Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of CAD to electronics technology Computer-aided design (CAD) is one way of coping with the problem of how to design and build very complex systems. This problem is particularly acute in electronics technology. Designs are now (1984) said to be design-limited, rather than technology-limited. It can take months to generate a design for a chip, so that it might be obsolete before it can be manufactured. Manual design of large-scale integration (LSI) chips (circa 10,000 gates) is almost impossible. However, using current technology it is possible to produce chips having 250,000 gates. It is understandable, therefore, that there is great interest in improving existing CAD systems. Designers of CAD systems are concerned with formalizing and automating as much of the design task as possible. Automating design of any kind has long been acknowledged as a project fraught with intractable problems. A human designer has to have an understanding of the nature of the materials used in manufacture, a knowledge of common problems and well-tried solutions, and above all, creativity in producing new designs. Understanding, knowledge and creativity are three properties even the most artificially intelligent of computer programs have been entirely lacking in until very recently. Some people would deny computers these qualities entirely, on philosophical grounds (eg Dreyfus 1979; Searle 1981). There are few theories in cognitive psychology which can help.

Book excerpt: This book -updated for Release 2019- aims at guiding he who uses AutoCAD on a daily basis in becoming a true expert. That kind of AutoCAD expert that is acquainted with, understands and can manipulate the program's inner workings to achieve the desired output in a fast and efficient way. That expert who is not satisfied with what comes out of the box, but demands more. Like automating the creation and shaping of 3D objects, whether 3DSolids, subdivision meshes, associative or NURBS surfaces and setting the points of view and visualization modes that help in understanding the generated models. To these and other advanced techniques, including parameterization, reactors, the graphical user interface and building applications, more than half of this book is dedicated. For this we use Visual LISP, the tool of choice to customize and extend AutoCAD's features, be it by its capabilities as a basic scripting language to automate repetitive tasks or taking advantage of advanced drawing database access possibilities and the management of properties and methods exposed through the ActiveX interface. LISP programming techniques, including the use of the Visual LISP Integrated Development Environment, are explained starting from scratch. No previous experience in programming is required to profit from this book's contents. User support is available at http: //lispexpert.blogspot.com/. Book excerpt: Materials Information for CAD/CAM addresses the problem of designing databases, expert system, communication systems, and decision support aids that can be integrated with manual and software-supported tasks in design and manufacture, in CAD and CAM. This book covers tasks of materials selection, materials process simulation, and materials modelling that involve access to materials identification or property information. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the use of materials information in engineering design and manufacture. This text then explains how computerized CAD/CAM systems change the ways in which this information has been effectively used. Other chapters consider the organizational and technical aspects of data interchange in general. This book discusses as well the requirements in representing materials information in databases. The final chapter deals with integrated design environments with respects to their capabilities for utilizing materials information. This book is intended to be suitable for anyone who is planning the construction, management, or use of any kind of engineering materials property information system.
