Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aerial Dispersal of the Pink Bollworm in the United States and Mexico: Production Research Report No. 96 Light traps have been used to detect the occur rence and dispersal of pink bollworm moths in many areas. Glick and Hollingsworth who operated traps in the lower Rio Grande Valley during the summer and fall of 1952, collected many pink bollworm moths; they trapped more moths in late August than in any other month. During one night (august immediately after cotton stalks in the area had all been destroyed, they collected an estimated pink bollworm moths. The following ni ht, the collected only and 8 days later Septem r 6) only 34. They concluded that because the cotton stalks had been completely destroyed, the moths had taken flight to another area more promising. Since at this time the prevailing wind was south southeast, they probably dispersed in a northerly direction. During the late summer of 1952, Glick and Hollingsworth (8) collected pink bollworm moths from light traps placed in the northeastern part of Texas; before this time the area had not been known to be infested. Their finding indicated that moths had migrated into the area. The moths were probably carried by the southerly winds from a heavy infestation on late cotton in the Corpus Christi area that was present in the fall of 1951. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pink Bollworm Control in the Western United States Avoidance of early planting can reduce the numbers of moths that survive to infest cotton in the spring. If planting is too late, however, it can result in yield losses, increased damage by late season infestations of insects such as the tobacco budworm, and increased proportions of the pink bollworm and other pests entering the overwintering stage. The most practical approach to reducing pink bollworm populations is to plant when optimal conditions for seed germination occur, produce a heavy boll set before the extreme summer heat reduces fruiting, and terminate fruiting earlier than it is now normally accomplished. At present, early termination of fruiting is limited to cessation of irrigation and to early maturing varieties. An irrigation termination of August 1 at Yuma, Ariz., reduced overwintering pink bollworm populations with no reduction in yield compared with later irrigation termination dates. This date would have to be altered for other locations, depending on soil type and other factors. Not only does the production of an early cotton crop decrease overwintering pink bollworm populations, it also may result in increased quality of the cotton by avoiding insect damage, boll rot, and storm damage that can occur in later cotton. Plant growth regulators have been used effectively to terminate cotton fruiting. These may have some advantages over irrigation termination, but none is registered for this use on cotton as yet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Maggot Trap in Practical Use: An Experiment in House-Fly Control It is the writer's intention here merely to point out that the disposal of manure on the platform maggot trap is but a slight modification of the method just mentioned. Figure 4 differs from a diagram given by Ringelmann only in the platform and in the outlets through which the drowned larvae may be washed into the cistern. Here is shown the cistern in which the liquid manure collects. Watering with the liquid manure adds to the heap the valuable Constituents of the urine and promotes the anaerobic fermentation. If it is true, as just suggested, that lack of oxygen and the presence of carbon dioxid render the manure unfavorable for the development of the larvae, it follows that compact heaping and watering, by excluding air and increasing the moisture content, also insure the greatest percentage of migration. As a matter of fact, compactness and high moisture content are the very factors which make the maggot trap mest effective, whether the explanation is to be found in the temperature, or moisture, or lack of oxygen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Response of Insects to Induced Light: Presentation Papers This publication contains the presentation papers given at a symposium on the response of insects to induced light, sponsored by the Agricultural Research Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, which was held at the Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland, February 3 and 4, 1960. For the purposes of this symposium the radiant energy considered was defined as visible, ultraviolet, and infrared electromagnetic radiations having a wavelength range of to Angstrom units. Between 80 and 90 scientists attended this symposium as representatives of Federal and State research and regulatory agencies and industrial companies. The speakers discussed the nature of light sources; methods of applying induced light to influence insect response; the effects of light characteristics on insect response; the physiology of insect response to light; effects of Species; effects of environment and physiological development on insect responses; and the possibilities and limitation of light traps for use in insect detection, prediction, and control. It is hoped that both the symposium and this publication of the presenta tion papers will contribute to a better understanding of the relationship of light to insect responses and will stimulate further basic and applied research, leading to greater use of radiant energy in meeting insect problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 98% of sprayed insecticides and 95% of herbicides reach a destination other than their target species, including non-target species, air, water and soil. The extensive reliance on insecticide use reduces biodiversity, contributes to pollinator decline, destroys habitat, and threatens endangered species. This book offers a more effective application of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, on an area-wide (AW) or population-wide (AW-IPM) basis, which aims at the management of the total population of a pest, involving a coordinated effort over often larger areas. For major livestock pests, vectors of human diseases and pests of high-value crops with low pest tolerance, there are compelling economic reasons for participating in AW-IPM. This new textbook attempts to address various fundamental components of AW-IPM, e.g. the importance of relevant problem-solving research, the need for planning and essential baseline data collection, the significance of integrating adequate tools for appropriate control strategies, and the value of pilot trials, etc. With chapters authored by 184 experts from more than 31 countries, the book includes many technical advances in the areas of genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, resistance management, and social sciences that facilitate the planning and implementing of area-wide strategies. The book is essential reading for the academic and applied research community as well as national and regional government plant and human/animal health authorities with responsibility for protecting plant and human/animal health.

Many proposed applications of gene drive research aim to solve environmental and public health challenges, including the reduction of poverty and the burden of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue, which disproportionately impact low and middle income countries. However, due to their intrinsic qualities of rapid spread and irreversibility, gene drive systems raise many questions with respect to their safety relative to public and environmental health. Because gene drive systems are designed to alter the environments we share in ways that will be hard to anticipate and impossible to completely roll back, questions about the ethics surrounding use of this research are complex and will require very careful exploration. Gene Drives on the Horizon outlines the state of knowledge relative to the science, ethics, public engagement, and risk assessment as they pertain to research directions of gene drive systems and governance of the research process. This report offers principles for responsible practices of gene drive research and related applications for use by investigators, their institutions, the research funders, and regulators.
