Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation studied the propagation of high intensity sound waves through an air-filled porous material. The material is assumed to be rigid, incompressible, and homogeneous; and (2) adequately described by two properties: resistivity r and porosity Omega. The resistivity was measured as a function of velocity for static flows and found to follow the empirical relation r=r sub 1 + r sub 2 u(sgn(u). This relation is assumed to apply for acoustic signals as well. Ordinary hydrodynamic nonlinearity (which leads to shock formation) is neglected. The resulting wave equation is still nonlinear, however, because of the u sgn(u) term in the resistivity. The equation is solved in the frequency domain as an infinite set of coupled inhomogeneous Helmhholtz equations, one for each harmonic. An approximate first integral formulation of these equations gives relations for progressive waves. The source wave considered is a slightly distorted intense tone, that is, a finite- amplitude fundamental accompanied by weak higher harmonics. An approximate but analytical solution leads to predictions of excess attenuation, saturation, and phase speed reduction for the fundamental component. A more general numerical solution is used to calculate the propagation curves for the higher harmonics. The u sgn(u) nonlinearity produces a cubic distortion pattern; when the input signal is a pure tone, only odd harmonic distortion products are generated. Quantitative experiments were performed on batted Kevlar 29 having porosities in the range Omega = 0.94 to 0.98. An ad hoc model is presented to illustrate the gross nonlinear effects on absorption. Keywords: Nonlinear, Lined ducts; Reflection.

Book excerpt: During the period 1 November 1970 to 31 October 1975 basic research in nonlinear acoustics was carried out. The research, which was both theoretical and experimental, may be separated into three major areas. In one area N waves from electric sparks were used to study propagation, focusing, and diffraction of high intensity transient waves. Research was conducted on periodic finite-amplitude waves in a second area. In particular the author studied propagation in tubes, horns, and open media; propagation in inhomogeneous media; acoustic saturation; directional characteristics of beams; and suppression of sound by sound. Finally research was done on the propagation of finite-amplitude noise, both in tubes and in open media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Foundations of Technical Acoustics discusses theoretical foundations of acoustical engineering. It is not so much a technical compendium as a systematic statement of physical laws so conceived that technologists might find in it all the information they need to become acquainted with the physical meaning and mathematical expression of phenomena they encounter in their work. To facilitate the acquirement of notions, which lie beyond a layman's grasp, the plan of narration adopted consists in beginning with the simplest idealized cases and then gradually moving on to the truest possible picture of real phenomena. Thus, the first part of the book, dealing with the acoustic field, begins with lossless fluid media, and passes then through perfectly elastic solid media to the real ones, showing losses and relaxations. In the second part, discussing the acoustical systems, the reader is led up from the simplest vibrating system with one degree of freedom to inhomogeneous spatial systems. Classical problems of theoretical acoustics are linked to the questions which appeared still to be the subjects of research. A special chapter has been written to deal with nonlinear acoustics, in consideration of continually growing applications of the acoustic fields of high intensity.
