Underprediction of heat transfer rates can result in catastrophic failures during flight testing. An example which illustrates the importance of heat transfer during hypersonic flight is the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia during the re-entry portion of STS-107. The shuttle experienced damage to its heat shielding, which in turn was not able to protect the craft from the extremely high levels of heat transfer experience during re-entry, resulting in the destruction of the craft. Due to both the high costs and dangers associated with flight testing, ground based experimental heat transfer data is essential the the design of safe and efficient hypersonic craft. Experimental data in facilities which have the ability to create mid to high enthalpy flowfields without large amounts of freestream dissociation is highly desirable in order to both validate CFD codes and to determine the effects of variations in geometry on heat transfer. The Hypervelocity Expansion Tube (HET) is one of a few facilities in the US that are able to create these flows, and thus it is an optimal test bed for these types of studies. Two gage types used in order to measure surface heat transfer, thermocouples and thin film gages. This thesis details the development and application of thermocouples and thin film surface heat transfer gages in the HET. These gages have been extensively used in other hypersonic facilities, but their application and comparison in intermediate enthalpy conditions (like those created in the HET) has not been well established in previous reports. This study sought to compare the performance of the gages and to apply them to canonical model geometries to investigate heat transfer in the HET.

Experiments were performed to test this theory by constructing a model, a 5 deg. half-angle cone, with very fine porosity on one side and a solid surface on the other, and testing it in the hypervelocity shock tunnel at Caltech. The results show that a dramatic delay of transition could be achieved in the nitrogen flow for which the porosity was designed. In carbon-dioxide flows, for which the transition Reynolds number is much higher at the high enthalpies of the experiments, the porosity on the model is too coarse and acts like roughness, actually advancing transition. The transition delay achievable with proper porosity design promises large reduction of heat loads on launch and reentry vehicles.

Book excerpt: The experimental technique presented provides a surface of controlled moderately high temperature in a flow of homogeneous and chemically determined gas at high speeds. With this technique it is possible to make detailed temperature and power dissipation surveys over the controlled surface. Detailed Schlieren studies of processes occurring in the boundary layer at the heated surface under these circumstances may be obtained. It is possible to determine mass flux rates from small surface areas with comparatively good accuracy. The present laminar result shows reasonable correlation with the reference enthalpy method of predicting local values of heat flux but the correlation of this data with the theory must be substantiated by additional information. The investigation of heat flux in a region of a strong boundary layer shock wave interaction gives values approximately 4.5 times higher than those predicted by the laminar theory. Surface deterioration studies indicate that a silicon carbide coating on a graphite surface may be a practical inhibitor of surface deterioration at temperatures up to 3200 R in air.

In vaporizing flow systems involving high heat flux in multiple parallel channels, thermohydraulic instabilities are frequent, resulting in pulsing or oscillating flow. The work describe here presents a unique data set involving wall temperature, film thickness and pressure drops. Making these measurements simultaneously allows comparison of published heat transfer coefficient correlations with experimentally determined HTCs. One published model relates HTC to the wall shear, tau, and film thickness, delta. The delta-tau model consistently under-predicts the measured heat transfer coefficient. Further, as pulse frequency increases, both the film thickness and heat transfer coefficient respond less to the oscillating flow.
