Book excerpt: The hypersonic impulse gun tunnel at the UTIAS was used to experimentally investigate the interaction between an oblique shock wave and boundary layer near convex corners in hypersonic flow. Experiments were conducted in two phases. The first phase involved tunnel test operating conditions that presumably developed turbulent boundary layer on the model surface in Mach 7.2 flow. Schlieren photographs indicated that it was not possible to conclude that the boundary layer developed was, in fact, turbulent. The second phase of the program included preliminary investigation of shock-laminar boundary layer interaction near rounded convex conners. As a first step, experiments were repeated to validate previously documented results achieved at the current facility. Surface static pressure measurements and Schlieren photographs were taken to investigate interaction near a 5 degrees convex corner. Results obtained in this phase supported the repeatable characteristics of the facility.

Book excerpt: Two classes of shock-wave boundary-layer interactions were studied experimentally in a shock tunnel in which a low Reynolds number, turbulent flow at Mach 8 was developed on a cold, flat test surface. The two classes of interactions were: (1) a swept interaction generated by a wedge ('fin') mounted perpendicularly on the flat plate; and (2) a two-dimensional, unseparated interaction induced by a shock impinging near an expansion corner. The swept interaction, with wedge angles of 5-20 degrees, was separated and there was also indication that the strongest interactions prossessed secondary separation zones. The interaction spread out extensively from the inviscid shock location although no indication of quasi-conical symmetry was evident. The surface pressure from the upstream influence to the inviscid shock was relatively low compared to the inviscid downstream value but it rose rapidly past the inviscid shock location. However, the surface pressure did not reach the downstream inviscid value and reasons were proposed for this anomalous behavior compared to strongly separated, supersonic interactions. The second class of interactions involved weak shocks impinging near small expansion corners. As a prelude to studying this interaction, a hypersonic similarity parameter was identified for the pure, expansion corner flow. The expansion corner severely damped out surface pressure fluctuations. When a shock impinged upstream of the corner, no significant changes to the surface pressure were found as compared to the case when the shock impinged on a flat plate. But, when the shock impinged downstream of the corner, a close coupling existed between the two wave systems, unlike the supersonic case. This close coupling modified the upstream influence. Regardless of whether the shock impinged ahead or behind the corner, the downstream region was affected by the close coupling between the shock and the expansion. Not only was the mean pressure distribution modified but the un...

Book excerpt: This edited monograph contains the proceedings of the International Shock Interaction Symposium, which emerged as an heir to both the Mach Reflection and Shock Vortex Interaction Symposia. These scientific biannual meetings provide an ideal platform to expose new developments and discuss recent challenges in the field of shock wave interaction phenomena. The goal of the symposia is to offer a forum for international interaction between young and established scientists in the field of shock and blast wave interaction phenomena. The target audience of this book comprises primarily researchers and experts in the field of shock waves, but the book may also be beneficial for young scientists and graduate students alike.

Book excerpt: This report describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of the properties of attached and separated regions of shock wave-laminar boundary layer interacting in the strong interaction regime. The flow is studied over a flat plate-wedge compression surface in the high Mach number, low Reynolds number regime where the interaction between the viscous and inviscid regions over the basic flat plate is strong and of fundamental importance to the problem. The theoretical analysis treats the development of the viscous layer and its interaction with the external inviscid stream, using an integral representation for the boundary layer equations. A complementary experimental study investigated the flow over a flat plate-wedge compression surface for a range of free-stream Reynolds number and Mach number conditions in the strong interaction regime.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation of hypersonic laminar boundary-layer/shock-wave interactions using the method of MacCormack to solve the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Comparisons of the numerical solutions with experimental data were made to ascertain the validity of the numerical method and to identify regions of anomalous behavior. The algorithm gave good results when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions that caused either small or no separated regions and marginal performance when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions having large regions of separated flow. The extents of the separated regions in interactions having large regions of separated flow were underpredicted when compared with experimental data. The predicted wall heat-transfer rates exhibited the correct qualitative trend but not the experimentally measured quantitative values. Consideration of the effects of needed stabilizing terms as well as grid resolution suggests inadequate mesh spacing in the longitudinal direction as the cause of the aforementioned anomalies. If inadequate mesh spacing (and the corresponding lack of support for every term of the Navier-Stokes equations) is a prime cause of the cited discrepancies between the numerical results and the experimental data, then the needed reduction of several orders of magnitude in delta x, would increase CPU time and core storage requirements to untenable levels.
