidence to speak the language and to participate in the classroom, and promotes students' motivation. However, PBA implementation was equally challenging for some teachers. The challenges included teachers' lack of time and skills to design materials, a wide competency gap between students, pressure from administrators to teach for tests, and a lack of support from teachers of other subjects. I also suggested ways to overcome Tanzanian EFL classroom PBA challenges. Solutions included making textbook tasks performative, creating a safe and joyful learning environment, and embracing multilingualism to assist students in overcoming their fear of speaking. Overall, the study found that Tanzanian EFL teachers perceive PBA as a beneficial assessment practice that can help students improve their English proficiency. However, I also found certain challenges to PBA in Tanzanian EFL classrooms. Future studies should address these issues and help teachers implement PBA.

Book excerpt: This study aimed at exploring the perceived and the actual written feedback preferences between EFL students and teachers in the UAE. To achieve this aim a convergent parallel mixed-method research design was employed. The quantitative means featured self-report questionnaires for both teachers and students regarding their different types of feedback preferences. Teachers of cycle 3 (n=67) and eleventh grade students (n=116) in public schools participated in this study. Moreover, the qualitative means were collected through interviews which were conducted with teachers (n=23) and students (n=22) who were selected from the initial pool of both samples. Additionally, 28 documents from actual written feedback by teachers were incorporated for in-depth analysis to investigate the actual feedback provided by the teachers. Results of the study revealed that there were more similarities than variations among the teachers and students' feedback preferences. Moreover, there were some variations among teachers' perceived preferences and their actual practices of feedback provision. Furthermore, the students' preferences aligned with their teachers actual practices. Additionally, when the teachers interviewed, the teachers revealed some factors that affect the use of feedback, such as schools' demands and orientations regarding feedback, students' proficiency levels and the nature of tasks and lessons objectives. Students viewed direct correction as viable option for them but it is not necessary needed with easy and simple tasks errors. The study offered some recommendations for teachers, curriculum planning, instruction and research.

Book excerpt: This thesis was concerned with studying the perception of English teachers' toward differentiated assessments in Cycle two at Al Ain public schools. The main purpose of this thesis was to identify the perception of English teachers toward differentiated assessments, recognize the different types of assessments teachers are using in their classrooms and understand how these assessments may inform teaching and learning. A questionnaire had been distributed to Cycle two schools. Also semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers to obtain detailed data. The study investigated the views of teachers about differentiated assessments along with the assessment strategies they implement in their classrooms. In addition, it aimed to study the impact of differentiating assessment on teaching and learning. The study showed that many teachers perceived differentiated assessments as effective tools that could be effectively applied in classrooms. Moreover, they could be used to better manage classrooms, meet students' needs and differentiate students' learning. Examining the perception of teachers helped us understand the knowledge teachers had and what they might apply in their classrooms. That allowed us to know if the learning cycle was continuous or conventional in those classrooms. The collected data from the questionnaire beside the obtained results from the interviews described how teachers perceived differentiated assessments in classrooms. This in return clarified the effectiveness of these assessments.
