Book excerpt: The principal objective of the proposed research is the experimental study and elucidation of the role that long-ranged disorder plays in the light-induced metastable conductance changes in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The development of sources of low-cost renewable electrical energy is a high national priority. A consensus has developed that a-Si:H is the material of choice for large-area photovoltaic devices. However, the efficiency of a-Si:H-based solar cells decreases by nearly a factor of two following extended illumination, owing to the creation of light-induced defects resulting from the recombination of photo-excited charge carriers. If this light-induced defect formation could be reduced or eliminated, the practical conversion-efficiency of a-Si:H-based solar cells would effectively double, yielding cost per kilowatt-hour values comparable to that of conventional fossil fuel generation of electricity. Recent experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that associated with light-induced dangling-bond creation, there are alterations in the medium- and long-ranged disorder in the a-Si:H films. A determination of whether or not the long-ranged disorder is affected in the Staebler-Wronski effect is important, for if so, then even when local defect generation is prevented, there could still remain metastable conductance changes that would affect photovoltaic device performance. Alternatively, if experimental studies clearly rule out light-induced changes in the long-ranged order in the a-Si:H film, then entire classes of models for the Staebler-Wronski effect can be eliminated from consideration. The results from this project indicate that the metastable conductance changes associated with the Staebler-Wronski effect can be understood solely in terms of models that involve only local changes in bonding coordination. Attempts to understand or control this phenomenon by altering the long-ranged disorder will not be fruitful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have great pleasure in presenting the Proceedings of the 10th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference held in Lisbon from 8 to 12 April 1991. These Proceedings contain all the scientific papers delivered at the Conference. The following is a short summary of the Conference activities. The Conference was opened by the Minister of Industry and Energy of Portugal, Eng. Luis Mira do Amaral. At the opening ceremony the Becquerel Prize, created by the Commission of the European Communities, was awarded to Professor Werner Bloss of the University of Stuttgart, and presented by Professor Philippe Bourdeau, Director at the Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development. The Becquerellecture delivered by Professor Bloss constituted the scientific opening to the conference. About 760 delegates from 53 countries presented around 350 contributions, 50 of them as plenary lectures; the contributions were selected among the many papers submitted, this time more strictly than ever before. Also a selected group of scientists were invited to deliver 15 review lectures, to provide an adequate context to the contributions to the Conference. A Symposium on Photovoltaics in Developing Countries, which was very well attended, took place as a parallel event. The Symposium provided an opportunity to hear not only experts of the industrialized countries, but also speakers from the countries where photovoltaics provides services of paramount value.

Final Subcontract Report, April 1, 1988--March 31, 1991 written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work performed for this contract continued investigations of the origins of metastable effectS in a-Si:H through three kinds of studies: (1) the effect of carbon impurities in a-Si:H samples at low concentrations using drive-level capacitance profiling measurements on samples whose carbon content was intentionally modulated spatially during growth, (2) the characterization of metastable states in n-type doped a Si:H samples caused by quench cooling and by light-soaking with partial annealing, and (3) the use of depletion-width-modulated ESR spectroscopy together with junction capacitance spectroscopy to investigate deep defect states for various metastable states of a 10- and an 80-Vppm PH3-doped a-Si:H sample.
