Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-output diesel engine heat transfer was investigated using a single-cylinder research engine. Engine operating conditions near 30 bar IMEPg and 250 bar in-cylinder pressure were tested. This study had three primary goals. The first was to compare local piston heat transfer, based on fast-response piston surface temperature data, to global engine heat transfer based on thermodynamic data. A wireless telemetry system was used to acquire fast-response piston surface temperature data, from which heat flux was calculated. The local measurements were then spatially averaged to find total heat transfer, which agreed relatively well with the global measurements. In the second part of this research, thermal barrier coatings of various thickness and surface roughness were applied to the piston crown. Three coated pistons were tested. Coatings with higher roughness did not show any statistically significant improvement to engine performance when compared to the metal baseline piston, and produced higher filter smoke numbers. The lower roughness coated piston showed an increase of gross indicated thermal efficiency of up to 3.5 % (relative) compared to the metal baseline piston for some operating conditions. The increase in efficiency was found to correlate with additional late-cycle apparent heat release rate and a reduction in in-cylinder heat transfer. In the third part of this research, a new instantaneous spatially averaged heat transfer correlation was developed using the local heat flux data. Previous correlations are based on the correlation of Nusselt and Reynolds numbers. The new correlation included an additional term, dimensionless chemical energy release rate. The new term was derived from dimensional analysis, which should enable similitude for diesel engines. A new interpretation of the characteristic velocity, as found in the Reynolds number, was developed and included the integrated fuel mass injection rate. The existing and new correlations were calibrated to the experimental data by minimizing the least squares error. On average, the new formulation was found to match the experimental data better than the existing models.

This book was released on 2002-01-11 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes versions of papers selected from those presented at the THIESEL 2000 Conference on Thermofluidynamic Processes in Diesel Engines, held at the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, during the period of September th th 13 to 15 , 2000. The papers are grouped into seven thematic areas: State of the Art and Prospective, Fuels for Diesel Engines, Injection System and Spray Formation, Combustion and Pollutant Formation, Modelling, Experimental Techniques, and Air Management. These areas cover most of the technologies and research strategies that may allow Light Duty and Heavy Duty Diesel engines to comply with current and forthcoming emission standards, while maintaining or improving fuel consumption. The main objectives of the conference were to bring together ideas and experience from Industry and Universities to facilitate interchange of information and to promote discussion of future research and development needs. The technical papers emphasised the use diagnostic and simulation techniques and their relationship to engineering practice and the advancement of the Diesel engine. We hope that this approach, which proved to be successful at the Conference, is reflected in this volume. We thank all those who contributed to the success of the Conference, and particularly the members of the Advisory Committee who assessed abstracts and chaired many of the technical sessions. Weare also grateful to participants who presented their work or contributed to the many discussions. Finally, the Conference benefitted from financial support from the organisations listed below and we are glad to have this opportunity to record our gratitude.
Book Synopsis Combustion in Piston Engines by : A. K. Oppenheim
Download or read book Combustion in Piston Engines written by A. K. Oppenheim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion in Piston Engines presents the technique of pressure diagnostics to measure the fuel consumption in an engine cylinder and to monitor the operation of micro-electronic systems for its control. It provides a recipe for bridging the gap between the hydrocarbon-fed combustion technology of automotive powerplants of today and electro-magnetic technologies of the future. The author proposes and introduces a model for the design of a MECC (micro-electronically controlled combustion) systems to modulate combustion in engine cylinders. This system yields significant reduction in the formation of pollutants and the consumption of fuel, so that, eventually, emissions using any clean hydrocarbon fuel will be acceptable and gas mileage could be doubled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in microfabrication technologies have enabled the development of entirely new classes of small-scale devices with applications in fields ranging from biomedicine, to wireless communication and computing, to reconnaissance, and to augmentation of human function. In many cases, however, what these devices can actually accomplish is limited by the low energy density of their energy storage and conversion systems. This breakthrough book brings together in one place the information necessary to develop the high energy density combustion-based power sources that will enable many of these devices to realize their full potential. Engineers and scientists working in energy-related fields will find: • An overview of the fundamental physics and phenomena of microscale combustion; • Presentations of the latest modeling and simulation techniques for gasphase and catalytic micro-reactors; • The latest results from experiments in small-scale liquid film, microtube, and porous combustors, micro-thrusters, and micro heat engines; • An assessment of the additional research necessary to develop compact and high energy density energy conversion systems that are truly practical.

Download or read book Internal Combustion Engines written by Giancarlo Ferrari and published by Società Editrice Esculapio. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal combustion engines are among the most fascinating and ingenious machines which, with their invention and continuous development, have positively influenced the industrial and social history during the last century, especially by virtue of the role played as propulsion technology par excellence used in on-road private and commercial transportation. Nowadays, the growing attention towards the de-carbonization opens up new scenarios, but IC engines will continue to have a primary role in multiple sectors: automotive, marine, offroad machinery, mining, oil & gas and rail, power generation, possibly with an increasing use of non-fossil fuels. The book is organized in monothematic chapters, starting with a presentation of the general and functional characteristics of IC engines, and then dwelling on the details of the fluid exchange processes and the definition of the layout of intake and exhaust systems, obviously including the supercharging mechanisms, and continue with the description of the injection and combustion processes, to conclude with the explanation of the formation, control and reduction of pollutant emissions and radiated noise.
