Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Techniques for Electron Scattering Investigations For many years it has been said that electron scattering is a powerful tool for the study of nuclear structure, because quantum electrodynamics is a very accurate theory and because the weakness of the electromagnetic interaction allows accurate theoretical interpreta tion of experimental results. In spite of these advantages, electron scattering has in the past contributed little to our understanding of the nucleus, in contrast to the vast amount of information obtained by reaction studies employing nuclear particles (protons, alphas, This situation has changed greatly in recent times, and electron scat tering is at last proving its great value as an experimental technique for the study of nuclear properties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Variational Calculation of the Elastic: Scattering of Electrons, by Hydrogen Atoms One of the important problems of upper atmospheric and astrophysical research is the determination of the frequencies of collisions between electrons and atomic systems. Informa tion on this subject can be obtained from a knowledge of the total cross-section, Q, and to some extent from the differential cross-section, (hg), of the collision. The temperatures at which these collisions occur are of such a magnitude that the electron energies are of the order of a fraction of an electron volt, and at these low energies the problems associated with experimental determinations of the cross-sections become complex. Consequently there is a deficiency of experimental data. It is therefore essential to have theoretical methods for calculating the cross-sections. Book excerpt: In 1968, the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) published Special Publication 298 "Quantitative Electron Probe Microanalysis," which contained proceedings of a seminar held on the subject at NBS in the summer of 1967. This publication received wide interest that continued through the years far beyond expectations. The present volume, also the result of a gathering of international experts, in 1988, at NBS (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST), is intended to fulfill the same purpose. After years of substantial agreement on the procedures of analysis and data evaluation, several sharply differentiated approaches have developed. These are described in this publi cation with all the details required for practical application. Neither the editors nor NIST wish to endorse any single approach. Rather, we hope that their exposition will stimulate the dialogue which is a prerequisite for technical progress. Additionally, it is expected that those active in research in electron probe microanalysis will appreciate more clearly the areas in which further investigations are warranted.

Book excerpt: A summary is given on research in which electron diffraction was employed to measure experimentally the shape of charge distributions surrounding atoms and molecules. The research showed that: It was possible to obtain experimental intensity data of sufficient accuracy to provide sensitive tests for the best available theoretical wave functions for simple atomic systems. That the Born theory of scattering is amazingly accurate. (.1% or better) for atoms (Ne) at high incident electron energies (40keV); and that data for simple polyatomic systems (N2, CO2, N2O, CH4) can be obtained which provides a more sensitive measure of deviations of the electron density from a test model of the density than any currently available theoretical wave function.

Book excerpt: The development of new materials is recognized as one of the major elements in the overall technological evolution that must go on in order to sustain and even improve the quality of life for citizens of all nations. There are many components to this development, but one is to achieve a better understanding of the properties of materials using the most sophisticated scientific tools that are available. As condensed matter physicists and materials scientists work toward this goal, they find that it is useful to divide their efforts and focus on specific areas, because certain analytical and theoretical techniques will be more useful for the study of one class of materials than another. One such area is the study of metals and metallic alloys, which are used in the manufacture of products as diverse as automobiles and space stations. Progress in this area has been very rapid in recent years, and the new developments come from many different countries. For these reasons the Advanced Research Workshop Programme in the NATO Scientific Affairs Division has seen fit to sponsor several meetings to bring together the researchers and students working in this field from the NATO countries and elsewhere. There have been a series of NATO-ASI's that have dealt with the results of research on the electronic structure of materials and the properties of metals, alloys, and interfaces. They are: "Electrons in finite and infinite structures" P. Phariseau and L.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year a large number of first rate articles on the physics and technology of semiconductor devices, written by Soviet experts in the field, are published. However, due to the lack of exchange and personal contact, most of these, unfortunately, are neglected by many scientists from the United States, Japan as well as Western Europe. Consequently, many important developments in semiconductor physics are missed by the Western world. This book is a serious attempt to bridge the gap between the Soviet and Western scientific communities. Most of all, it is an effort towards facilitating the communication and sharing of knowledge amongst people from different parts of the world. Ultimately, the aim is to contribute towards the building of a better world for all ? one where the knowledge of advanced technology and scientific discoveries is used to improve the quality of life and not the pursuit of selfish mutually destructive behavior. For those in the field who wish to partake in this exchange of knowledge and as a gesture of support for their Soviet counterparts, the reading of this book provides the first step.
