Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Exercises and Problems in Elementary Chemistry: Together With Various Chemical Tables and Tables for the Conversion of Common Weights and Measures Into Those of the Metric System; For the Use of Beginners The following pages were compiled expressly for the use of my own classes, and without any view to general publication. The Principals of two of our neighboring Colleges, however, on being made acquainted with the proposed plan of instruction, desiring copies for the use of their pupils, I have had an additional number printed for them; and, if the method should commend itself to teachers in other institutions, the edition could be extended to meet their wishes. The work is a mere compilation from text-books recently published in England, by some of the most eminent and successful teachers of Elementary Chemistry in the Colleges and Universities of that country. None of the works from which the materials were extracted have, as yet, been republished in this country. They are Prof. Frankland's "Lecture Notes for Students," Prof. Galloway's "First Step in Chemistry," and "Second Step in Chemistry," Prof. Williamson's "Chemistry for Students," Prof. Roscoe's" Lessons in Elementary Chemistry," Prof. Wilson's "Inorganic Chemistry," and Prof. Hofmann's "Introduction to Modern Chemistry." Most of the Problems have been extracted from Prof. Galloway's "First Step," and if that work could have been obtained for the use of my classes, there would have been less necessity for this compilation; but repeated efforts to obtain copies, made during the last year and a half, only resulted in the information that it was "out of print." The experience of many years, as a teacher of Chemistry, has convinced me that, even in our best Colleges, with all the aids of apparatus, and in the hands of thoroughly qualified teachers and manipulators, a large majority of pupils fail to gain such a knowledge of the principles of the science, as ought to repay them for the time faithfully spent in the attempt. This failure is due, I think, not so much to want of qualification in the teacher, or of industry in the student, as to the generally defective plan of teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Science: An Elementary Course of Physics and Chemistry Many of the experiments follow the course of instruction in elementary science contained in the physics and chemistry syllabus prepared by a Committee of the Incorporated Association of Head Masters. The results are indicated in each case, hence the experiments may be regarded in a way as solved examples of the general laws and phenomena Of physical science, but the examples can only be properly understood by actually following the various stages which lead to their solution. In a few sec tions of the book it has been necessary to illustrate by numerical examples the principles involved and to exercise the studentin solving simple problems of this kind numerous questions have been added to the chapters. For a large number of these, and more especially for those appended to Chapters III - VII, we are indebted to Mr. Walter J. Wood, who has collected many from actual examination papers, and has supplied the answers. Throughout the preparation of the following pages we have found the assistance and advice Of Professor R. A. Gregory invaluable. Teachers who know Professor Gregory's Exercise Book of Elementary Practical Physics will recognise in the earlier chapters of the present volume several experiments described in that book. The Opportunity of expressing thanks for permission to introduce these is gladly taken; and we also desire to express our Obligations to the Publishers for permitting free use of suitable illustrations from several of their elementary books in the various branches of science with which this volume is concerned. Book excerpt: For students, DIY hobbyists, and science buffs, who can no longer get real chemistry sets, this one-of-a-kind guide explains how to set up and use a home chemistry lab, with step-by-step instructions for conducting experiments in basic chemistry -- not just to make pretty colors and stinky smells, but to learn how to do real lab work: Purify alcohol by distillation Produce hydrogen and oxygen gas by electrolysis Smelt metallic copper from copper ore you make yourself Analyze the makeup of seawater, bone, and other common substances Synthesize oil of wintergreen from aspirin and rayon fiber from paper Perform forensics tests for fingerprints, blood, drugs, and poisons and much more From the 1930s through the 1970s, chemistry sets were among the most popular Christmas gifts, selling in the millions. But two decades ago, real chemistry sets began to disappear as manufacturers and retailers became concerned about liability. ,em>The Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments steps up to the plate with lessons on how to equip your home chemistry lab, master laboratory skills, and work safely in your lab. The bulk of this book consists of 17 hands-on chapters that include multiple laboratory sessions on the following topics: Separating Mixtures Solubility and Solutions Colligative Properties of Solutions Introduction to Chemical Reactions & Stoichiometry Reduction-Oxidation (Redox) Reactions Acid-Base Chemistry Chemical Kinetics Chemical Equilibrium and Le Chatelier's Principle Gas Chemistry Thermochemistry and Calorimetry Electrochemistry Photochemistry Colloids and Suspensions Qualitative Analysis Quantitative Analysis Synthesis of Useful Compounds Forensic Chemistry With plenty of full-color illustrations and photos, Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments offers introductory level sessions suitable for a middle school or first-year high school chemistry laboratory course, and more advanced sessions suitable for students who intend to take the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry exam. A student who completes all of the laboratories in this book will have done the equivalent of two full years of high school chemistry lab work or a first-year college general chemistry laboratory course. This hands-on introduction to real chemistry -- using real equipment, real chemicals, and real quantitative experiments -- is ideal for the many thousands of young people and adults who want to experience the magic of chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry, Vol. 2: Experimental Work In the preparation of the Laboratory Manual I have tried to make the directions as complete and clear as possible. Wherever there is any danger in carrying out an experiment, the necessary precautions are explicitly stated, even at the cost of some repetition. Most of the experiments - but not all of them - are intended for individual laboratory work. This is a matter which will vary with the equipment of the school and the size of the classes. The following is a list of the numbers of the experiments which I have found to be better fitted for lecture-table or laboratory demonstrations than for individual work, but it is merely the result of my own experience, and is not intended to have any prescriptive implication: Numbers 7, 9, 10, 27, 31, 40, 49a, 60, 61, 60, 128, 129, 133. The questions placed after each chapter are based partly on the laboratory exercise and partly on the corresponding chapter of Part I. The student should not fall into the error of supposing that his own experimental work supplies all the necessary data for answering them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Chemistry: For Junior Students We believe that he is right in the plan he has adopted, and that instruction of this nature would greatly facilitate the acquisition of clear and distinct ideas of the leading facts and laws of Chemistry.' (cfiemz'cal News, vol. Xxix. Page This work is divided into four parts, each one being, as far as -practicable, complete in itself. Part I. Is introductory, and deals with first principles, and with the chemistry of the typical elements, hydro gen and oxygen, and their compounds; Part II., with the rest of the non-metals Part III., with the metals; and Part IV., with organic chemistry. The experiments described are, whenever possible, those easily performed; in some cases, however, methods are necessarily detailed which the student may not have either the skill or the means to carry out, but he should endeavour to see these operations carefully conducted. It is assumed throughout that the reader can obtain some practical instruction in glass working and the construction of apparatus.
