Book Synopsis Introduction to Analysis in Several Variables: Advanced Calculus by : Michael E. Taylor
Download or read book Introduction to Analysis in Several Variables: Advanced Calculus written by Michael E. Taylor and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text was produced for the second part of a two-part sequence on advanced calculus, whose aim is to provide a firm logical foundation for analysis. The first part treats analysis in one variable, and the text at hand treats analysis in several variables. After a review of topics from one-variable analysis and linear algebra, the text treats in succession multivariable differential calculus, including systems of differential equations, and multivariable integral calculus. It builds on this to develop calculus on surfaces in Euclidean space and also on manifolds. It introduces differential forms and establishes a general Stokes formula. It describes various applications of Stokes formula, from harmonic functions to degree theory. The text then studies the differential geometry of surfaces, including geodesics and curvature, and makes contact with degree theory, via the Gauss–Bonnet theorem. The text also takes up Fourier analysis, and bridges this with results on surfaces, via Fourier analysis on spheres and on compact matrix groups.
Book Synopsis Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers by : Louis Komzsik
Download or read book Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers written by Louis Komzsik and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the calculus of variations is to find optimal solutions to engineering problems whose optimum may be a certain quantity, shape, or function. Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers addresses this important mathematical area applicable to many engineering disciplines. Its unique, application-oriented approach sets it apart from the theoretical treatises of most texts, as it is aimed at enhancing the engineer’s understanding of the topic. This Second Edition text: Contains new chapters discussing analytic solutions of variational problems and Lagrange-Hamilton equations of motion in depth Provides new sections detailing the boundary integral and finite element methods and their calculation techniques Includes enlightening new examples, such as the compression of a beam, the optimal cross section of beam under bending force, the solution of Laplace’s equation, and Poisson’s equation with various methods Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers, Second Edition extends the collection of techniques aiding the engineer in the application of the concepts of the calculus of variations.
Download or read book Human Errors written by Nathan H. Lents and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biology professor’s “funny, fascinating” tour of the physical imperfections—from faulty knees to junk DNA—that make us human (Discover). We humans like to think of ourselves as highly evolved creatures. But if we are supposedly evolution’s greatest creation, why do we have such bad knees? Why do we catch head colds so often—two hundred times more often than a dog does? How come our wrists have so many useless bones? Why is the vast majority of our genetic code pointless? And are we really supposed to swallow and breathe through the same narrow tube? Surely there’s been some kind of mistake? As professor of biology Nathan H. Lents explains in Human Errors, our evolutionary history is indeed nothing if not a litany of mistakes, each more entertaining and enlightening than the last. The human body is one big pile of compromises. But that is also a testament to our greatness: as Lents shows, humans have so many design flaws precisely because we are very, very good at getting around them. A rollicking, deeply informative tour of humans’ four-billion-year-and-counting evolutionary saga, Human Errors both celebrates our imperfections and offers an unconventional accounting of the cost of our success. “An insightful and entertaining romp through the myriad ways in which the human body falls short of an engineering ideal—and the often-surprising reasons why.” —Ian Tattersall, author of The Monkey in the Mirror
