The Congress was organized by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics; members of the IUTAM Congress Committee and Bureau are listed under Congress Organization. The members of the Stanford Organizing Committee, which was responsible for the detailed organization of the Congress, are also given, as are the names of the sponsors and the industrial and educational organizations that contributed so generously to the financial support of the meeting. Those attending the Congress came from 32 countries and totaled 1337 persons, plus wives and children. A list of the registered participants is included in the volume. The technical sessions of the Congress comprised four General Lectures and 281 contributed papers, the latter being presented in groups of five simultaneous sessions. The final choice of the contributed papers was made on the basis of abstracts by an International Papers Commit tee of IUTAM consülting of G. K. BATCHELOR, E. BECKER, N. J. HOFF, and W. T. KOlTER.

Book excerpt: Experimental Mechanics presents the proceedings of the First International Congress on Experimental Mechanics, held at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City, on November 1–3, 1961. This book presents the application of the methods of experimental mechanics to technical problems. Organized into 21 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the experimental techniques developed for different basic and applied research on strength of materials, performance of hydraulic machinery, and accuracy of mechanisms and machine tools. This text then surveys the developments in the field of mechanical measurements, including rubber gage, bolt gage, digital strain indicators, and waterproofed strain gage. Other chapters consider the experimental study of the transient response of a rocket sled with a vertically malaligned center of gravity. The final chapter deals with the conditions of collapse of stiffened cylindrical shells beyond the proportional limit of the material. Experimental stress analysts will find this book useful.

Book excerpt: The 2010 Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference is the seventh in the series on Advances in Experimental Mechanics, and the fifth time that the papers have been presented as a volume in the Applied Mechanics and Materials series. Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). The 61 papers making up this volume reflect strikingly the diverse nature of experimental mechanics. The fourteen sessions address various disciplines: e.g. aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering and state-of-the-art technologies such as biomechanics, novel sensors, and composite and cellular materials. The papers were contributed by workers in both academia and industry; with half of the contributions coming from outside of the UK: thus reflecting the international flavour of this event. This volume will be essential reading for all of those interested in the subject.
