Book Synopsis Multisensory Integration: Brain, Body and the World by : Magda L. Dumitru
Download or read book Multisensory Integration: Brain, Body and the World written by Magda L. Dumitru and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral, language, and reasoning are expressions of neural functions par excellence, as the brain must draw on sensory modalities to gather information on the rest of the body and on the outer world. Cortical areas processing the identity and location of the sensory inputs were once thought to be organized, with some branches dedicated to complex features. Yet current studies have uncovered synergistic effects at early-stage cognitions as well as higher-level association areas. A less hierarchical functional architecture of the brain has emerged such that, irrespective of sensory modality, inputs are assigned to the best suited cortical substrate.

Book Synopsis An Experimental and Analytical Vibration Study of Elliptical Cylindrical Shells by : John L. Sewall
Download or read book An Experimental and Analytical Vibration Study of Elliptical Cylindrical Shells written by John L. Sewall and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports an experimental and analytical vibration study of free-free isotropic elliptical cylindrical shells of constant mass ranging in cross-sectional eccentricity from zero (circular shell) to 0.916. Experimental resonant frequencies, nodal patterns, and mode shapes were obtained by use of an air-jet shaker or an electrodynamic shaker with a noncontact inductance probe that could be moved over most of the shell surface. Experimental frequencies were in generally good agreement with analytical frequencies calculated by means of a Rayleigh-Ritz type of analysis featuring multiterm longitudinal and circumferential modal expansions. Frequencies for shells with eccentricity of 0.916 were as much as 40 percent below the corresponding circular-shell frequencies. As eccentricity increased, analytical and experimental mode shapes indicated considerable longitudinal and circumferential modal coupling.
Book Synopsis Virtual Experiments in Mechanical Vibrations by : Michael J. Brennan
Download or read book Virtual Experiments in Mechanical Vibrations written by Michael J. Brennan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VIRTUAL EXPERIMENTS in MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS The first book of its kind to explain fundamental concepts in both vibrations and signal processing using MATLAB virtual experiments Students and young engineers with a strong grounding in engineering theory often lack the practical skills and knowledge required to carry out experimental work in the laboratory. Fundamental and time-consuming errors can be avoided with the appropriate training and a solid understanding of basic concepts in vibrations and/or signal processing, which are critical to testing new designs. Virtual Experiments in Mechanical Vibrations: Structural Dynamics and Signal Processing is designed for readers with limited knowledge of vibrations and signal processing. The intention is to help them relate vibration theory to measurements carried out in the laboratory. With a hands-on approach that emphasizes physics rather than mathematics, this practical resource explains fundamental concepts in vibrations and signal processing. It uses the concept of a virtual experiment together with MATLAB to show how the dynamic properties of vibration isolators can be determined, how vibration absorbers can be designed, and how they perform on distributed parameter structures. Readers will find that this text: Allows the concepts of experimental work to be discussed and simulated in the classroom using a physics-based approach Presents computational virtual experiments using MATLAB examples to determine the dynamic behaviour of several common dynamic systems Explains the rationale of virtual experimentation and describes typical vibration testing setups Introduces the signal processing tools needed to determine the frequency response of a system from input and output data Includes access to a companion website containing MATLAB code Virtual Experiments in Mechanical Vibrations: Structural Dynamics and Signal Processing is a must-have resource for researchers, mechanical engineers, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are new to the subjects of vibrations, signal processing, and vibration testing. It is also an invaluable tool for universities where the possibilities of doing experimental work are limited.
