Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a depiction of the Aramaic tribes of Mesopotamia; it explores the ancient and modern periods, the civil and religious influences, and the pagan and Christian heritage. For the past five centuries, the name Chaldean has been applied to Aramaic speaking people of Mesopotamia, and was the last term used to indicate Mesopotamian identity. The author was inspired by the presence of over a hundred thousand Chaldeans in the United States to produce this reference. He cites books and articles that deal with the history and culture, ancient and modern periods, the civil and religious influences, and the pagan and Christian heritage. The unannotated entries are arranged first by ancient and modern periods, then by form -- such as English books and non-English journal articles.

This book was released on 1909 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercially available Computer Assisted Instruction programs and their implementation appear to be having an effect on elementary education. The indiscriminate use of these programs may pose a threat to the quality of education some students receive. This exploratory research: (1) examined the effectiveness of CAI programs in the opinion of past and present educational researchers, through a literature review, (2) discussed the structure of the reading strand of one such program currently in use in some Canadian elementary schools; and through a case study involving a 6 week computer program intervention using 6 high, middle, and low achievers from one grade six classroom, (3) reflected on the relevance of this program by measuring: pre- and post-intervention performance on the Gates-MacGinitie standardized Reading Tests. Form D (1965), the Johns Basic Reading Inventory (1994), computer generated program reports and investigator constructed format of instruction attitude questionnaires and self-concept survey. A focus group session documented student perceptions about program use. Findings in this case study indicated mixed results in terms of reading performance gains for high, middle, and low achieving students. Performance seemed to be affected by personal attributes, program characteristics, and scheduling management and resource limitations. It was concluded that, in this case students at all levels benefited to some degree but that attitude had more influence on performance than on the entering achievement level. Students remarked on the need for more social interaction to facilitate learning. More detailed research into the numerous factors that influenced performance is required. Findings suggest that caution is in order in the large scale implementation of computer assisted instruction programs.

Book excerpt: With over 60 years of education reform, including the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) in 1958, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975, and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2002, the achievement gap still existed at the beginning of the 21st century, and the effectiveness of the U.S. public school system continued to be questioned. This study was conducted to examine the effect of the use of a computer-assisted instruction curriculum, Achieve 3000®, among select secondary reading students in a central Florida school district and their implications for student achievement. This study showed significant difference existed in the type of students rather than the reading program. The ANCOVA performed on all students and the ANOVAs performed for exceptional education students, males and females, free/reduced lunch and ethnic subgroups did not show a significant statistical difference in the 2012-2013 reading achievement scores. The Achieve 3000® reading program did not close the achievement gap any more than the non-Achieve 3000® reading program. Conversely, the ANOVA performed for English language learners did show a significant statistical difference between the 2012-2013 reading achievement scores. However, the effect size each question was small indicating the practical implication was also small. Ultimately, this study made a strong argument for the need for further research.
