Book excerpt: This Workbook provides students with an attractive and engaging means of reviewing, reinforcing and applying the material of Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers Fourth Edition, chapter by chapter. The material in the workbook has been tested and endorsed by primary PGCE trainees. Detailed solutions and explanatory notes are provided at the end of the book for each task. The self-assessment tasks are of three kinds: - Checking Understanding Tasks designed to help the reader to check their own understanding of key concepts and principles and their mastery of important skills in each chapter. - Processes and Applications Tasks that provide opportunities to apply the mathematical content of each chapter in real-life situations, and in puzzles, problems, investigations and other mathematical challenges. - Teaching and Learning: tasks that provide opportunities for the reader to consider their responses to children's errors and misunderstandings, and to consider the content of each chapter in terms of approaches to teaching and learning in a primary school context.

Book excerpt: This book examines how mathematical mastery, influenced by East Asian teaching approaches, can be developed in UK schools to enhance teaching and to deepen children’s mathematical knowledge. It gives guidance on using physical resources to demonstrate key concepts, extended examples on how to teach different curriculum topics and how to plan for small-step progression. It argues that effective mastery teaching requires careful and knowledgeable support for primary teachers who may not yet be maths specialists. New to this second edition: New chapter on variation theory and practice Updated case studies exploring how mastery teaching has evolved Updated review of current mastery resources available to UK teachers Robert Newell is a lecturer at the UCL Institute of Education, London.

Book excerpt: The international New Math developments between about 1950 through 1980, are regarded by many mathematics educators and education historians as the most historically important development in curricula of the twentieth century. It attracted the attention of local and international politicians, of teachers, and of parents, and influenced the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels—kindergarten to college graduate—in many nations. After garnering much initial support it began to attract criticism. But, as Bill Jacob and the late Jerry Becker show in Chapter 17, some of the effects became entrenched. This volume, edited by Professor Dirk De Bock, of Belgium, provides an outstanding overview of the New Math/modern mathematics movement. Chapter authors provide exceptionally high-quality analyses of the rise of the movement, and of subsequent developments, within a range of nations. The first few chapters show how the initial leadership came from mathematicians in European nations and in the United States of America. The background leaders in Europe were Caleb Gattegno and members of a mysterious group of mainly French pure mathematicians, who since the 1930s had published under the name of (a fictitious) “Nicolas Bourbaki.” In the United States, there emerged, during the 1950s various attempts to improve U.S. mathematics curricula and teaching, especially in secondary schools and colleges. This side of the story climaxed in 1957 when the Soviet Union succeeded in launching “Sputnik,” the first satellite. Undoubtedly, this is a landmark publication in education. The foreword was written by Professor Bob Moon, one of a few other scholars to have written on the New Math from an international perspective. The final “epilogue” chapter, by Professor Geert Vanpaemel, a historian, draws together the overall thrust of the volume, and makes links with the general history of curriculum development, especially in science education, including recent globalization trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alltranslation is a compromise-the effort to be literal and the e. ffort to be idiomatic BenjaminJowett (1817-93) This book is designed to provide intermediate and advanced students of English with practice in the translation ofDutch texts into English. It contains fifty prose passages, most of them taken from recent Dutch novels or journals, all of them tried out on several generations of our own students in the 'pre-kandidaatsfase' of their studies at the English Department of the University of Nijmegen. In these respects, it is not spectacularly different from many other books ofits kind. We have, however, tried to offer the student rather more support in his translation work than is usually clone: each text is provided with a suggested translation of the first few lines and with notes containing information on grammar and idiom, sometimes preceded by supplementary material from British or American sources. The second part of the book comprises a short contrastive grammar speciallywritten to meet theneeds oftheuser. In this way wehope to offer a self-contained translation course which reinforces the interdependence of grammar, vocabulary, textual interpretation and style. Most ofthe texts in this book are reproduced in substantially the sameform and wording as in the original sources. In some cases editing was necessary in order, for example, to reduce long articles to more manageable proportions. In no cases, however, were we moved to doctor the originals in order to disambiguate them or to make them easier to translate.

This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume is devoted to the recent history and evolution of mathematics education in Eastern Europe, exploring how it was influenced by social and political changes in this part of the world. Despite the broad recognition of the importance of these changes, little scholarship exists that examines the ways in which they were followed by changes in the teaching of mathematics in the post-socialist countries. Indeed, the analyzed processes are complex and vary across the states. Accordingly, this book touches on many factors--including differences in cultures and traditions – that find expression in the teaching of mathematics. Specifically, this volume seeks to explore what changes there were in education in general and in the position of mathematics in school education in these years, and how these changes may be explained and documented; what changes there were in the content of mathematics education and its assessment, and how were they motivated and adopted; what new textbooks appeared and what new methodological ideas were offered in them; how and why mathematics teacher education and/or professional development changed; what was the role (if any) of foreign influences on mathematics education, etc.The book will be of interest to both researchers in mathematics education and practitioners-teachers, as well as a broader audience of historians and educators exploring the political aspects of education.
