Book excerpt: "Experiments upon Magnesia Alba, Quicklime, and some other Alkaline Substances" is a groundbreaking paintings by Joseph Black, a pioneering Scottish chemist and physician of the 18th century. The book outlines Black's meticulous experiments and influential discoveries within the realm of chemistry. In this seminal treatise, Black focuses on the chemical properties of magnesia alba (magnesium carbonate) and quicklime (calcium oxide). Through rigorous experimentation, he explores the reactions of those alkaline substances with acids, imparting crucial insights into the character of chemical reactions. A highlight of Black's contributions is his identification and exploration of carbon dioxide gas at some stage in the reaction between magnesia alba and acids. This seminal discovery laid the basis for the information of gases as wonderful chemical entities, revolutionizing the sphere of chemistry. Joseph Black's paintings on magnesia alba, quicklime, and alkaline substances notably advanced scientific knowledge, mainly within the knowledge of chemical reactions and the homes of gases. His influential experiments set the degree for future tendencies in chemistry, making "Experiments upon Magnesia Alba, Quicklime, and some other Alkaline Substances" a foundational textual content inside the records of science.

Book excerpt: "[...] This experiment was repeated with the volatile alkali, and also with the fossil or alkali of sea-salt, and exactly with the same event. The third proposition had less appearance of probability than the foregoing; but, as an accurate experiment was the only test of its truth, I reduced eight grains of perfect quick-lime made of chalk, to an exceedingly subtile powder, by slaking it in two drams of distilled water boiling hot, and immediately threw the mixture into eighteen ounces of distilled water in a flask. After shaking it, a light sediment, which floated thro' the liquor, was allowed to subside and this, when collected with the greatest care, and dryed, weighed, as nearly as I could guess, one third of a grain. The water tasted strongly of the[...]".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments Upon Magnesia Alba, Quick-Lime, and Other Alcaline Substances Salt-petre is separated from the brine which first affords it, or from the water with which it is washed out of nitrous earths, by the process commonly used in crystallizing salts. In this process, the brine is gradually diminished, and at length reduced to a small quantity of an unctuous bitter saline liquor, affording no more salt petre by evaporation, but, if urged with a brisk fire, drying up into a confused mass, which attracts water strongly, and becomes uid again when exposed to the open air. Book excerpt: A Complete Guide to Magnesia-From Mining to End Use Often relegated to footnote status in texts, magnesia is nevertheless a valuable substance widely used in applications ranging from wastewater treatment to catalysis. The Chemistry and Technology of Magnesia fills the long-standing gap in the literature with a comprehensive, one-stop reference to "all things magnesia." The book brings together the many strands of information on magnesium compounds, their production, testing and evaluation, technology, applications, and markets. Opening with an introductory history of the chemical, it covers the life cycle of magnesia, natural and synthetic production, and uses in different fields including the environmental, health, and agricultural industries. Readers will find the section on health and safety issues particularly relevant. Chapters include: * The History of Magnesia * Synthetic Magnesia * Pulp Applications * Environmental Applications * Magnesia Cements * Furnaces and Kilns * Post Calcination Processing * Other Magnesia Products * Mining and Processing Magnesite * The Physical and Chemical Properties of Magnesium Oxide * Water and Wastewater Application for Magnesia Products * Magnesia in Polymer Applications * The Role of Magnesium in Animal, Plants, and Human Nutrition * Magnesium Salts and Magnesium Metal * The Formation and Occurrence of Magnesite * Calcination of Magnesium Hydroxide and Carbonate * Miscellaneous Magnesia Applications

Download or read book Science and Technology in Medicine written by Andras Gedeon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-16 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history and evolution of the fields of science and medicine are symbiotically linked and thus are mutually dependent. Discoveries in one domain have allowed for progress in the other, and it is nearly impossible to study one area in isolation. The influence of science and technologic discoveries on medicine has profoundly impacted the way physicians practice and has resulted in an extended life expectancy and quality of life that our ancestors never dreamed possible. Science and Technology in Medicine is a collection of 99 essays based on landmark publications that have appeared in the medical literature over the past 500 years. Each essay includes a summary of the article or chapter; text and images reproduced directly from the original source; a short biography of the author(s); and a discussion about the significance of the discovery and its subsequent influence on later developments. Original material by the likes of Dürer, Bernoulli, Doppler, Pasteur, Trendelenburg, Curie and Röntgen offers readers a rare glimpse at publications housed in archives around the world, beautifully reproduced in one fascinating volume.
