Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study has been undertaken in order to investigate plasma wakefield effects produced in intense electron beam propagation in a background plasma. A 2 MeV, 1 kA, electron beam is used for this experiment. A 50 cm diam., 3.6 m long drift tube is filled with a background gas, typically trimethylamine (TMA). This gas is ionized by electrons emitted from heated tungsten filaments which are biased at approximately -100 Volts. The resultant plasma density is fairly uniform and is adjustable in the range 10 to the 8th power to 5 x 10 to the 9th power per cubic cm. A higher density Ion Focused Regime (IFR) channel for electron beam propagation is generated by KrF-laser (248 nm) ionization of the background TMA gas. The intense electron beam propagating on an IFR channel in this background plasma experiences wakefield effects due to the natural oscillations of the background plasma which are excited by the beam current risetime. The Ez component of the induced field is responsible for producing beam current modulation near the background plasma frequency. The results scale with plasma density as expected and current modulation is nearly complete for a certain parameter range. This technique may be amenable to a high power microwave generation technique analogous to the relativistic klystron. Detailed experimental results of beam modulation will be presented.
Book Synopsis Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High-pressure Air by : Nikita Wells
Download or read book Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High-pressure Air written by Nikita Wells and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet research on the propagation of intense relativistic electron beams (IREB) through fairly high-pressure air (pressure range 0.1 to 760 Torr) since the early 1970s has included the study of the plasma channel created by the passage of the electron beam through air, the resistive hose instability and its effect on beam propagation, the effect of self-fields, current enhancement, gas expansion, return currents, inherent beam energy spread, and other factors. This report covers Soviet developments in IREB propagation through air where the beam is not focused by external magnetic fields. The information was obtained from Soviet open-source publications with emphasis given to the last ten years of beam propagation in the Soviet Union. The volume of papers published on this subject in recent years indicates a significant increase in Soviet research in this area.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes Soviet research on the transport of intense relativistic electron beams (IREB) through low-pressure air and other gases without external magnetic fields. It reviews research reported in open-source technical publications from seven Soviet research institutes. These research papers indicate that Soviet interest in long-distance IREB transport at low gas pressure has endured from 1979 to the present.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the Maryland Program is to establish strong experimental and theoretical support for ongoing programs at NRL. Areas of research which are of mutual interest are pursued by members of the University of Maryland faculty in collaboration with their counterparts at NRL. The proposal encompasses basically three broad areas of research activities. The first area deals with excimer laser technology and the interaction of high power lasers with matter (gases, solids and plasma). The second area of mutual interest involves diagnostics of intense relativistic electron beams and study of their propagation and interaction with a background gas. The nonlinear temporal dynamics in neural networks is the third area for collaboration.

Download or read book Relativistic Electron Beam Propagation in the Ion Focusing Regime written by J. R. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents observations on propagation of a mildly relativistic electron beam (gamma = 2.4) in several different gases (air, Helium, Nitrogen, Argon) at low pressure (10-320 mTorr). At such low pressures, and with beam currents of several kiloamperes, beam induced ionization may result in self focusing of an electron beam. Beams propagating under this condition are said to be in the ion focusing regime of propagation. The injected beam has an rms radius of 0.7 cm and a transverse temperature of 35 keV. Beam transport efficiency was measured for He, N2 and Ar. A simple calculation was performed to determine the space charge neutralization fraction as a function of time. Using the results of this calculation, the charge transport efficiency is found and compared with the experimentally measured quantity. Keywords: Electron Beam; Ion Focused Regime.

Book excerpt: 'Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Investigation', was reported in the 'Interim Scientific Report to the AFOSR for the period October 1, 1979 to September 30, 1980' and is herewith included by reference as part of this final report. Progress during the second (final) year of this contract is reported herein. In particular the following topics are discussed: (a) collective ion acceleration experiments using relativistic electron beams and localized ion sources produced by thin films, filaments, puffed gases and vaporization of small diameter wires; and (b) electron beam quality studies experiments in collaboration with Drs. Robert K. Parker and V.L. Granatstein at the Naval Research Laboratory with the objective of obtaining 'cool' beams propagating in vacuum in an axial magnetic field obtaining 'cool' beams propagating in vacuum in an axial magnetic field with minimum energy spread for such applications as the free electron laser.

Book Synopsis On the Propagation of High Intensity, Relativistic Electron Beams by : Thomas G. Roberts
Download or read book On the Propagation of High Intensity, Relativistic Electron Beams written by Thomas G. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense beams of relativistic electrons have been extracted from the electrode space of flash X-ray machines and projected into plasma columns and drift spaces. In the plasma columns the beam pinches itself and propagates to a target at the end of the discharge. The plasma column is produced by a conventional pinch discharge in argon and the magnetic field of the plasma column is sufficient to guide the high energy beam around rather sharp curves with little loss of energy. In addition to the very interesting properties of the beam itself, and its applications in thermonuclear work, the possibility of using these beams for a relatively inexpensive, ion accelerator which may produce intense pulses of heavy ions with energies as high as 10 to the 12th power eV per nucleon has recently stimulated research. It is the purpose of the paper to describe the principal experimental results so far obtained, and to derive an expression for the maximum current which a beam may possess by use of the Bennett theory and the equilibrium current distribution which the beam must assume. It will also be shown that this expression reduces to the Alfven limit in a frame in which the beam's space charge is fully neutralized, and indicates that beams which exceed the Alfven limit may be expected to propagate in the laboratory frame.
