Book excerpt: Students become mathematical adventurers in these challenging and engaging activities designed to deepen and extend their understanding of concepts from the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. The investigations in this book stretch students' mathematical imaginations to their limits as they investigate the numeration systems of creatures from another planet, create and solve stories and problems with extreme numbers, use place value to design their own new divisibility strategies, and play with a strange kind of number line specially designed to multiply numbers without a calculator. Each activity comes with detailed support for classroom implementation including learning goals, discussion guides, detailed solutions, and suggestions for extending the investigation. There is also a free supplemental e-book offering strategies for motivation, assessment, parent communication, and suggestions for using the materials in different learning environments. Grades 5-8

Download or read book Symmetry written by Kristopher Tapp and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-28 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is perfect for a math course for non-math majors, with the goal of encouraging effective analytical thinking and exposing students to elegant mathematical ideas. It includes many topics commonly found in sampler courses, like Platonic solids, Euler’s formula, irrational numbers, countable sets, permutations, and a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. All of these topics serve a single compelling goal: understanding the mathematical patterns underlying the symmetry that we observe in the physical world around us. The exposition is engaging, precise and rigorous. The theorems are visually motivated with intuitive proofs appropriate for the intended audience. Students from all majors will enjoy the many beautiful topics herein, and will come to better appreciate the powerful cumulative nature of mathematics as these topics are woven together into a single fascinating story about the ways in which objects can be symmetric.

Book Synopsis Explorations in Mathematical Physics by : Don Koks
Download or read book Explorations in Mathematical Physics written by Don Koks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-09-15 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why the language of modern physics centres on geometry? Or how quantum operators and Dirac brackets work? What a convolution really is? What tensors are all about? Or what field theory and lagrangians are, and why gravity is described as curvature? This book takes you on a tour of the main ideas forming the language of modern mathematical physics. Here you will meet novel approaches to concepts such as determinants and geometry, wave function evolution, statistics, signal processing, and three-dimensional rotations. You will see how the accelerated frames of special relativity tell us about gravity. On the journey, you will discover how tensor notation relates to vector calculus, how differential geometry is built on intuitive concepts, and how variational calculus leads to field theory. You will meet quantum measurement theory, along with Green functions and the art of complex integration, and finally general relativity and cosmology. The book takes a fresh approach to tensor analysis built solely on the metric and vectors, with no need for one-forms. This gives a much more geometrical and intuitive insight into vector and tensor calculus, together with general relativity, than do traditional, more abstract methods. Don Koks is a physicist at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation in Adelaide, Australia. His doctorate in quantum cosmology was obtained from the Department of Physics and Mathematical Physics at Adelaide University. Prior work at the University of Auckland specialised in applied accelerator physics, along with pure and applied mathematics.

Book Synopsis The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad and Further Explorations by : Alexander Soifer
Download or read book The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad and Further Explorations written by Alexander Soifer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated printing of the first edition of Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: the First Twenty Years and Further Explorations gives the interesting history of the competition as well as an outline of all the problems and solutions that have been created for the contest over the years. Many of the essay problems were inspired by Russian mathematical folklore and written to suit the young audience; for example, the 1989 Sugar problem was written in a pleasant Lewis Carroll-like story. Some other entertaining problems involve olde Victorian map colourings, King Authur and the knights of the round table, rooks in space, Santa Claus and his elves painting planes, football for 23, and even the Colorado Springs subway system.

Book Synopsis Functions in Mathematics by : Mark Daniels
Download or read book Functions in Mathematics written by Mark Daniels and published by Cognella Academic Pub. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When discussing the mathematical knowledge of elementary school teachers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics concludes that teachers must have a deep understanding of mathematics and be able to easily draw on that knowledge with flexibility in their teaching tasks. Mathematics teachers must understand the big ideas of mathematics and be able to represent mathematics as a coherent and connected endeavor. This inquiry and exploration-based workbook has been designed as a tool for pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers to use as a guidebook for "doing mathematics" and exploring mathematics topics in depth. The lessons chosen for this text serve as a function-based approach that connects important topics in the secondary mathematics curriculum and act as a bridge to university-level mathematics. Whether used as a course text or for individual professional development purposes, this book should be approached from the standpoint of discovery and reflection about the significance of the selected topics. It is the authors' hope that the explorations contained within serve as vehicles for classroom discussion and presentation of mathematics topics, or as starting points for further investigation. Efraim P. Armendariz is a professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin. His mathematical interests include noncommutative ring theory, development of educational programs addressing accessibility issues, and development of secondary mathematics teachers. He received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1966. Mark L. Daniels is a clinical associate professor of mathematics and UTeach Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests involve the preparation of pre-service teachers and the incorporation of instructional methodology in mathematics courses taken by students seeking certification.
