Book excerpt: This work presents the experimental results of the strength of sands and clay soils in the following conditions: plane shear, triaxial stress state, with passive and active loading. The obtained experimental results are compared with existing theories of strength and the reasons for their non-conformity are identified. Experimental data on the determination of the position of shear surfaces with active and passive resistance of soils is analysed. A new concept of the theory of soil strength is considered, which allows to take into account the fundamental parameters of the strength of soils: the angle of internal friction, specific adhesion, and lateral pressure ratio. Given analytical expressions allow one to determine the stress state at the sites rejected with respect to the main stresses. The definition of the physical essence of the concept of lateral pressure coefficient for soils is given. Also described are the results of experiments to determine the critical load on soil having the shape of a truncated cone, where the angles of deflection of the shear surfaces have been experimentally determined, on the basis of which analytical expressions have been obtained that allow prediction of the critical load. The book provides methods for solving various geotechnical problems using the theory of soil strength proposed by the authors. The book is intended for professionals working in the fields of soil mechanics and geotechnics, as well as for students and academics in engineering, earth and soil sciences and construction.

Book excerpt: These proceedings document the various papers delivered and partially presented at the International Conference “From experimental evidence towards numerical modeling of unsaturated soils,” which was held in Weimar (Germany) during 18-19 September 2003. The conference was organized under the auspices of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and the National German G- technical Society (DGGT). The need to understand the behavior of unsaturated soils is becoming exclusively - sential for the geotechnical engineers and designers. In the last three decades many - searchers have made significant contribution to the understanding of the unsaturated soil mechanics. Nevertheless, application of the subject to variety of new problems still - quires our attention. This International conference is a mere attempt to unite researchers and engineers in geotechnical engineering and to discuss about the problems associated with the unsaturated soils. Doing so the objectives of these lecture notes are as follows: - to promote unsaturated soil mechanics for practical application, - to exchange experiences in experimental unsaturated soil mechanics and numerical modeling, - to discuss application of unsaturated soil mechanics to variety of problems. In other words, we could also name these two volumes as “From theory to daily pr- tice”. I would like to extend my deep sense of appreciation as the editor and the Head of the organizing committee, to many persons who have contributed either directly or indirectly to organize the International conference and to finalize these proceedings.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Geotechnology, grade: 9.36, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, language: English, abstract: Construction of building on clay soil is highly risky due to its poor strength. Clayey soil creates many problems to the Geotechnical Engineers primarily because of repeated change of moisture content. Normally, these soils increase in size and swell when they absorb water and reduce in size and shrink when they become dry. Volume change in soil leads to distortions in the form of settlement due to contraction as a result of dryness or in the form of expansion due to swelling as a result of the absorption of water. There may be the need for soil treatment to improve the engineering properties of such soil. Compacted bentonite is often used as a buffer materials and for radioactive waste disposal system. A good understanding of the hydro-mechanical behavior of clay soil is essential to ensure safe disposal. The present study reports the results on the effects of temperature on swelling pressure and compressibility characteristics of soil. In this study, two different type of soils were used. One of them was a bentonite (liquid limit = 139%) procured from Bikaner, Rajasthan another one was Rourkela local soil (liquid limit = 35%). A new oedometer was designed and developed in-house to carry out consolidation and swelling pressure tests at a higher temperature. Swelling pressures tests on compacted bentonite specimens of targeted dry density of 1.6 Mg/m3 were conducted under constant volume condition for the temperature range between 25 to 90 0C. Compressibility tests at various temperatures for both soils were conducted using distilled water as the saturating fluid. It observed that high temperature caused an increase in swelling pressure and compressibility index of bentonite soil. There is no effect of temperature on compressibility index of Rourkela local soil.

Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book excerpt: The total amount of settlement that a structure founded on a clay soil undergoes comprises of immediate (or elastic) and consolidation settlements. In the case of clay soils, amount of consolidation settlement (Sc) is more than that of immediate or elastic settlement (Se). Hence, it is important to correctly estimate the amount of consolidation settlement (Sc). The parameters that influence consolidation settlement of a field soil are initial degree of saturation (S%), void ratio (e) of soil prior to excavation, the amount of overburden pressure removed during trench making ( o), or in other words, the amount of rebound caused in the soil giving rise to final void ratio just before construction and the intensity of loading or the applied pressure ( ). This book presents an experimental study on the effect of above parameters on compressibility characteristics of a clay soil. The different steps undertaken in the field for footing construction are simulated in the laboratory and compressibility studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static and dynamic one-dimensional compression tests were performed on each of ten 5-inch undisturbed shelby tube soil samples taken from the site of Operation Snowball at the Suffield Experimental Station. The maximum stresses attained were generally in the 390 to 1,300 psi range. The results of the tests are presented in the form of plots of axial stress versus axial strain, constrained modulus versus axial stress, and radial stress versus axial stress. The dynamic modulus observed for the upper 13 feet of the soil profile has a minimum value of approximately 3,000 psi, and is approximately twice the static value. Between the depths of 13 feet and 23 feet, moduli values ranging from 18,000 to 24,000 psi are applicable at the 100 psi stress level. Below a depth of 23 feet, the estimated water level, the constrained modulus is considered equal to that of water--300,000 psi. An airblast-induced ground motion prediction was made for a range of 250 feet from a 500-ton TNT explosion. A peak transient surface displacement of 4.6 inches was computed for a time of 39 milliseconds after arrival of the shock front at the ground surface. Because of differences between the laboratory and field loading histories, and the strain rate sensitivity of the soil, the computed displacement is probably from 50 to 100 percent of the actual displacement.
