Book excerpt: A singular perturbation solution to the blunt-body stagnation-region flow of an inviscid, radiating gas has been obtained by means of the PoincaĆ-Lighthill-Kuo, or perturbation-of-coordinates, method. A number of results for a gray gas have been presented in order to provide some physical insight into the effects of various parameters on the shock-layer enthalpy profiles and the radiant heat-transfer rates. A nongray absorption-coefficient model was developed which includes, in an approximate way, the important vacuum-ultraviolet contributions of bound-free and line transitions. This model was used to obtain solutions pertinent to the case of reentry into the earth's atmosphere. While the results are restricted to small values of the radiation cooling parameter, which characterizes the relative importance of radiation and convection as energy-transport mechanisms, they cover broad ranges of vehicle velocity, altitude, and nose radius, which are of practical interest. The characteristic enthalpy variation of the model absorption coefficient was found to be nearly independent of altitude and nose radius for fixed vehicle velocity except for velocities lower than 10.67 km/sec. Thus it was possible to correlate certain quantities by plotting these quantities as functions of the nondimensional adiabatic radiant heat-transfer rate for various altitudes and nose radii at fixed vehicle velocity. Among the quantities correlated was the cooling factor (the ratio of the stagnation-point radiant heat-transfer rate to the adiabatic radiant heat-transfer rate). The cooling-factor correlation is particularly useful because it eliminates the need to perform nonadiabatic calculations whenever radiant heat-transfer rates are desired. Also correlated was the factor by which the convective heat-transfer rate is reduced because of radiation losses in the shock layer. Finally, upper-bound estimates were made of the effects of absorption of precursor radiation by the free-stream air on the radiant and convective heat-transfer rates.

Book excerpt: Experimental convective heat transfer distributions on a hemisphere-cylinder configuration were obtained using slug calorimeters and Gardon gages. Wind tunnel tests were conducted at a nominal Mach number of 10 over a free-stream Reynolds number range from 310,000 to 1,040,000 based on the model diameter (5.80 inches). The data were compared with theoretical heat transfer values and data obtained with thin-skin calorimetric wind tunnel models. The slug calorimeter data were highly time dependent due to conduction heat losses; consequently, the data did not compare favorably with theoretical predictions. Gardon gage indicated heat transfer was in very good agreement with both theoretical values and data from other sources. (Author).
Book Synopsis Heat Transfer Analysis Without and with Forward Facing Spike Attached to a Blunt Body at High Speed Flow by : Rakhab Chandra Mehta
Download or read book Heat Transfer Analysis Without and with Forward Facing Spike Attached to a Blunt Body at High Speed Flow written by Rakhab Chandra Mehta and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present chapter deals with heat transfer analysis around unspiked and spiked bodies at high speeds. A spike attached to a blunt-nosed body drastically alters its flowfield and influences the aerodynamic heating in a high speed flow. The effect of spike length, shape and spike-nose configuration is numerically studied at zero angle of incidence. The numerical analysis describes overall flowfield features over without and with forward facing spike attached to a blunt body at high speed flow. The shock stand-off distance, sonic line, stagnation point velocity gradient and stagnation point heat flux are analyzed and compared with different aerodisk configurations. It is found that the hemispherical aerodisk experiences high wall heat flux as compared to the flat-faced aerodisk. Numerical and experimental studies reveal that the wall heat flux levels are decreased in the presence of the spikes and aerospike as compared to without attached spiked to the blunt-nose basic configuration.

Download or read book Interaction of Heated Filaments with a Blunt Body in Supersonic Flow written by Kellie Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two computational studies are performed to examine the influence of energy deposition on a blunt body in supersonic flow. The first objective is to determine the effect of increasing filament diameter on the efficiency and effectiveness of drag reduction to a blunt body. The second objective is to evaluate the influence of the energy filaments on the heat transfer to the blunt body. The energy deposition is modeled as a low density, high temperature filament that is injected in the freestream and interacts with the blunt body. A code is written to solve the compressible Navier Stokes equations to evaluate these effects.

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Blunt Base Heat Transfer in an Axisymmetric Turbulent Supersonic Separated Flow written by L. S. Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heat transfer from a blunt base immersed in an axisymmetric turbulent supersonic separated flow was experimentally measured. The investigation was conducted at a Mach number and Reynolds number per foot of 3.88 and 16,700,000, respectively. Experimental heat transfer data, determined by a transient heat transfer technique, were obtained for both heated and cooled base conditions. A series of three models were used, permitting the measurement of an average value of base heat transfer, as well as the angular and radial variations. The experimental data obtained in the investigation were compared with published experimental data and with recently published correlating parameters for both base heating and base cooling. (Author).
Book Synopsis The Effect of Edge Bluntness of a Flat Plate on Heat Transfer in a Supersonic Flow by : L. V. Kozlov
Download or read book The Effect of Edge Bluntness of a Flat Plate on Heat Transfer in a Supersonic Flow written by L. V. Kozlov and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of edge bluntness of a flat plate on heat transfer is experimentally investigated in the region where anisotropic conditions do not exist on the limit of the boundary layer. The experiments were carried out by means of a wind tunnel having a 110 x 110 mm test section with nozzle velocities in the Mach range from 2 to 4 M. Heat transfer was evaluated on a flat plate with cylindrical bluntness in a range of a given relative bluntness. The dependence of the nondimensional heat-transfer coefficient on the Reynolds number is illustrated in a graph. The data obtained with a blunt-edged flat plate are compared with those obtained on a sharp-edged flat plate. The distribution of local heat fluxes on both plates is presented in graphical form and shows that at given large ratios the local value of the heat flux on a blunt-edged plate is always smaller than on a sharp-edged plate, but in a given vicinity the boundary layer builds up faster. An analysis of the results shows that the effect of bluntness increases with the Mach number. (Author).
