This book was released on 1962 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted to determine the fallout-radiation protection afforded by a residence representative of a type of construction much in favor in the Southwest: a single-story stucco and frame house with a heavy shake roof and no basement. This study was one of many such studies sponsored by Civil Effects Test Operations, Division of Biology and Medicine, U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, for the purpose of evaluating the protection presently afforded by ordinary homes and structures against the dangers of fallout radiation. The protection afforded by the home was determined by simulating a fallout-radiation field above and immediately surrounding the house and measuring the radiation level within. The radiation field was simulated by pumping a sealed Co(60) source through a long length of tubing evenly distributed over the test area. Highly sensitive dose-integrating ionization chambers were used to measure the radiation level inside the structure. The test was performed rapidly, easily, and safely. Valid statistical data were obtained even though the radiation level was of such low magnitude that it was unnecessary to evacuate any of the neighboring homes. The protection factors within the house (ratio of exposure dose rate in the open field to exposure dose rate in the structure) ranged from 2.8 to 4.4, depending on the location. The results compare favorably with those found in previous exercises under similar conditions.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is a discussion of the technical assumptions underlying the methods currently recommended by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) for calculating protection afforded by structures against fallout radiation. It discusses methods for calculating the contributions from radioactive sources on the roof and on the ground surrounding a simple one-storied building. It shows in detail how each technical chart in the OCD Professional Manual is derived from basic data on radiation penetration developed by Dr. L. V. Spencer.Charts from the Professional Manual and relevant curves from Spencer's work are included.(Author).

Download or read book Curves of Input Impedance Change Due to Ground for Dipole Antennas written by Lewis E. Vogler and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphs of the change in input impedance of electrically short dipole antennas in the presence of an isotropic and homogeneous ground are presented, considering four types of antennas: horizontal and vertical, electric and magnetic dipoles.Curves of the change in both the input resistance and reactance are shown for a wide range of values of the frequency, antenna height above the ground, and electromagnetic ground constants.(Author).

Chock-full of practical instructions and preventative measures, Nuclear War Survival Skills is based on years of meticulous scientific research conducted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Featuring a new introduction by ex-Navy SEAL Don Mann, this book also includes: instructions for six different fallout shelters, myths and facts about the dangers of nuclear weapons, tips for maintaining an adequate food and water supply, a foreword by “the father of the hydrogen bomb,” physicist Dr. Edward Teller, and an “About the Author” note by Eugene P. Wigner, physicist and Nobel Laureate. Written at a time when global tensions were at their peak, Nuclear War Survival Skills remains relevant in the dangerous age in which we now live.
