Book excerpt: An experimental and numerical investigation has been conducted on flow through two square ducts with a 2:1 hydraulic diameter ratio joined at a right angle. Measurements of the velocity field were acquired using a laser Doppler velocimeter at various planar locations throughout the ducts at a nominal Reynolds number of 68,000. Pressure drop measurements were taken for 3 Reynolds numbers between 46,000 and 93,000. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses were performed using STAR-CD to determine how well the experimental data could be predicted using the k-[var-epsilon], k-[var-epsilon] RNG, k-[var-epsilon]Chen, k-[var-epsilon] quadratic, k-[omega], and Spalart-Allmaras models. The results show that there are distinct differences in the CDF results. The standard k-[var-epsilon] model overpredicted the loss coefficient by 4% and underpredicted the exit swirl magnitude by 43%. The best predictor of the swirl decay was found to be the k-[omega] model, which adequately followed the data throughout the entire geometry and underpredicted the exit swirl by 16%. The best overall model was found to be Spalart-Allmaras, which overpredicted the loss coefficient by 2% and underpredicted the exit swirl magnitude by 40%.

Book excerpt: The present contribution describes the methodology and results of an experimental/numerical research program progressing at the von Karman Institute about the investigation of flow and heat transfer in a square section stationary duct equipped with high blockage ribs on one face. This geometry is representative of a high pressure turbine blade cooling channel. The purpose is to highlight the interaction and the synergy between experimental and simulation approaches. The paper shows how the experimental results lead to a conceptual model of the behavior and the topology of this flow. A numerical prediction of the flow over a single rib, obtained from a Large-Eddy Simulation, is able to validate this model, to provide additional information eventually not accessible by the experiments and to put in evidence the underlying structures driving the process. Simulations of a multi-rib domain put in evidence the possible existence of flow structures longer than one rib-pitch length and suggest possible avenues of futures experimental/numerical campaigns to gain a full understanding of this class of flows.

Book excerpt: The research in this British dissertation was motivated by the desire to provide a comprehensive set of convective heat transfer data against which flow simulation schemes could be tested. Turbulent convecting three-dimensional flow of fluids in curved passages is frequently encountered in thermofluids equipment and systems. Although such flow situations have been too complex to adequately simulate computationally in the past, recent developments have provided physical models coupled with numerical techniques which can be applied to provide such simulations. Nevertheless, it has not been established to what extent such simulations provide accurate predictions and a sufficiently detailed data base does not exist to allow a searching evaluation of computer predictions. It is the conclusion of this collaborative study that significant inadequacies remain in the turbulence and wall models with respect to their ability to predict fully-three dimensional curved turbulent flow. Predictions for the Nusselt number distribution are in rather better agreement with the experimental data than are the hydrodynamic and temperature field predictions.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive reference for engineers and researchers, Gas Turbine Heat Transfer and Cooling Technology, Second Edition has been completely revised and updated to reflect advances in the field made during the past ten years. The second edition retains the format that made the first edition so popular and adds new information mainly based on selected published papers in the open literature. See What’s New in the Second Edition: State-of-the-art cooling technologies such as advanced turbine blade film cooling and internal cooling Modern experimental methods for gas turbine heat transfer and cooling research Advanced computational models for gas turbine heat transfer and cooling performance predictions Suggestions for future research in this critical technology The book discusses the need for turbine cooling, gas turbine heat-transfer problems, and cooling methodology and covers turbine rotor and stator heat-transfer issues, including endwall and blade tip regions under engine conditions, as well as under simulated engine conditions. It then examines turbine rotor and stator blade film cooling and discusses the unsteady high free-stream turbulence effect on simulated cascade airfoils. From here, the book explores impingement cooling, rib-turbulent cooling, pin-fin cooling, and compound and new cooling techniques. It also highlights the effect of rotation on rotor coolant passage heat transfer. Coverage of experimental methods includes heat-transfer and mass-transfer techniques, liquid crystal thermography, optical techniques, as well as flow and thermal measurement techniques. The book concludes with discussions of governing equations and turbulence models and their applications for predicting turbine blade heat transfer and film cooling, and turbine blade internal cooling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small-scale, instrumented research aircraft was flown to investigate the flight characteristics of inflatable wings. Ground tests measured the static structural characteristics of the wing at different inflation pressures, and these results compared favorably with analytical predictions. A research-quality instrumentation system was assembled, largely from commercial off-the-shelf components, and installed in the aircraft. Initial flight operations were conducted with a conventional rigid wing having the same dimensions as the inflatable wing. Subsequent flights were conducted with the inflatable wing. Research maneuvers were executed to identify the trim, aerodynamic performance, and longitudinal stability and control characteristics of the vehicle in its different wing configurations. For the angle-of-attack range spanned in this flight program.
