Download or read book XPS-99: Knowledge-Based Systems - Survey and Future Directions written by Frank Puppe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-11-20 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A special year like 1999 invites one to draw a balance of what has been achieved in the roughly 30 years of research and development in knowledge based systems (still abbreviated as XPS following the older term “expert systems”) and to take a look at th what the future may hold. For the 5 German conference on knowledge-based systems we therefore asked current and former speakers of the four working groups (FG’s) in the subdivision of knowledge-based systems (FA 1.5) of the German association of Informatics (GI) to present a survey of and future prospects for their respective fields: knowledge engineering, diagnosis, configuration, and case-based reasoning. An additional 14 technical papers deal with current topics in knowledge-based systems with an equal emphasis on methods and applications. They are selected from more than 50 papers accepted in the 4 parallel workshops of XPS-99: a) Knowledge Management, Organizational Memory and Reuse, b) various fields of applications, c) the traditional PuK Workshop (planning and configuration), and d) the GWCBR (German workshop on case-based reasoning). The other papers presented at these workshops are not included in this volume but are available as internal reports of Würzburg university together with the exhibition guide that emphasizing tool support for building knowledge based systems.

Book Synopsis CIM Computer Integrated Manufacturing by : August-Wilhelm Scheer
Download or read book CIM Computer Integrated Manufacturing written by August-Wilhelm Scheer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is the computerized handling of integrated business processes among all different functions in an enterprise. The consistent application of information technology, along with modern manufacturing techniques and new organizational procedures, opens up great potential for speeding up processes. This book discusses the current state of applications and new demands arising from the integration principle. It mainly emphasizes on strategies for realization and implementation based on the author's concrete experience. The "Y-CIM information management" model is presented as a procedural method for implementing CIM. The third edition has been supplemented by up-to-date specified examples of applied CIM solutions and transfer strategies.
Download or read book COMPSTAT written by Konstantin Momirovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although no-one is, probably, too enthused about the idea, it is a fact that the development of most empirical sciences to a great extent depends on the development of data analysis methods and techniques, which, due to the necessity of application of computers for that purpose, actually means that it practically depends on the advancement and orientation of computer statistics. Every other year the International Association for Statistical Computing sponsors the organizition of meetings of individual s professiona77y involved in computational statistics. Since these meetings attract professionals from allover the world, they are a good sample for the estimation of trends in this area which some believe is a statistics proper while others claim it is computer science. It seems, though, that an increasing number of colleagues treat it as an independent scientific or at least technical discipline. This volume contains six invited papers, 41 contributed papers and, finally, two papers which are, formally, software descriptions, but it was agreed by the Program Committee that they should be included in a separate section entitled "Notes about new developments in statistical software", due to their special significance for current trends in computational statistics.

Book Synopsis Principles of Efficient Information Management by : August-Wilhelm Scheer
Download or read book Principles of Efficient Information Management written by August-Wilhelm Scheer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book appeared in the Federal Republic of Gennany in 1984. and in English translation as "Computer: A Challenge for Business Administration" in 1985. This book. which is a translation of the fourth Gennan edition. has been comprehensively revised. As a result both the character and the expected audience of the book have changed. which is reflected in the alteration to the title. This book adresses itself to issues arising from the research areas of both infonnation systems and computer science. Computer science departments are primarily concerned with the development of EDP techniques. and the business economics aspects remain largely Ignored. The emphasis in infonnation systems departments is placed on the investigation of the business economic impact of the use of already existing systems. This strongly empirical approach is accompanied by a disinclination to consider actual system deSign: this is considered the responsibility of the software houses. This partitioning. however. leaves untapped the considerable potential which could be realized by an interdisciplinary approach from computer science and business economics. An isolated approach neglects both the effects that business economics can have on the implementation of EDP techniques. and the structural impact of EDP on business economics.

Book Synopsis Expert Systems and Decision Support in Medicine by : Otto Rienhoff
Download or read book Expert Systems and Decision Support in Medicine written by Otto Rienhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 33rd Annual Meeting of the German Association for Medical Documentation, Informatics and Statistics was combined with a Special Topic Conference of the European Federation for Medical Informatics and takes place at Hannover, F. R. of Germany, from September 26 to 29, 1988. It was planned and initililly prepared by the late Prof. P. L Reichertz, who headed the Hannover institute from 1969 to 1987. To commemorate his contribution to the development of medicine the conference was devoted to him "Peter Reichertz Memorial Conference on Expert Systems and Decision Support in Medicine" Since computers in the early Fifties were first applied to support medical reasoning, various phases of euphoria and resi~ation have . followed. Every new methodology which became technically possible was and will be applied to the old questlon of how to diagnose diseases more reliably. Artificial Intelligence is just one new approach to the old challenge. Over the years some· authors have been very optimistic and put forward opinions which motivated the common press to coin the phrase 'Dr. med. computer'. Papers printed under this heading rebuffed the majority of physiCians for many years. Today we know that medical decision making is a most complex buman performance. And 30 years of research on decision support have given us only limited insight into the underlying processes. Most of the principal methodological questions were already asked very early on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental informatics is a field of applied computer science that develops and uses the techniques of information processing for environmental protection, research and engineering. The multidisciplinary nature of environmental problems needs environmental informatics as a bridge and mediator between many disciplines and institutions. The present book presents a wide range of topics currently being pursued in the area, including basic methodological issues and typical applications. A significant number of recognised experts have contributed to the volume, discussing the methodology and application of environmental monitoring, environmental databases and information systems, GIS, modeling software, environmental management systems, knowledge-based systems, and the visualisation of complex environmental data. For scholarly and professional practitioners of environmental management who wish to acquire well-founded knowledge of environmental information processing and specialists in applied computer science who wish to learn more about the contribution of their field to the solution of our urgent environmental problems.
