Book excerpt: An experimental facility called the 'rotating foil apparatus' was designed and built to study cavitation erosion in an actual but controllable hydrodynamic system. Test results from this apparatus have confirmed the time dependence of cavitation intensity and also indicated the relationship between erosion intensity (I sub e) and cavitation parameter (sigma) for an NACA 16-021 foil section at 181 ft/sec. A family of the I sub e versus sigma curves is sought for several velocities so that the true relation between I sub e and velocity can be established thus providing a clue of the pressure which causes the bubbles to collapse. Additional testing is planned to determine the relationship between Reynold's number (Re) and erosion intensity (I sub e) for several values of cavitation parameter (sigma). The ultimate objective is modeling cavitation erosion. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report seeks to offer a best current assessment of the several elevated temperature properties that commonly form the basis for establishing allowable stresses or design stress intensity values. The results are presented in a form readily usable for that purpose. The data that are evaluated are those that have become available since the publication in 1955 of ASTM Data Series Publication DS 11 (formerly STP No. 180), Elevated Temperature Properties of Carbon Steels, as well as selected data from that earlier publication. The body of the report provides, in text, tables and figures, details concerning the materials, the evaluation procedures that were employed, and the results.

Book excerpt: A rotating foil apparatus was developed and used to study the effect of exposure time, pressure, velocity and size of the foil on intensity of cavitation erosion. Earlier studies with a vibratory apparatus showed that the rate of erosion increases with exposure time, reaches a maximum value and then decreases. These observations are essentially confirmed for the case of erosion on an actual hydrofoil. The maximum rate of erosion is then correlated with the cavitation parameter for two sizes of NACA 16-021 hydrofoil (3 inches and 1 1/2 inches in chord length). The intensity of erosion increases with decreasing cavitation parameter, reaches a peak and then decreases with decreasing cavitation parameter at a given velocity. An approximate analysis was made to explain this result. According to this analysis, the intensity of erosion should vary as the cube of the velocity and should be independent of the size of the foil. However, the experimental results show that the intensity of erosion varies as the sixth power of the velocity and also depends on the size of the foil. An understanding of these two scale effects is essential for a successful model-prototype correlation. (Author).

Book excerpt: In the report, six scaling laws are derived and used to investigate the feasibility of modeling cavitation erosion. The velocity scale and size scale are studied with regard to six nondimensional ratios, namely. the erosion number, the relative nuclei size, the Weber number, the cavitation number, the cavitation inception number and the degree of cavitation. These scaling laws indicate that it is possible to model erosion in the laboratory and to predict the prototype performance. In addition, these scaling laws may be used to explain many currently available experimental observations.
